all come home察or ought to come home察for a short holidaythe longer察the

betterfrom the great boarding´school察where we are for ever working at

our arithmetical slates察 to take察 and give a rest。 As to going a visiting察

where can we not go察if we will察where have we not been察when we would察

starting our fancy from our Christmas Tree

Away into the winter prospect。 There are many such upon the tree

On察 by low´lying察 misty grounds察 through fens and fogs察 up long hills察

winding dark as caverns between thick plantations察almost shutting out the

sparkling stars察so察out on broad heights察until we stop at last察with sudden

silence察at an avenue。 The gate´bell has a deep察half´awful sound in the

frosty air察 the gate swings open on its hinges察 and察 as we drive up to a

great house察 the glancing lights grow larger in the windows察 and the

opposing rows of trees seem to fall solemnly back on either side察to give

us place。 At intervals察 all day察 a frightened hare has shot across this

whitened turf察or the distant clatter of a herd of deer trampling the hard

frost察has察for the minute察crushed the silence too。 Their watchful eyes

beneath the fern may be shining now察if we could see them察like the icy

dewdrops on the leaves察 but they are still察 and all is still。 And so察 the

lights growing larger察and the trees falling back before us察and closing up

again behind us察as if to forbid retreat察we come to the house。

There is probably a smell of roasted chestnuts and other good

comfortable things all the time察for we are telling Winter Stories Ghost

Stories察 or more shame for usround the Christmas fire察 and we have

never stirred察except to draw a little nearer to it。 But察no matter for that。

We came to the house察and it is an old house察full of great chimneys where

wood is burnt on ancient dogs upon the hearth察and grim portraits some of

them with grim legends察too lower distrustfully from the oaken panels of

the walls。 We are a middle´aged nobleman察 and we make a generous

supper with our host and hostess and their guestsit being Christmas´time察

and the old house full of companyand then we go to bed。 Our room is a

very old room。 It is hung with tapestry。 We don't like the portrait of a

cavalier in green察over the fireplace。 There are great black beams in the

                                                 11

ceiling察and there is a great black bedstead察supported at the foot by two

great black figures察who seem to have come off a couple of tombs in the

old baronial church in the park察for our particular accommodation。 But察

we are not a superstitious nobleman察 and we don't mind。 Well we

dismiss our servant察lock the door察and sit before the fire in our dressing´

gown察musing about a great many things。 At length we go to bed。 Well

we can't sleep。 We toss and tumble察and can't sleep。 The embers on the

hearth burn fitfully and make the room look ghostly。 We can't help

peeping out over the counterpane察 at the two black figures and the

cavalierthat wicked´ looking cavalierin green。 In the flickering light

they seem to advance and retire此 which察though we are not by any means

a superstitious nobleman察is not agreeable。 Well we get nervous more

and more nervous。 We say ;This is very foolish察but we can't stand this察

we'll pretend to be ill察and knock up somebody。; Well we are just going

to do it察when the locked door opens察and there comes in a young woman察

deadly pale察and with long fair hair察who glides to the fire察and sits down

in the chair we have left there察wringing her hands。 Then察we notice that

her clothes are wet。 Our tongue cleaves to the roof of our mouth察and we

can't speak察but察we observe her accurately。 Her clothes are wet察her long

hair is dabbled with moist mud察 she is dressed in the fashion of two

hundred years ago察and she has at her girdle a bunch of rusty keys。 Well

there she sits察 and we can't even faint察 we are in such a state about it。

Presently she gets up察 and tries all the locks in the room with the rusty

keys察which won't fit one of them察then察she fixes her eyes on the portrait

of the cavalier in green察and says察in a low察terrible voice察 The stags know

it ─ After that察she wrings her hands again察passes the bedside察and goes

out at the door。 We hurry on our dressing´gown察seize our pistols we

always travel with pistols察 and are following察 when we find the door

locked。 We turn the key察 look out into the dark gallery察 no one there。

We wander away察and try to find our servant。 Can't be done。 We pace the

gallery till daybreak察then return to our deserted room察fall asleep察and are

awakened by our servant nothing ever haunts him and the shining sun。

Well we make a wretched breakfast察 and all the company say we look

queer。 After breakfast察we go over the house with our host察and then we

take him to the portrait of the cavalier in green察and then it all comes out。

He was false to a young housekeeper once attached to that family察 and

famous for her beauty察who drowned herself in a pond察and whose body

was discovered察after a long time察because the stags refused to drink of the

water。 Since which察it has been whispered that she traverses the house at

midnight but goes especially to that room where the cavalier in green was

wont to sleep察trying the old locks with the rusty keys。 Well we tell our

host of what we have seen察and a shade comes over his features察and he

begs it may be hushed up察and so it is。 But察it's all true察and we said so察

before we died we are dead now to many responsible people。

There is no end to the old houses察 with resounding galleries察 and

dismal state´bedchambers察 and haunted wings shut up for many years察

through which we may ramble察with an agreeable creeping up our back察

and encounter any number of ghosts察but it is worthy of remark perhaps

reducible to a very few general types and classes察 for察 ghosts have little

originality察and ;walk; in a beaten track。 Thus察it comes to pass察that a

certain room in a certain old hall察where a certain bad lord察baronet察knight察

or gentleman察shot himself察has certain planks in the floor from which the

blood WILL NOT be taken out。 You may scrape and scrape察 as the

present owner has done察or plane and plane察as his father did察or scrub and

scrub察as his grandfather did察or burn and burn with strong acids察 as his

great´ grandfather did察but察there the blood will still beno redder and no

palerno more and no lessalways just the same。 Thus察in such another

house there is a haunted door察that never will keep open察or another door

that never will keep shut察 or a haunted sound of a spinning´wheel察 or a

hammer察or a footstep察or a cry察or a sigh察or a horse's tramp察or the rattling

of a chain。 Or else察there is a turret´clock察which察at the midnight hour察

strikes thirteen when the head of the family is going to die察or a shadowy察

immovable black carriage which at such a time is always seen by

somebody察 waiting near the great gates in the stable´yard。 Or thus察 it

came to pass how Lady Mary went to pay a visit at a large wild house in

the Scottish Highlands察and察being fatigued with her long journey察retired

to bed early察 and innocently said察 next morning察 at the breakfast´table察

;How odd察to have so late a party last night察in this remote place察and not
