apprehension that she had some knowledge of the place察 Vathek察 who察
finding himself that morning but ill at ease察 had gone forth before the
dawn察presented himself on a sudden to her view察motionless with surprise察
he durst not approach the figure before him察which lay shrouded up in a
simar察 extended on the ground察 trembling and pale察 but yet lovely to
behold。 At length Nouronihar察with a mixture of pleasure and affliction察
raising her fine eyes to him察said此 My lord察are you come hither to eat
rice and hear sermons with me拭─
;Beloved phantom ─ cried Vathek察 dost thou speak拭 hast thou the
same graceful form拭 the same radiant features拭 art thou palpable
likewise拭─ and察 eagerly embracing her察 added此 here are limbs and a
bosom animated with a gentle warmth what can such a prodigy mean拭─
Nouronihar with diffidence answered此 You know察 my lord察 that I
died on the night you honoured me with your visit察my cousin maintains it
was from one of your glances察 but I cannot believe him察for to me they
seem not so dreadful。 Gulchenrouz died with me察 and we were both
brought into a region of desolation察where we are fed with a wretched diet。
If you be dead also察and are come hither to join us察I pity your lot察for you
will be stunned with the noise of the dwarfs and the storks察besides察it is
mortifying in the extreme that you察as well as myself察should have lost the
treasures of the subterranean palace。;
At the mention of the subterranean palace the Caliph suspended his
caresses察 to seek from Nouronihar an explanation of her meaning。 She
then recapitulated her vision察what immediately followed察and the history

of her pretended death察adding also a description of the place of expiation
from whence she had fled察and all in a manner that would have extorted
his laughter察 had not the thoughts of Vathek been too deeply engaged。
No sooner察 however察 had she ended察 than he again clasped her to his
bosom察and said此
;Light of my eyes the mystery is unravelled察we both are alive your
father is a cheat察who察for the sake of dividing察hath deluded us both察and
the Giaour察whose design察as far as I can discover察is that we shall proceed
together察seems scarce a whit better察it shall be some time at least before
he find us in his palace of fire。 Your lovely little person in my estimation
is far more precious than all the treasures of the pre´adamite Sultans察and I
wish to possess it at pleasure察and in open day察for many a moon察before I
go to burrow underground like a mole。 Forget this little trifler察
Gulchenrouz察and;
;Ah my lord ─interposed Nouronihar察 let me entreat that you do him
no evil。;
;No察 no ─ replied Vathek察 I have already bid you forbear to alarm
yourself for him察he has been brought up too much on milk and sugar to
stimulate my jealousy察we will leave him with the dwarfs察who察by the bye察
are my old acquaintances察 their company will suit him far better than
yours。 As to other matters察I will return no more to your father's察I want
not to have my ears dinned by him and his dotards with the violation of
the rites of hospitality察as if it were less an honour for you to espouse the
sovereign of the world than a girl dressed up like a boy ─
Nouronihar could find nothing to oppose in a discourse so eloquent察
she only wished the amorous monarch had discovered more ardour for the
carbuncle of Giamschid察but flattered herself it would gradually increase察
and therefore yielded to his will with the most bewitching submission。
When the Caliph judged it proper察he called for Bababalouk察who was
asleep in the cave of Meimoune察 and dreaming that the phantom of
Nouronihar察having mounted him once more on her swing察had just given
him such a jerk察that he one moment soared above the mountains察and the
next sunk into the abyss察starting from his sleep at the voice of his master察
he ran gasping for breath察and had nearly fallen backward at the sight察as

he believed察of the spectre by whom he had so lately been haunted in his
dream。
;Ah察my lord ─cried he察recoiling ten steps察and covering his eyes with
both hands此 do you then perform the office of a Goul拭'tis true you have
dug up the dead察yet hope not to make her your prey察for after all she hath
caused me to suffer察she is even wicked enough to prey upon you。;
;Cease thy folly察─said Vathek察 and thou shalt soon be convinced that
it is Nouronihar herself察 alive and well察 whom I clasp to my breast察 go
only and pitch my tents in the neighbouring valley察 there will I fix my
abode with this beautiful tulip察 whose colours I soon shall restore察 there
exert thy best endeavours to procure whatever can augment the
enjoyments of life察till I shall disclose to thee more of my will。;
The news of so unlucky an event soon reached the ears of the Emir察
who abandoned himself to grief and despair察and began察as did all his old
grey´beards察to begrime his visage with ashes。 A total supineness ensued察
travellers were no longer entertained察no more plaisters were spread察and察
instead of the charitable activity that had distinguished this asylum察 the
whole of its inhabitants exhibited only faces of a half cubit long察 and
uttered groans that accorded with their forlorn situation
Though Fakreddin bewailed his daughter as lost to him for ever察 yet
Gulchenrouz was not forgotten。 He despatched immediate instruction to
Sutlememe察Shaban察and the dwarfs察enjoining them not to undeceive the
child in respect to his state察but察under some pretence察to convey him far
from the lofty rock at the extremity of the lake察to a place which he should
appoint察as safer from danger察for he suspected that Vathek intended him
evil。
Gulchenrouz in the meanwhile was filled with amazement at not
finding his cousin察 nor were the dwarfs at all less surprised察 but
Sutlememe察 who had more penetration察 immediately guessed what had
happened。 Gulchenrouz was amused with the delusive hope of once
more embracing Nouronihar in the interior recesses of the mountains察
where the ground察 strewed over with orange blossoms and jasmines察
offered beds much more inviting than the withered leaves in their cabin察
where they might accompany with their voices the sounds of their lutes察

and chase butterflies in concert。 Sutlememe was far gone in this sort of
description察when one of the four eunuchs beckoned her aside to apprise
her of the arrival of a messenger from their fraternity察who had explained
the secret of the flight of Nouronihar察and brought the commands of the
Emir。 A council with Shaban and the dwarfs was immediately held察their
baggage being stowed in consequence of it察they embarked in a shallop察
and quietly sailed with the little one察who acquiesced in all their proposals察
their voyage proceeded in the same manner till they came to the place
where the lake sinks beneath the hollow of the rock察 but as soon as the
bark had entered it察 and Gulchenrouz found himself surrounded with
darkness察 he was seized with a dreadful consternation察 and incessantly
uttered the most piercing outcries察 for he now was persuaded he should
actually be damned for having taken too much freedom in his life´time
with his cousin。
But let us return to the Caliph and her who ruled over his heart。
Bababalouk had pitched the tents察 and closed up the extremities of the
valley with magnificent screens of India cloth察 which were guarded by
Ethiopian slaves with their drawn sabres察to preserve the verdure of this
beautiful
