comes my brother Montague。 Attend me察lords。 The proud insulting Queen察
With Clifford and the haught Northumberland察And of their feather many
moe proud birds察Have wrought the easy´melting King like wax。 He swore
consent to your succession察His oath enrolled in the parliament察And now
to London all the crew are gone To frustrate both his oath and what beside
May make against the house of Lancaster。 Their power察I think察is thirty
thousand strong。 Now if the help of Norfolk and myself察 With all the
friends that thou察 brave Earl of March察 Amongst the loving Welshmen
canst procure察Will but amount to five and twenty thousand察Why察Via to
London will we march amain察And once again bestride our foaming steeds察
And once again cry 'Charge upon our foes' But never once again turn
back and fly。 RICHARD。 Ay察now methinks I hear great Warwick speak。
Ne'er may he live to see a sunshine day That cries 'Retire' if Warwick bid
him stay。 EDWARD。 Lord Warwick察 on thy shoulder will I lean察 And
when thou fail'st´ as God forbid the hour Must Edward fall察which peril
heaven forfend。 WARWICK。 No longer Earl of March察but Duke of York察
The next degree is England's royal throne察For King of England shalt thou
be proclaim'd In every borough as we pass along察And he that throws not
up his cap for joy Shall for the fault make forfeit of his head。 King Edward察
valiant Richard察Montague察Stay we no longer察dreaming of renown察But
sound the trumpets and about our task。 RICHARD。 Then察Clifford察were
thy heart as hard as steel察As thou hast shown it flinty by thy deeds察I come
to pierce it or to give thee mine。 EDWARD。 Then strike up drums。 God

SCENE II。 Before York
Flourish。 Enter KING HENRY察 QUEEN MARGARET察 the PRINCE
OF WALES察 CLIFFORD察 NORTHUMBERLAND察 with drum and
trumpets
QUEEN MARGARET。 Welcome察 my lord察 to this brave town of
York。 Yonder's the head of that arch´enemy That sought to be encompass'd
with your crown。 Doth not the object cheer your heart察 my lord拭 KING
HENRY。 Ay察 as the rocks cheer them that fear their wreck´ To see this
sight察it irks my very soul。 Withhold revenge察dear God察'tis not my fault察
Nor wittingly have I infring'd my vow。 CLIFFORD。 My gracious liege察
this too much lenity And harmful pity must be laid aside。 To whom do
lions cast their gentle looks拭Not to the beast that would usurp their den。
Whose hand is that the forest bear doth lick拭Not his that spoils her young
before her face。 Who scapes the lurking serpent's mortal sting拭Not he that
sets his foot upon her back察The smallest worm will turn察being trodden on察
And doves will peck in safeguard of their brood。 Ambitious York did level
at thy crown察Thou smiling while he knit his angry brows。 He察but a Duke察
would have his son a king察And raise his issue like a loving sire此Thou察
being a king察bless'd with a goodly son察Didst yield consent to disinherit
him察 Which argued thee a most unloving father。 Unreasonable creatures
feed their young察And though man's face be fearful to their eyes察Yet察in
protection of their tender ones察Who hath not seen them´ even with those
wings Which sometime they have us'd with fearful flight´ Make war with
him that climb'd unto their nest察Offering their own lives in their young's
defence For shame察my liege察make them your precedent Were it not pity
that this goodly boy Should lose his birthright by his father's fault察And
long hereafter say unto his child 'What my great´grandfather and grandsire
got My careless father fondly gave away'拭Ah察 what a shame were this
Look on the boy察 And let his manly face察 which promiseth Successful
fortune察 steel thy melting heart To hold thine own and leave thine own
with him。 KING HENRY。 Full well hath Clifford play'd the orator察
Inferring arguments of mighty force。 But察 Clifford察 tell me察 didst thou
never hear That things ill got had ever bad success拭And happy always

was it for that son Whose father for his hoarding went to hell拭I'll leave
my son my virtuous deeds behind察And would my father had left me no
more For all the rest is held at such a rate As brings a thousand´fold more
care to keep Than in possession any jot of pleasure。 Ah察 cousin York
would thy best friends did know How it doth grieve me that thy head is
here QUEEN MARGARET。 My lord察cheer up your spirits察our foes are
nigh察 And this soft courage makes your followers faint。 You promis'd
knighthood to our forward son此 Unsheathe your sword and dub him
presently。 Edward察kneel down。 KING HENRY。 Edward Plantagenet察arise
a knight察 And learn this lesson此 Draw thy sword in right。 PRINCE OF
WALES。 My gracious father察by your kingly leave察I'll draw it as apparent
to the crown察And in that quarrel use it to the death。 CLIFFORD。 Why察
that is spoken like a toward prince。
Enter a MESSENGER
MESSENGER。 Royal commanders察be in readiness察For with a band
of thirty thousand men Comes Warwick察backing of the Duke of York察And
in the towns察as they do march along察Proclaims him king察and many fly to
him。 Darraign your battle察for they are at hand。 CLIFFORD。 I would your
Highness would depart the field此The Queen hath best success when you
are absent。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Ay察good my lord察and leave us to our
fortune。 KING HENRY。 Why察 that's my fortune too察 therefore I'll stay。
NORTHUMBERLAND。 Be it with resolution察then察to fight。 PRINCE OF
WALES。 My royal father察cheer these noble lords察And hearten those that
fight in your defence。 Unsheathe your sword察 good father察 cry 'Saint
George'
March。 Enter EDWARD察 GEORGE察 RICHARD察 WARWICK察
NORFOLK察MONTAGUE察and soldiers
EDWARD。 Now察 perjur'd Henry察 wilt thou kneel for grace And set
thy diadem upon my head察 Or bide the mortal fortune of the field拭
QUEEN MARGARET。 Go rate thy minions察 proud insulting boy。
Becomes it thee to be thus bold in terms Before thy sovereign and thy
lawful king拭EDWARD。 I am his king察and he should bow his knee。 I was
adopted heir by his consent此Since when察his oath is broke察for察as I hear察
You that are King察though he do wear the crown察Have caus'd him by new

'Twas you that kill'd young Rutland察was it not拭CLIFFORD。 Ay察and old
York察and yet not satisfied。 RICHARD。 For God's sake察lords察give signal
to the fight。 WARWICK。 What say'st thou察 Henry拭 Wilt thou yield the
crown拭 QUEEN MARGARET。 Why察 how now察 long´tongu'd Warwick
Dare you speak拭When you and I met at Saint Albans last Your legs did
better service than your hands。 WARWICK。 Then 'twas my turn to fly察and
now 'tis thine。 CLIFFORD。 You said so much before察 and yet you fled。
WARWICK。 'Twas not your valour察 Clifford察 drove me thence。
NORTHUMBERLAND。 No察nor your manhood that durst make you stay。
RICHARD。 Northumberland察 I hold thee reverently。 Break off the
