bloody´minded Queen That led calm Henry察 though he were a king察As
doth a sail察 fill'd with a fretting gust察 Command an argosy to stern the
waves。 But think you察lords察that Clifford fled with them拭WARWICK。 No察
'tis impossible he should escape察For察though before his face I speak the
words察Your brother Richard mark'd him for the grave察And察whereso'er he
is察 he's surely dead。 CLIFFORD groans察 and diesА RICHARD。 Whose
soul is that which takes her heavy leave拭A deadly groan察 like life and
death's departing。 See who it is。 EDWARD。 And now the battle's ended察If

friend or foe察 let him be gently used。 RICHARD。 Revoke that doom of
mercy察 for 'tis Clifford察 Who not contented that he lopp'd the branch In
hewing Rutland when his leaves put forth察But set his murd'ring knife unto
the root From whence that tender spray did sweetly spring´ I mean our
princely father察 Duke of York。 WARWICK。 From off the gates of York
fetch down the head察 Your father's head察 which Clifford placed there察
Instead whereof let this supply the room。 Measure for measure must be
answered。 EDWARD。 Bring forth that fatal screech´owl to our house察That
nothing sung but death to us and ours。 Now death shall stop his dismal
threat'ning sound察 And his ill´boding tongue no more shall speak。
WARWICK。 I think his understanding is bereft。 Speak察Clifford察dost thou
know who speaks to thee拭Dark cloudy death o'ershades his beams of life察
And he nor sees nor hears us what we say。 RICHARD。 O察would he did
and so察 perhaps察 he doth。 'Tis but his policy to counterfeit察 Because he
would avoid such bitter taunts Which in the time of death he gave our
father。 GEORGE。 If so thou think'st察 vex him with eager words。
RICHARD。 Clifford察ask mercy and obtain no grace。 EDWARD。 Clifford察
repent in bootless penitence。 WARWICK。 Clifford察devise excuses for thy
faults。 GEORGE。 While we devise fell tortures for thy faults。 RICHARD。
Thou didst love York察 and I am son to York。 EDWARD。 Thou pitied'st
Rutland察I will pity thee。 GEORGE。 Where's Captain Margaret察to fence
you now拭WARWICK。 They mock thee察Clifford察swear as thou wast wont。
RICHARD。 What察 not an oath拭 Nay察 then the world goes hard When
Clifford cannot spare his friends an oath。 I know by that he's dead察and by
my soul察If this right hand would buy two hours' life察That I in all despite
might rail at him察This hand should chop it off察and with the issuing blood
Stifle the villain whose unstanched thirst York and young Rutland could
not satisfy。 WARWICK。 Ay察but he's dead。 Off with the traitor's head察And
rear it in the place your father's stands。 And now to London with
triumphant march察 There to be crowned England's royal King察 From
whence shall Warwick cut the sea to France察And ask the Lady Bona for
thy queen。 So shalt thou sinew both these lands together察 And察 having
France thy friend察thou shalt not dread The scatt'red foe that hopes to rise
again察For though they cannot greatly sting to hurt察Yet look to have them

Brittany I'll cross the sea To effect this marriage察 so it please my lord。
EDWARD。 Even as thou wilt察 sweet Warwick察 let it be察 For in thy
shoulder do I build my seat察And never will I undertake the thing Wherein
thy counsel and consent is wanting。 Richard察 I will create thee Duke of
Gloucester察And George察of Clarence察Warwick察as ourself察Shall do and

George of Gloucester察 For Gloucester's dukedom is too ominous。

Gloucester。 Now to London To see these honours in possession。 Exeunt

SCENE I。 A chase in the north of England
Enter two KEEPERS察with cross´bows in their hands
FIRST KEEPER。 Under this thick´grown brake we'll shroud
ourselves察 For through this laund anon the deer will come察And in this
covert will we make our stand察 Culling the principal of all the deer。
SECOND KEEPER。 I'll stay above the hill察 so both may shoot。 FIRST
KEEPER。 That cannot be察the noise of thy cross´bow Will scare the herd察
and so my shoot is lost。 Here stand we both察and aim we at the best察And察
for the time shall not seem tedious察I'll tell thee what befell me on a day In
this self´place where now we mean to stand。 SECOND KEEPER。 Here
comes a man察let's stay till he be past。
Enter KING HENRY察disguised察with a prayer´book
KING HENRY。 From Scotland am I stol'n察 even of pure love察 To
greet mine own land with my wishful sight。 No察Harry察Harry察'tis no land
of thine察Thy place is fill'd察thy sceptre wrung from thee察Thy balm wash'd
off wherewith thou wast anointed。 No bending knee will call thee Caesar
now察No humble suitors press to speak for right察No察not a man comes for
redress of thee察For how can I help them and not myself拭FIRST KEEPER。
Ay察here's a deer whose skin's a keeper's fee。 This is the quondam King察
let's seize upon him。 KING HENRY。 Let me embrace thee察sour adversity察
For wise men say it is the wisest course。 SECOND KEEPER。 Why linger
we拭 let us lay hands upon him。 FIRST KEEPER。 Forbear awhile察 we'll
hear a little more。 KING HENRY。 My Queen and son are gone to France
for aid察And察as I hear察the great commanding Warwick Is thither gone to
crave the French King's sister To wife for Edward。 If this news be true察
Poor queen and son察your labour is but lost察For Warwick is a subtle orator察
And Lewis a prince soon won with moving words。 By this account察then察
Margaret may win him察For she's a woman to be pitied much。 Her sighs
will make a batt'ry in his breast察Her tears will pierce into a marble heart察
The tiger will be mild whiles she doth mourn察And Nero will be tainted
with remorse To hear and see her plaints察her brinish tears。 Ay察but she's
come to beg此Warwick察to give。 She察on his left side察craving aid for Henry此
He察on his right察asking a wife for Edward。 She weeps察and says her Henry

is depos'd此 He smiles察 and says his Edward is install'd察 That she察 poor
wretch察 for grief can speak no more察 Whiles Warwick tells his title察
smooths the wrong察 Inferreth arguments of mighty strength察 And in
conclusion wins the King from her With promise of his sister察and what
else察 To strengthen and support King Edward's place。 O Margaret察 thus
'twill be察and thou察poor soul察Art then forsaken察as thou went'st forlorn
SECOND KEEPER。 Say察what art thou that talk'st of kings and queens拭
KING HENRY。 More than I seem察and less than I was born to此A man at
least察for less I should not be察And men may talk of kings察and why not I拭
SECOND KEEPER。
