     KHOTEN。 PROCESSIONS OF IMAGES。 THE KING'S NEW

MONASTERY。

Yu´teen is a pleasant and prosperous kingdom察 with a numerous and

flourishing population。 The inhabitants all profess our Law察 and join

together in its religious music for their enjoyment。1АThe monks amount

to several myriads察most of whom are students of the mahayana。2АThey

all receive their food from the common store。3АThroughout the country

the houses of the people stand apart like separate stars察and each family

has a small tope4Аreared in front of its door。 The smallest of these may be

twenty cubits high察 or rather more。5А They make in the monasteries

The lord of the country lodged Fa´hien and the others comfortably察and

supplied their wants察in a monastery6Аcalled Gomati撮6Аof the mahayana

school。 Attached to it there are three thousand monks察who are called to

Beginning on the first day of the fourth month察they sweep and water the

held in great reverence by the king察took precedence of all others in the

procession。 At a distance of three or four le from the city察 they made a

four´wheeled image car察 more than thirty cubits high察 which looked like

the great hall of a monastery moving along。 The seven precious

substances11Аwere grandly displayed about it察with silken streamers and

the car察with two Bodhisattvas13Аin attendance upon it察while devas14А

were made to follow in waiting察all brilliantly carved in gold and silver察

and hanging in the air。 When the car was a hundred paces from the gate察

the king put off his crown of state察changed his dress for a fresh suit察and

with bare feet察 carrying in his hands flowers and incense察 and with two

rows of attending followers察went out at the gate to meet the image察and察

with his head and face bowed to the ground察he did homage at its feet察

and then scattered the flowers and burnt the incense。 When the image was

entering the gate察the queen and the brilliant ladies with her in the gallery

above scattered far and wide all kinds of flowers察which floated about and

fell promiscuously to the ground。 In this way everything was done to

promote the dignity of the occasion。 The carriages of the monasteries were

all different察 and each one had its own day for the procession。 The

ceremony began on the first day of the fourth month察and ended on the

fourteenth察after which the king and queen returned to the palace。

Seven or eight le to the west of the city there is what is called the

King's New Monastery察 the building of which took eighty years察 and

extended over three reigns。 It may be 250 cubits in height察rich in elegant

carving and inlaid work察covered above with gold and silver察and finished

throughout with a combination of all the precious substances。 Behind the

tope there has been built a Hall of Buddha撮15Аof the utmost magnificence

and beauty察 the beams察 pillars察 venetianed doors察 and windows being all

overlaid with gold´leaf。 Besides this察 the apartments for the monks are

imposingly and elegantly decorated察beyond the power of words to express。

Of whatever things of highest value and preciousness the kings in the six

countries on the east of the Ts'ung range of mountains16Аare possessed察

they contribute the greater portion to this monastery察using but a small

portion of them themselves。17А
