being a stranger to the path察she had not gone far till she began to repent of
her rashness。
;Alas ─ said she察 that I were but in those secure and illuminated
apartments where my evenings glided on with Gulchenrouz Dear child
how would thy heart flutter with terror wert thou wandering in these wild
solitudes like me ─ At the close of this apostrophe she regained her road察
and察coming to steps hewn out in the rock察ascended them undismayed察the
light察 which was now gradually enlarging察 appeared above her on the
summit of the mountain察 at length she distinguished a plaintive and
melodious union of voices察 proceeding from a sort of cavern察 that
resembled the dirges which are sung over tombs察a sound察likewise察like
that which arises from the filling of baths察at the same time struck her ear察

she continued ascending察 and discovered large wax torches in full blaze
planted here and there in the fissures of the rock察this preparation filled her
with fear察 whilst the subtle and potent odour which the torches exhaled
caused her to sink almost lifeless at the entrance of the grot。
Casting her eyes within in this kind of trance察 she beheld a large
cistern of gold filled with a water察 whose vapour distilled on her face a
dew of the essence of roses察a soft symphony resounded through the grot察
on the sides of the cistern she noticed appendages of royalty察diadems察and
feathers of the heron察 all sparkling with carbuncles察 whilst her attention
was fixed on this display of magnificence察the music ceased察and a voice
instantly demanded此
;For what monarch were these torches kindled察this bath prepared察and
these habiliments察which belong察not only to the sovereigns of the earth察
but even to the Talismanic Powers拭─
To which a second voice answered此 They are for the charming
daughter of the Emir Fakreddin。;
;What察─replied the first察 for that trifler察who consumes her time with
a giddy child察 immersed in softness察 and who at best can make but an
enervated husband拭─
;And can she察─rejoined the other voice察 be amused with such empty
trifles察whilst the Caliph察the sovereign of the world察he who is destined to
enjoy the treasures of the pre´adamite Sultans察a prince six feet high察and
whose eyes pervade the inmost soul of a female察is inflamed with the love
of her。 No she will be wise enough to answer that passion alone that can
aggrandise her glory察 no doubt she will察 and despise the puppet of her
fancy。 Then all the riches this place contains察as well as the carbuncle of
Giamschid察shall be hers。;
;You judge right察─ returned the first voice察 and I haste to Istakar to
prepare the palace of subterranean fire for the reception of the bridal pair。;
The voices ceased察 the torches were extinguished察 the most entire
darkness succeeded察and Nouronihar察recovering with a start察found herself
reclined on a sofa in the harem of her father。 She clapped her hands察and
immediately came together Gulchenrouz and her women察who察in despair
at having lost her察had despatched eunuchs to seek her in every direction察

Shaban appeared with the rest察and began to reprimand her with an air of
consequence此
;Little impertinent察─said he察 whence got you false keys拭or are you
beloved of some Genius that hath given you a pick´lock拭 I will try the
extent of your power察come察to your chamber through the two skylights察
and expect not the company of Gulchenrouz察be expeditious I will shut
you up in the double tower。;
At these menaces Nouronihar indignantly raised her head察opened on
Shaban her black eyes察 which察 since the important dialogue of the
enchanted grot察were considerably enlarged察and said此 Go察speak thus to
slaves察but learn to reverence her who is born to give laws察and subject all
to her power。;
She was proceeding in the same style察but was interrupted by a sudden
exclamation of ;The Caliph The Caliph ─ The curtains at once were
thrown open察 and the slaves prostrate in double rows察 whilst poor little
Gulchenrouz hid himself beneath the elevation of a sofa。 At first
appeared a file of black eunuchs察trailing after them long trains of muslin
embroidered with gold察 and holding in their hands censers察 which
dispensed as they passed the grateful perfume of the wood of aloes察next
marched Bababalouk with a solemn strut察and tossing his head as not over´
pleased at the visit察Vathek came close after察superbly robed察his gait was
unembarrassed and noble察 and his presence would have engaged
admiration察 though he had not been the sovereign of the world察 he
approached Nouronihar with a throbbing heart察and seemed enraptured at
the full effulgence of her radiant eyes察of which he had before caught but a
few glimpses察 but she instantly depressed them察 and her confusion
augmented her beauty。
Bababalouk察who was a thorough adept in coincidences of this nature察
and knew that the worst game should be played with the best face察
immediately made a signal for all to retire察and no sooner did he perceive
beneath the sofa the little one's feet察 than he drew him forth without
ceremony察set him upon his shoulders察and lavished on him as he went off
a thousand odious caresses察 Gulchenrouz cried out察 and resisted till his
cheeks became the colour of the blossom of the pomegranate察and the tears

that started into his eyes shot forth a gleam of indignation察 he cast a
significant glance at Nouronihar察which the Caliph noticing察asked此 Is that
then your Gulchenrouz拭─
;Sovereign of the world拭─ answered she察 spare my cousin察 whose
innocence and gentleness deserve not your anger。;
;Take comfort察─ said Vathek察 with a smile察 he is in good hands。
Bababalouk is fond of children察and never goes without sweetmeats and
comfits。;
The daughter of Fakreddin was abashed察and suffered Gulchenrouz to
be borne away without adding a word。 The tumult of her bosom betrayed
her confusion察and Vathek察becoming still more impassioned察gave a loose
to his frenzy察 which had only not subdued the last faint strugglings of
reluctance察when the Emir察suddenly bursting in察threw his face upon the
ground at the feet of the Caliph察and said此
;Commander of the Faithful abase not yourself to the meanness of
your slave。;
;No察Emir察─replied Vathek察 I raise her to an equality with myself察I
declare her my wife察 and the glory of your race shall extend from one
generation to another。;
;Alas my lord察─said Fakreddin察as he plucked off the honours of his
beard察 cut short the days of your faithful servant察rather than force him to
depart from his word。 Nouronihar察 as her hands evince察 is solemnly
promised to Gulchenrouz察 the son of my brother Ali Hassan察 they are
united also in heart察 their faith is mutually plighted察 and affiances so
sacred cannot be broken。;
;What then ─ replied the Caliph察 bluntly察 would you surrender this
divine beauty to a husband more womanish than herself拭 and can you
imagine that I will suffer her charms to decay in hands so inefficient and
nerveless拭 No she is destined to live out her life within my embraces此
such is my will察retire察and disturb not the time I devote to the homage of
her charms。;
The irritated Emir drew forth his sabre察 presented it to Vathek察 and
stretching out his neck察 said in a firm tone of voice此 Strike your
unhappy host察my lord he has lived long enough察since he hath seen the
