took up the halfpenny off the flag察and walked away quite sober´like by

the shock。 Now察though as easy a man察you would think察as any in the

wide world察 there was no such thing as making him unsay one of these

sort of vows察 which he had learned to reverence when young察 as I well

remember teaching him to toss up for bog´berries on my knee。 VOWS。

It has been maliciously and unjustly hinted that the lower classes of the

people of Ireland pay but little regard to oaths察yet it is certain that some

oaths or vows have great power over their minds。 Sometimes they swear

                                                 55

they will be revenged on some of their neighbours察this is an oath that they

are never known to break。 But察what is infinitely more extraordinary and

unaccountable察 they sometimes make and keep a vow against whisky察

these vows are usually limited to a short time。 A woman who has a

drunken husband is most fortunate if she can prevail upon him to go to the

priest察and make a vow against whisky for a year察or a month察or a week察

or a day。А So I saw the affair was as good as settled between him and

Miss Isabella察and I had no more to say but to wish her joy察which I did the

week afterwards察upon her return from Scotland with my poor master。

My new lady was young察as might be supposed of a lady that had been

carried off by her own consent to Scotland察but I could only see her at first

through her veil察 which察 from bashfulness or fashion察 she kept over her

face。

'And am I to walk through all this crowd of people察my dearest love'

said she to Sir Condy察meaning us servants and tenants察who had gathered

at the back gate。 'My dear' said Sir Condy察'there's nothing for it but to

walk察or to let me carry you as far as the house察for you see the back road

is too narrow for a carriage察and the great piers have tumbled down across

the front approach察so there's no driving the right way察 by reason of the

ruins。'

'Plato察thou reasonest well' said she察or words to that effect察which I

could noways understand察 and again察 when her foot stumbled against a

broken bit of a car´wheel察 she cried out察 'Angels and ministers of grace

defend us' Well察thought I察to be sure察if she's no Jewish察like the last察

she is a mad woman for certain察which is as bad此 it would have been as

well for my poor master to have taken up with poor Judy察who is in her

right mind anyhow。

She was dressed like a mad woman察moreover察more than like any one

I ever saw afore or since察and I could not take my eyes off her察but still

followed behind her察 and her feathers on the top of her hat were broke

going in at the low back door and she pulled out her little bottle out of her

pocket to smell when she found herself in the kitchen察 and said察 'I shall

faint with the heat of this odious察odious place。'

'My dear察it's only three steps across the kitchen察and there's a fine air

                                                56

if your veil was up' said Sir Condy察and with that threw back her veil察so

that I had then a full sight of her face。 She had not at all the colour of one

going to faint察but a fine complexion of her own察as I then took it to be察

though her maid told me after it was all put on察but even察complexion and

all taken in察she was no way察in point of good looks察to compare to poor

Judy察 and withal she had a quality toss with her察 but maybe it was my

over´partiality to Judy察into whose place I may say she stepped察that made

me notice all this。

To do her justice察however察she was察when we came to know her better察

very liberal in her housekeepingnothing at all of the skinflint in her察she

left everything to the housekeeper察 and her own maid察 Mrs。 Jane察 who

went with her to Scotland察gave her the best of characters for generosity。

She seldom or ever wore a thing twice the same way察Mrs。 Jane told us察

and was always pulling her things to pieces and giving them away察never

being used察in her father's house察to think of expense in anything察and she

reckoned to be sure to go on the same way at Castle Rackrent察but when I

came to inquire察I learned that her father was so mad with her for running

off察after his locking her up and forbidding her to think any more of Sir

Condy察that he would not give her a farthing察and it was lucky for her she

had a few thousands of her own察 which had been left to her by a good

grandmother察and these were very convenient to begin with。 My master

and my lady set out in great style察they had the finest coach and chariot察

and horses and liveries察and cut the greatest dash in the county察returning

their wedding visits察and it was immediately reported that her father had

undertaken to pay all my master's debts察and of course all his tradesmen

gave him a new credit察and everything went on smack smooth察and I could

not but admire my lady's spirit察 and was proud to see Castle Rackrent

again in all its glory。 My lady had a fine taste for building察and furniture察

and playhouses察 and she turned everything topsy´turvy察 and made the

barrack´room into a theatre察as she called it察and she went on as if she had

a mint of money at her elbow察 and to be sure I thought she knew best察

especially as Sir Condy said nothing to it one way or the other。 All he

askedGod bless himwas to live in peace and quietness察and have his

bottle or his whisky´punch at night to himself。 Now this was little

                                                57

enough察 to be sure察 for any gentleman察 but my lady couldn't abide the

smell of the whisky´ punch。

'My dear' says he察'you liked it well enough before we were married察

and why not now'

'My dear' said she察 'I never smelt it察 or I assure you I should never

have prevailed upon myself to marry you。'

'My dear察I am sorry you did not smell it察but we can't help that now'

returned my master察without putting himself in a passion察or going out of

his way察but just fair and easy helped himself to another glass察and drank it

off to her good health。

All this the butler told me察 who was going backwards and forwards

unnoticed with the jug察 and hot water察 and sugar察 and all he thought

wanting。 Upon my master's swallowing the last glass of whisky´punch

my lady burst into tears察calling him an ungrateful察base察barbarous wretch察

and went off into a fit of hysterics察as I think Mrs。 Jane called it察and my

poor master was greatly frightened察this being the first thing of the kind he

had seen察 and he fell straight on his knees before her察 and察like a good´

hearted cratur as he was察ordered the whisky´punch out of the room察and

bid 'em throw open all the windows察and cursed himself此and then my lady

came to herself again察and when she saw him kneeling there察bid him get

up察and not forswear himself any more察for that she was sure he did not

love her察 and never had。 This we learned from Mrs。 Jane察 who was the

only person left present at all this。

'My dear' returns my master察thinking察to be sure察of Judy察as well he

might察'whoever told you so is an incendiary察and I'll have 'em turned out

of the house this minute察if you'll only let me know which of them it was。'

'Told me what' said my lady察starting upright in her chair。

'Nothing at all察nothing at all' said my master察seeing he had overshot

himself察and that my lady spoke at random察'but what you said just now察

that I did not love you察Bella察who told you that'

'My own sense' she said察and she put her handkerchief to her face察and

leant back upon Mrs。 Jane察and fell to sobbing as if her heart would break。

'Why now察Bella察this is very strange of you' said my poor master察'if

nobody has told you nothing察what is it you are taking on for at this rate察
