that Clifford察that cruel child´killer。 CLIFFORD。 I slew thy father察call'st
thou him a child拭RICHARD。 Ay察like a dastard and a treacherous coward察
As thou didst kill our tender brother Rutland察But ere sunset I'll make thee
curse the deed。 KING HENRY。 Have done with words察my lords察and hear
me speak。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Defy them then察or else hold close thy
lips。 KING HENRY。 I prithee give no limits to my tongue此I am a king察
and privileg'd to speak。 CLIFFORD。 My liege察 the wound that bred this
meeting here Cannot be cur'd by words察 therefore be still。 RICHARD。
Then察 executioner察 unsheathe thy sword。 By Him that made us all察 I am
resolv'd That Clifford's manhood lies upon his tongue。 EDWARD。 Say察
Henry察shall I have my right察or no拭A thousand men have broke their fasts
to´day That ne'er shall dine unless thou yield the crown。 WARWICK。 If
thou deny察their blood upon thy head察For York in justice puts his armour
on。 PRINCE OF WALES。 If that be right which Warwick says is right察
There is no wrong察but every thing is right。 RICHARD。 Whoever got thee察
there thy mother stands察 For well I wot thou hast thy mother's tongue。
QUEEN MARGARET。 But thou art neither like thy sire nor dam察But like
a foul misshapen stigmatic察 Mark'd by the destinies to be avoided察 As
venom toads or lizards' dreadful stings。 RICHARD。 Iron of Naples hid

with English gilt察Whose father bears the title of a king´ As if a channel
should be call'd the sea´ Sham'st thou not察 knowing whence thou art
extraught察To let thy tongue detect thy base´born heart拭EDWARD。 A wisp
of straw were worth a thousand crowns To make this shameless callet
know herself。 Helen of Greece was fairer far than thou察 Although thy
husband may be Menelaus察And ne'er was Agamemmon's brother wrong'd
By that false woman as this king by thee。 His father revell'd in the heart of
France察And tam'd the King察 and made the Dauphin stoop察And had he
match'd according to his state察He might have kept that glory to this day察
But when he took a beggar to his bed And grac'd thy poor sire with his
bridal day察Even then that sunshine brew'd a show'r for him That wash'd
his father's fortunes forth of France And heap'd sedition on his crown at
home。 For what hath broach'd this tumult but thy pride拭Hadst thou been
meek察 our title still had slept察And we察 in pity of the gentle King察 Had
slipp'd our claim until another age。 GEORGE。 But when we saw our
sunshine made thy spring察And that thy summer bred us no increase察We
set the axe to thy usurping root察And though the edge hath something hit
ourselves察Yet know thou察since we have begun to strike察We'll never leave
till we have hewn thee down察 Or bath'd thy growing with our heated
bloods。 EDWARD。 And in this resolution I defy thee察 Not willing any
longer conference察 Since thou deniest the gentle King to speak。 Sound
trumpets察let our bloody colours wave察And either victory or else a grave
QUEEN MARGARET。 Stay察Edward。 EDWARD。 No察wrangling woman察
we'll no longer stay察 These words will cost ten thousand lives this day。

SCENE III。 A field of battle between Towton and
Saxton察in Yorkshire
Alarum察excursions。 Enter WARWICK
WARWICK。 Forspent with toil察as runners with a race察I lay me down
a little while to breathe察For strokes receiv'd and many blows repaid Have
robb'd my strong´knit sinews of their strength察And spite of spite needs
must I rest awhile。
Enter EDWARD察running
EDWARD。 Smile察gentle heaven察or strike察ungentle death察For this
world frowns察 and Edward's sun is clouded。 WARWICK。 How now察 my
lord。 What hap拭What hope of good拭
Enter GEORGE
GEORGE。 Our hap is lost察our hope but sad despair察Our ranks are
broke察and ruin follows us。 What counsel give you拭Whither shall we fly拭
EDWARD。 Bootless is flight此they follow us with wings察And weak we are察
and cannot shun pursuit。
Enter RICHARD
RICHARD。 Ah察 Warwick察 why hast thou withdrawn thyself拭 Thy
brother's blood the thirsty earth hath drunk察Broach'd with the steely point
of Clifford's lance察And in the very pangs of death he cried察 Like to a
dismal clangor heard from far察 'Warwick察 revenge Brother察 revenge my
death。' So察underneath the belly of their steeds察That stain'd their fetlocks
in his smoking blood察The noble gentleman gave up the ghost。 WARWICK。
Then let the earth be drunken with our blood。 I'll kill my horse察because I
will not fly。 Why stand we like soft´hearted women here察 Wailing our
losses察 whiles the foe doth rage察And look upon察 as if the tragedy Were
play'd in jest by counterfeiting actors拭 Here on my knee I vow to God
above I'll never pause again察never stand still察Till either death hath clos'd
these eyes of mine Or fortune given me measure of revenge。 EDWARD。 O
Warwick察I do bend my knee with thine察And in this vow do chain my soul
to thine And ere my knee rise from the earth's cold face I throw my hands察
mine eyes察my heart to Thee察Thou setter´up and plucker´down of kings察

Beseeching Thee察if with Thy will it stands That to my foes this body must
be prey察 Yet that Thy brazen gates of heaven may ope And give sweet
passage to my sinful soul。 Now察 lords察 take leave until we meet again察
Where'er it be察 in heaven or in earth。 RICHARD。 Brother察 give me thy
hand察and察gentle Warwick察Let me embrace thee in my weary arms。 I that
did never weep now melt with woe That winter should cut off our spring´
time so。 WARWICK。 Away察 away Once more察 sweet lords察 farewell。
GEORGE。 Yet let us all together to our troops察And give them leave to fly
that will not stay察And call them pillars that will stand to us察And if we
thrive察promise them such rewards As victors wear at the Olympian games。
This may plant courage in their quailing breasts察For yet is hope of life and
victory。 Forslow no longer察make we hence amain。 Exeunt

SCENE IV。 Another part of the field
Excursions。 Enter RICHARD and CLIFFORD
RICHARD。 Now察 Clifford察 I have singled thee alone。 Suppose this
arm is for the Duke of York察And this for Rutland察both bound to revenge察
Wert thou environ'd with a brazen wall。 CLIFFORD。 Now察Richard察I am
with thee here alone。 This is the hand that stabbed thy father York察And
this the hand that slew thy brother Rutland察 And here's the heart that
triumphs in their death And cheers these hands that slew thy sire and
brother To execute the like upon thyself察And so察have at thee 。They fightА
Enter WARWICK察CLIFFORD flies
RICHARD。 Nay察Warwick察single out some other chase察For I myself
will hunt this wolf to death。 Exeunt

SCENE V。 Another part of the field
Alarum。 Enter KING HENRY alone
KING HENRY。 This battle fares like to the morning's war察 When
dying clouds contend with growing light察 What time the shepherd察
blowing of his nails察Can neither call it perfect day nor night。 Now sways
it this way察like a mighty sea Forc'd by the tide to combat with the wind察
Now sways it that way察like the selfsame sea Forc'd to retire by fury of the
wind。 Sometime the flood prevails察and then the wind察Now one the better察
then another best察Both tugging to be victors察breast to breast察Yet neither
conqueror nor conquered。 So is the equal poise of this fell war。 Here on
this molehill will I sit me down。 To whom God will察there be the victory
For Margaret my queen察and Clifford
