than crystal察 became of a colour like blood。 The whole of this superb
assembly was involuntarily drawn towards the declivity of the hill察 with
downcast eyes they all stood abashed察 each upbraiding himself with the
evil he had done察 the heart of Dilara palpitated察 and the chief of the
eunuchs with a sigh of contrition implored pardon of the women察whom
for his own satisfaction he had so often tormented。
Vathek and Nouronihar turned pale in their litter察and察regarding each
other with haggard looks察reproached themselvesthe one with a thousand
of the blackest crimes察a thousand projects of impious ambitionthe other
with the desolation of her family察 and the perdition of the amiable
Gulchenrouz。 Nouronihar persuaded herself that she heard in the fatal
music the groans of her dying father察 and Vathek the sobs of the fifty
children he had sacrificed to the Giaour。 Amidst these complicated pangs
of anguish they perceived themselves impelled towards the shepherd察
whose countenance was so commanding察that Vathek for the first time felt
overawed察whilst Nouronihar concealed her face with her hands。
The music paused察 and the Genius察 addressing the Caliph察 said此
;Deluded Prince to whom Providence hath confided the care of
innumerable subjects察is it thus that thou fulfillest thy mission拭Thy crimes
are already completed察 and art thou now hastening towards thy
punishment拭 Thou knowest that beyond these mountains Eblis and his
accursed Dives hold their infernal empire察 and察 seduced by a malignant
phantom察thou art proceeding to surrender thyself to them This moment
is the last of grace allowed thee察 abandon thy atrocious purpose察 return察
give back Nouronihar to her father察who still retains a few sparks of life察
destroy thy tower with all its abominations察 drive Carathis from thy
councils察 be just to thy subjects察 respect the ministers of the Prophet察

compensate for thy impieties by an exemplary life察 and察 instead of
squandering thy days in voluptuous indulgence察lament thy crimes on the
sepulchres of thy ancestors。 Thou beholdest the clouds that obscure the
sun察at the instant he recovers his splendour察if thy heart be not changed察
the time of mercy assigned thee will be past for ever。;
Vathek察depressed with fear察was on the point of prostrating himself at
the feet of the shepherd察whom he perceived to be of a nature superior to
man察 but察 his pride prevailing察 he audaciously lifted his head察 and察
glancing at him one of his terrible looks察 said此 Whoever thou art察
withhold thy useless admonitions察 thou wouldst either delude me察 or art
thyself deceived。 If what I have done be so criminal as thou pretendest察
there remains not for me a moment of grace察 I have traversed a sea of
blood to acquire a power which will make thy equals tremble察deem not
that I shall retire when in view of the port察or that I will relinquish her who
is dearer to me than either my life or thy mercy。 Let the sun appear let
him illumine my career it matters not where it may end。; On uttering
these words察which made even the Genius shudder察Vathek threw himself
into the arms of Nouronihar察 and commanded that his horse should be
forced back to the road。
There was no difficulty in obeying these orders察for the attraction had
ceased察the sun shone forth in all his glory察and the shepherd vanished with
a lamentable scream。
The fatal impression of the music of the Genius remained察
notwithstanding察 in the heart of Vathek's attendants察 they viewed each
other with looks of consternation察at the approach of night almost all of
them escaped察and of this numerous assemblage there only remained the
chief of the eunuchs察 some idolatrous slaves察 Dilara and a few other
women察who察like herself察were votaries of the religion of the Magi。
The Caliph察 fired with the ambition of prescribing laws to the
Intelligences of Darkness察 was but little embarrassed at this dereliction察
the impetuosity of his blood prevented him from sleeping察 nor did he
encamp any more as before。 Nouronihar察whose impatience察if possible察
exceeded his own察importuned him to hasten his march察and lavished on
him a thousand caresses to beguile all reflection察 she fancied herself

already more potent than Balkis察and pictured to her imagination the Genii
falling prostrate at the foot of her throne。 In this manner they advanced
by moonlight察till they came within view of the two towering rocks that
form a kind of portal to the valley察at whose extremity rose the vast ruins
of Istakar。 Aloft on the mountain glimmered the fronts of various royal
mausoleums察the horror of which was deepened by the shadows of night。
They passed through two villages almost deserted察 the only inhabitants
remaining being a few feeble old men察 who察 at the sight of horses and
litters察fell upon their knees and cried out此
;O Heaven is it then by these phantoms that we have been for six
months tormented拭 Alas it was from the terror of these spectres and the
noise beneath the mountains察that our people have fled察and left us at the
mercy of maleficent spirits ─
The Caliph察to whom these complaints were but unpromising auguries察
drove over the bodies of these wretched old men察and at length arrived at
the foot of the terrace of black marble察there he descended from his litter察
handing down Nouronihar察both with beating hearts stared wildly around
them察 and expected with an apprehensive shudder the approach of the
Giaour察but nothing as yet announced his appearance。
A death´like stillness reigned over the mountain and through the air察
the moon dilated on a vast platform the shades of the lofty columns察which
reached from the terrace almost to the clouds察the gloomy watch´towers察
whose numbers could not be counted察 were veiled by no roof察 and their
capitals察of an architecture unknown in the records of the earth察served as
an asylum for the birds of darkness察 which察 alarmed at the approach of
such visitants察fled away croaking。
The chief of the eunuchs察trembling with fear察besought Vathek that a
fire might be kindled。
;No ─replied he察 there is no time left to think of such trifles察abide
where thou art察and expect my commands。;
Having thus spoken察 he presented his hand to Nouronihar察 and察
ascending the steps of a vast staircase察 reached the terrace察 which was
flagged with squares of marble察and resembled a smooth expanse of water察
upon whose surface not a leaf ever dared to vegetate察on the right rose the

watch´towers察ranged before the ruins of an immense palace察whose walls
were embossed with various figures察 in front stood forth the colossal
forms of four creatures察 composed of the leopard and the griffin察 and察
though but of stone察 inspired emotions of terror察 near these were
distinguished by the splendour of the moon察 which streamed full on the
place察characters like those on the sabres of the Giaour察that possessed the
same virtue of changing every moment察these察after vacillating for some
time察 at last fixed in Arabic letters察 and prescribed to the Caliph the
following words此
;Vathek thou hast violated the conditions of my parchment察 and
deservest to be sent back察 but察 in favour to thy companion察 and as the
meed for what thou hast done to obtain it察EBLIS permitteth that the portal
