houses察and察in coming home察forgathered on the road with the Glasgow

carrier察who told them that news had come察in the London Gazette察of a

battle察in which the regiment that Thomas had listed in was engaged察and

had suffered loss both in rank and file察none doubting that their head was

in the number of the slain察the whole family grat aloud察and came to the

manse察bewailing him as no more察and it afterwards turned out to be the

case察 making it plain to me that there is a farseeing discernment in the

spirit察that reaches beyond the scope of our incarnate senses。

But the weight of the war did not end with these afflictions察 for察

instead of the sorrow that the listing caused察and the anxiety after察and the

grief of the bloody tidings察 operating as wholesome admonition to our

young men察the natural perversity of the human heart was more and more

manifested。 A wonderful interest was raised among us all to hear of what

was going on in the world察 insomuch察 that I myself was no longer

contented with the relation of the news of the month in the Scots

Magazine察 but joined with my father´in´ law察 Mr Kibbock察 to get a

newspaper twice a´week from Edinburgh。 As for Lady Macadam察who

being naturally an impatient woman察she had one sent to her three times a´

week from London察so that we had something fresh five times every week察

and the old papers were lent out to the families who had friends in the

wars。 This was done on my suggestion察hoping it would make all content

with their peaceable lot察 but dominion for a time had been given to the

power of contrariness察 and it had quite an opposite effect。 It begot a

curiosity察egging on to enterprise察and察greatly to my sorrow察three of the

brawest lads in the parish察or in any parish察all in one day took on with a

party of the Scots Greys that were then lying in Ayr察and nothing would

satisfy the callans at Mr Lorimore's school察but察instead of their innocent

plays with girs察 and shinties察 and sicklike察 they must go ranking like

soldiers察 and fight sham´fights in bodies。 In short察 things grew to a

perfect hostility察for a swarm of weans came out from the schools of Irville

on a Saturday afternoon察 and察 forgathering with ours察 they had a battle

with stones on the toll´road察such as was dreadful to hear of察for many a

one got a mark that day he will take to the grave with him。

It was not察 however察 by accidents of the field only察 that we were

afflicted察 those of the flood察 too察 were sent likewise against us。 In the

month of October察when the corn was yet in the holms察and on the cold

land by the river side察the water of Irville swelled to a great spait察 from

bank to brae察sweeping all before it察and roaring察in its might察like an agent

of divine displeasure察 sent forth to punish the inhabitants of the earth。

The loss of the victual was a thing reparable察and those that suffered did

not greatly complain察 for察 in other respects察 their harvest had been

plenteous此 but the river察 in its fury察 not content with overflowing the

lands察 burst through the sandy hills with a raging force察 and a riving

asunder of the solid ground察as when the fountains of the great deep were

broken up。 All in the parish was a´foot察and on the hills察some weeping

and wringing their hands察 not knowing what would happen察 when they

beheld the landmarks of the waters deserted察and the river breaking away

through the country察 like the war´horse set loose in his pasture察 and

glorying in his might。 By this change in the way and channel of the river察

all the mills in our parish were left more than half a mile from dam or lade察

and the farmers through the whole winter察till the new mills were built察had

to travel through a heavy road with their victual察 which was a great

grievance察 and added not a little to the afflictions of this unhappy year察

which to me were not without a particularity察by the death of a full cousin

of Mrs Balwhidder察 my first wife察 she was grievously burnt by looting

over a candle。 Her mutch察which was of the high structure then in vogue察

took fire察and being fastened with corking´pins to a great toupee察it could

not be got off until she had sustained a deadly injury察 of which察 after

lingering long察she was kindly eased by her removal from trouble。 This

sore accident was to me a matter of deep concern and cogitation察but as it

happened in Tarbolton察and no in our parish察I have only alluded to it to

show察 that when my people were chastised by the hand of Providence察

their pastor was not spared察but had a drop from the same vial。

           CHAPTER XIX YEAR 1778

This year was as the shadow of the bygane此 there was less actual

suffering察but what we came through cast a gloom among us察and we did

not get up our spirits till the spring was far advanced察the corn was in the

ear察 and the sun far towards midsummer height察 before there was any

regular show of gladness in the parish。

It was clear to me that the wars were not to be soon over察for I noticed察

in the course of this year察that there was a greater christening of lad bairns

than had ever been in any year during my incumbency察and grave and wise

persons察 observant of the signs of the times察 said察 that it had been long

held as a sure prognostication of war察 when the births of male children

outnumbered that of females。

Our chief misfortune in this year was a revival of that wicked mother

of many mischiefs察the smuggling trade察which concerned me greatly察but

it was not allowed to it to make any thing like a permanent stay among us察

though in some of the neighbouring parishes察its ravages察both in morals

and property察were very distressing察and many a mailing was sold to pay

for the triumphs of the cutters and gaugers察for the government was by this

time grown more eager察and the war caused the king's ships to be out and

about察which increased the trouble of the smugglers察whose wits in their

turn were thereby much sharpened。

After Mrs Malcolm察by the settlement of Captain Macadam察had given

up her dealing察 two maiden women察 that were sisters察 Betty and Janet

Pawkie察 came in among us from Ayr察 where they had friends in league

with some of the laigh land folk察that carried on the contraband with the

Isle of Man察which was the very eye of the smuggling。 They took up the

tea´selling察which Mrs Malcolm had dropped察and did business on a larger

scale察 having a general huxtry察 with parliament´cakes察 and candles察 and

pincushions察as well as other groceries察in their window。 Whether they

had any contraband dealings察 or were only back´bitten察 I cannot take it

upon me to say察 but it was jealoused in the parish that the meal in the

sacks察that came to their door at night察and was sent to the Glasgow market

in the morning察 was not made of corn。 They were察 however察 decent

women察both sedate and orderly察the eldest察Betty Pawkie察was of a manly

stature察and had a long beard察which made her have a coarse look察but she

was察nevertheless察a worthy察well´doing creature察and at her death she left

ten pounds to the poor of the parish察as may be seen in the mortification

board that the session put up in the kirk as a testification and an example。

Shortly after the revival of the smuggling察 an exciseman was put

among us察and the first was Robin Bicker察a very civil lad that had been a
