the very best way of dealing with their foe察provided they could have kept
him quiet while the conflagration was going forward。
But no sooner did Hercules begin to be scorched察than up he started察
with his hair in a red blaze。
;What's all this拭─ he cried察 bewildered with sleep察 and staring about
him as if he expected to see another Giant。
At that moment the twenty thousand archers twanged their bowstrings察
and the arrows came whizzing察like so many winged mosquitoes察right into
the face of Hercules。 But I doubt whether more than half a dozen of them
punctured the skin察which was remarkably tough察as you know the skin of
a hero has good need to be。
;Villain ─shouted all the Pygmies at once。 ;You have killed the Giant
Antaeus察our great brother察and the ally of our nation。 We declare bloody
war against you察and will slay you on the spot。;
Surprised at the shrill piping of so many little voices察Hercules察after
putting out the conflagration of his hair察gazed all round about察but could
see nothing。 At last察however察looking narrowly on the ground察he espied
the innumerable assemblage of Pygmies at his feet。 He stooped down察and
taking up the nearest one between his thumb and finger察 set him on the

palm of his left hand察and held him at a proper distance for examination。 It
chanced to be the very identical Pygmy who had spoken from the top of
the toadstool察and had offered himself as a champion to meet Hercules in
single combat。
;What in the world察my little fellow察─ejaculated Hercules察 may you
be拭─
;I am your enemy察─ answered the valiant Pygmy察 in his mightiest
squeak。 ;You have slain the enormous Antaeus察 our brother by the
mother's side察and for ages the faithful ally of our illustrious nation。 We are
determined to put you to death察and for my own part察I challenge you to
instant battle察on equal ground。;
Hercules was so tickled with the Pygmy's big words and warlike
gestures察 that he burst into a great explosion of laughter察 and almost
dropped the poor little mite of a creature off the palm of his hand察through
the ecstasy and convulsion of his merriment。
;Upon my word察─cried he察 I thought I had seen wonders before to´
dayhydras with nine heads察 stags with golden horns察 six´legged men察
three´headed dogs察 giants with furnaces in their stomachs察 and nobody
knows what besides。 But here察on the palm of my hand察stands a wonder
that outdoes them all Your body察my little friend察is about the size of an
ordinary man's finger。 Pray察how big may your soul be拭─
;As big as your own ─said the Pygmy。
Hercules was touched with the little man's dauntless courage察 and
could not help acknowledging such a brotherhood with him as one hero
feels for another。
;My good little people察─said he察making a low obeisance to the grand
nation察 not for all the world would I do an intentional injury to such brave
fellows as you Your hearts seem to me so exceedingly great察that察upon
my honor察 I marvel how your small bodies can contain them。 I sue for
peace察and察as a condition of it察will take five strides察and be out of your
kingdom at the sixth。 Good´bye。 I shall pick my steps carefully察for fear of
treading upon some fifty of you察without knowing it。 Ha察ha察ha Ho察ho察
ho For once察Hercules acknowledges himself vanquished。;
Some writers say察that Hercules gathered up the whole race of Pygmies

in his lion's skin察 and carried them home to Greece察 for the children of
King Eurystheus to play with。 But this is a mistake。 He left them察one and
all察within their own territory察where察for aught I can tell察their descendants
are alive to the present day察 building their little houses察 cultivating their
little fields察spanking their little children察waging their little warfare with
the cranes察 doing their little business察 whatever it may be察 and reading
their little histories of ancient times。 In those histories察perhaps察it stands
recorded察 that察 a great many centuries ago察 the valiant Pygmies avenged
the death of the Giant Antaeus by scaring away the mighty Hercules。

THE DRAGON'S TEETH。
Cadmus察Phoenix察and Cilix察the three sons of King Agenor察and their
little sister Europa who was a very beautiful child察were at play together
near the seashore in their father's kingdom of Phoenicia。 They had rambled
to some distance from the palace where their parents dwelt察and were now
in a verdant meadow察on one side of which lay the sea察all sparkling and
dimpling in the sunshine察 and murmuring gently against the beach。 The
three boys were very happy察 gathering flowers察 and twining them into
garlands察with which they adorned the little Europa。 Seated on the grass察
the child was almost hidden under an abundance of buds and blossoms察
whence her rosy face peeped merrily out察and察as Cadmus said察 was the
prettiest of all the flowers。
Just then察there came a splendid butterfly察fluttering along the meadow察
and Cadmus察Phoenix察and Cilix set off in pursuit of it察crying out that it
was a flower with wings。 Europa察who was a little wearied with playing all
day long察did not chase the butterfly with her brothers察but sat still where
they had left her察 and closed her eyes。 For a while察 she listened to the
pleasant murmur of the sea察 which was like a voice saying ;Hush ─ and
bidding her go to sleep。 But the pretty child察if she slept at all察could not
have slept more than a moment察when she heard something trample on the
grass察not far from her察and察peeping out from the heap of flowers察beheld
a snow´white bull。
And whence could this bull have com 拭Europa and her brothers had
been a long time playing in the meadow察and had seen no cattle察nor other
living thing察either there or on the neighboring hills。
;Brother Cadmus ─ cried Europa察 starting up out of the midst of the
roses and lilies。 ;Phoenix Cilix Where are you all拭 Help Help Come
and drive away this bull ─
But her brothers were too far off to hear察especially as the fright took
away Europa's voice察and hindered her from calling very loudly。 So there
she stood察with her pretty mouth wide open察as pale as the white lilies that
were twisted among the other flowers in her garlands。
Nevertheless察it was the suddenness with which she had perceived the

bull察rather than anything frightful in his appearance察that caused Europa
so much alarm。 On looking at him more attentively察she began to see that
he was a beautiful animal察 and even fancied a particularly amiable
expression in his face。 As for his breaththe breath of cattle察you know察is
always sweetit was as fragrant as if he had been grazing on no other food
than rosebuds察 or at least察 the most delicate of clover blossoms。 Never
before did a bull have such bright and tender eyes察and such smooth horns
of ivory察as this one。 And the bull ran little races察and capered sportively
around the child察so that she quite forgot how big and strong he was察and察
from the gentleness and playfulness of his actions察soon came to consider
him as innocent a creature as a pet lamb。
Thus察frightened as she at first was察 you might by and by have seen
Europa stroking the bull's forehead with her small white hand察and taking
the garlands off her own head to hang them on his neck and ivory horns。
Then she pulled up some blades of grass察and he ate them out of her hand察
not as if he were hungry察 but because he wanted to be friends with the
child察and took pleasure in eating what she had touched。 Well察my stars
was there ever such a gentle察 sweet察 pretty察 and amiable creature as this
bull察and ever such a nice playmate for a little girl拭
