him。 Perhaps Mrs。 Catherine expected him too察for she had offered many

times to run upwith my Lord's bootswith the hot waterto show Mr。

Brock the way察who sometimes condescended to officiate as barber。 But

on all these occasions Mrs。 Score had prevented her察not scolding察but with

much gentleness and smiling。 At last察more gentle and smiling than ever察

she came downstairs and said察 Catherine darling察his honour the Count is

mighty hungry this morning察and vows he could pick the wing of a fowl。

Run down察child察to Farmer Brigg's and get one此pluck it before you bring

it察you know察and we will make his Lordship a pretty breakfast。;

Catherine took up her basket察 and away she went by the back´yard察

through the stables。 There she heard the little horse´boy whistling and

hissing after the manner of horseboys察 and there she learned that Mrs。

Score had been inventing an ingenious story to have her out of the way。

The ostler said he was just going to lead the two horses round to the door。

The Corporal had been察 and they were about to start on the instant for

Stratford。

The fact was that Count Gustavus Adolphus察far from wishing to pick

the wing of a fowl察had risen with a horror and loathing for everything in

the shape of food察and for any liquor stronger than small beer。 Of this he

had drunk a cup察 and said he should ride immediately to Stratford察 and

when察on ordering his horses察he had asked politely of the landlady ;why

the d SHE always came up察and why she did not send the girl察─Mrs。

Score informed the Count that her Catherine was gone out for a walk

along with the young man to whom she was to be married察and would not

be visible that day。 On hearing this the Captain ordered his horses that

moment察 and abused the wine察 the bed察 the house察 the landlady察 and

everything connected with the ;Bugle Inn。;

Out the horses came此the little boys of the village gathered round察the

recruits察 with bunches of ribands in their beavers察 appeared presently察

Corporal Brock came swaggering out察 and察 slapping the pleased

blacksmith on the back察bade him mount his horse察while the boys hurrah'd。

Then the Captain came out察gloomy and majestic察to him Mr。 Brock made

a military salute察 which clumsily察 and with much grinning察 the recruits

imitated。 ;I shall walk on with these brave fellows察your honour察and meet

you at Stratford察─ said the Corporal。 ;Good察─ said the Captain察 as he

mounted。 The landlady curtseyed察 the children hurrah'd more察 the little

horse´boy察who held the bridle with one hand and the stirrup with the other察

and expected a crown´piece from such a noble gentleman察got only a kick

and a curse察as Count von Galgenstein shouted察 D´ you all察get out of

the way ─and galloped off察and John Hayes察who had been sneaking about

the inn all the morning察felt a weight off his heart when he saw the Captain

ride off alone。

O foolish Mrs。 Score O dolt of a John Hayes If the landlady had

allowed the Captain and the maid to have their way察and meet but for a

minute before recruits察sergeant察and all察it is probable that no harm would

have been done察and that this history would never have been written。

When Count von Galgenstein had ridden half a mile on the Stratford

road察 looking as black and dismal as Napoleon galloping from the

romantic village of Waterloo察he espied察a few score yards onwards察at the

turn of the road察 a certain object which caused him to check his horse

suddenly察brought a tingling red into his cheeks察and made his heart to go

thumpthump against his side。 A young lass was sauntering slowly along

the footpath察with a basket swinging from one hand察and a bunch of hedge´

flowers in the other。 She stopped once or twice to add a fresh one to her

nosegay察and might have seen him察the Captain thought察but no察she never

looked directly towards him察and still walked on。 Sweet innocent she was

singing as if none were near察her voice went soaring up to the clear sky察

and the Captain put his horse on the grass察 that the sound of the hoofs

might not disturb the music。

;When the kine had given a pailful察 And the sheep came bleating

home察Poll察who knew it would be healthful察Went a´walking out with Tom。

Hand in hand察sir察on the land察sir察As they walked to and fro察Tom made

jolly love to Polly察But was answered no察no察no。;

The Captain had put his horse on the grass察that the sound of his hoofs

might not disturb the music察and now he pushed its head on to the bank察

where straightway ;George of Denmark; began chewing of such a salad as

grew there。 And now the Captain slid off stealthily察and smiling comically察

and hitching up his great jack´boots察and moving forward with a jerking

he first looked towards his master and paused察as it were察irresolutely察then察

by a sudden impulse察flinging up his tail and his hind legs察he scampered

down the road。

Mrs。 Hall ran lightly after the horse察and the Captain after Mrs。 Hall察

and the horse ran quicker and quicker every moment察and might have led

them a long chasewhen lo debouching from a twist in the road察came

the detachment of cavalry and infantry under Mr。 Brock。 The moment he

was out of sight of the village察that gentleman had desired the blacksmith
