ve察 It were no blessing thus obtain'd察 Thou rather would'st a curse have gain'd察Then let thy warm driven snow be ever stain'd。
II。 Not that you feared the discolo'ring cold Might alchymize their silver into gold察 Nor could your ten white nuns so sin察 That you should thus pennance them in察Each in her coarse hair smock of discipline。
III。 Nor察Hero´like who察on their crest still wore A lyon察panther察leopard察or a bore察 To looke their enemies in their herse察 Thou would'st thy hand should deeper pierce察And察in its softness rough察appear more fierce。
IV。 No察no察LUCASTA察destiny decreed察That beasts to thee a sacrifice should bleed察 And strip themselves to make you gay此 For ne'r yet herald did display A coat察where SABLES upon ERMIN lay。
V。 This for lay´lovers察that must stand at dore察Salute the threshold察and admire no more察 But I察in my invention tough察 Rate not this outward bliss enough察But still contemplate must the hidden muffe。
A BLACK PATCH ON LUCASTA'S FACE。
Dull as I was察to think that a court fly Presum'd so neer her eye察 When 'twas th' industrious bee Mistook her glorious face for paradise察To summe up all his chymistry of spice察 With a brave pride and honour led察 Neer both her suns he makes his bed察And察though a spark察struggles to rise as red。 Then aemulates the gay Daughter of day察 Acts the romantick phoenix' fate察 When now察with all his sweets lay'd out in state察 LUCASTA scatters but one heat察And all the aromatick pills do sweat察And gums calcin'd themselves to powder beat察 Which a fresh gale of air Conveys into her hair察 Then chaft察he's set on fire察And in these holy flames doth glad expire察 And that black marble tablet there So neer her either sphere Was plac'd察nor foyl察nor ornament察But the sweet little bee's large monument。
The following is a poet's lecture to the ladies of his time on the long prevailing practice of wearing patches察in which it seems that Lucasta acquiesced
BLACK PATCHES。 VANITAS VANITATUM。 LADIES turn conjurers察and can impart The hidden mystery of the black art察 Black artificial patches do betray察 They more affect the works of night than day。 The creature strives the Creator to disgrace察 By patching that which is a perfect face此 A little stain upon the purest dye Is both offensive to the heart and eye。 Defile not then with spots that face of snow察 Where the wise God His workmanship doth show察 The light of nature and the light of grace Is the complexion for a lady's face。 FLAMMA SINE FUMO察by R。 Watkyns察1662察p。 81。
In a poem entitled THE BURSSE OF REFORMATION察in praise of the New Exchange察printed in WIT RESTORED察1658察patches are enumerated among the wares of all sorts to be procured there
;Heer patches are of every cut察 For pimples and for scars。;
They were also used for rheum察as appears from a passage in WESTWARD HOE察1607
;JUDITH。 I am so troubled with the rheum too。 Mouse察what's good for it拭 HONEY。 How often I have told you you must get a patch。; Webster's WORKS察ed。 Hazlitt察i。 87。 See Durfey's PILLS TO PURGE MELANCHOLY察v。 197。
;Mrs。 Pepys wore patches察and so did my Lady Sandwich and her daughter。;DIARY察30 Aug。 and 20 Oct。 1660。
ANOTHER。
I。 As I beheld a winter's evening air察Curl'd in her court´false´locks of living hair察Butter'd with jessamine the sun left there。
II。 Galliard and clinquant she appear'd to give察A serenade or ball to us that grieve察And teach us A LA MODE more gently live。
III。 But as a Moor察who to her cheeks prefers White spots察t' allure her black idolaters察Me thought she look'd all ore´bepatch'd with stars。
IV。 Like the dark front of some Ethiopian queen察Vailed all ore with gems of red察blew察green察Whose ugly night seem'd masked with days skreen。
V。 Whilst the fond people offer'd sacrifice To saphyrs察'stead of veins and arteries察And bow'd unto the diamonds察not her eyes。
VI。 Behold LUCASTA'S face察how't glows like noon A sun intire is her complexion察And form'd of one whole constellation。
VII。 So gently shining察so serene察so cleer察Her look doth universal Nature cheer察Only a cloud or two hangs here and there。
TO LUCASTA。
I。 I laugh and sing察but cannot tell Whether the folly on't sounds well察 But then I groan察 Methinks察in tune察Whilst grief察despair and fear dance to the air Of my despised prayer。
II。 A pretty antick love does this察 Then strikes a galliard with a kiss察 As in the end The chords they rend察So you but with a touch from your fair hand Turn all to saraband。
TO LUCASTA。
I。 Like to the sent'nel stars察I watch all night察 For still the grand round of your light And glorious breast Awake in me an east此Nor will my rolling eyes ere know a west。
II。 Now on my down I'm toss'd as on a wave察 And my repose is made my grave察 Fluttering I lye察 Do beat my self and dye察But for a resurrection from your eye。
III。 Ah察my fair murdresse dost thou cruelly heal With various pains to make me well拭 Then let me be Thy cut anatomie察And in each mangled part my heart you'l see。

LUCASTA AT THE BATH。
I。 I' th' autumn of a summer's day察When all the winds got leave to play察LUCASTA察that fair ship察is lanch'd察And from its crust this almond blanch'd。
II。 Blow then察unruly northwind察blow察'Till in their holds your eyes you stow察And swell your cheeks察bequeath chill death察See she hath smil'd thee out of breath。
III。 Court察gentle zephyr察court and fan Her softer breast's carnation wan察Your charming rhethorick of down Flyes scatter'd from before her frown。
IV。 Say察my white water´lilly察say察How is't those warm streams break away察Cut by thy chast cold breast察which dwells Amidst them arm'd in isicles
V。 And the hot floods察more raging grown察In flames of thee then in their own察In their distempers wildly glow察And kisse thy pillar of fix'd snow。
VI。 No sulphur察through whose each blew vein The thick and lazy currents strein察Can cure the smarting nor the fell Blisters of love察wherewith they swell。
VII。 These great physicians of the blind察The lame察and fatal blains of Inde In every drop themselves now see Speckled with a new leprosie。
VIII。 As sick drinks are with old wine dash'd察Foul waters too with spirits wash'd察Thou greiv'd察perchance察one tear let'st fall察Which straight did purifie them all。
IX。 And now is cleans'd enough the flood察Which since runs cleare as doth thy blood察Of the wet pearls uncrown thy hair察And mantle thee with ermin air。
X。 Lucasta察hail fair conqueresse Of fire察air察earth and seas Thou whom all kneel to察yet even thou Wilt unto love察thy captive察bow。
THE ANT。
I。 Forbear察thou great good husband察little ant察 A little respite from thy flood of sweat Thou察thine own horse and cart under this plant察 Thy spacious tent察fan thy prodigious heat察Down with thy double load of that one grain It is a granarie for all thy train。
II。 Cease察large example of wise thrift察awhile For thy example is become our law察And teach thy frowns a seasonable smile此 So Cato sometimes the nak'd Florals saw。 And thou察almighty foe察lay by thy sting察Whilst thy unpay'd musicians察crickets察sing。
III。 LUCASTA察she that holy makes the day察 And 'stills new life in fields of fueillemort察Hath back restor'd their verdure with one ray察 And with her eye bid all to play and sport察Ant察to work still age will thee truant call察And to save now察th'art worse than prodigal。
IV。 Austere and cynick not one hour t' allow察 To lose with pleasure察what thou gotst with pain察But drive on sacred festivals thy plow察 Tearing high´ways with thy ore´charged wain。 Not all thy life´time one poor minute live察And thy ore´labour'd bulk with mirth relieve
V。 Look up then察miserable ant察and spie Thy fatal foes察for breaking of their law察Hov'ring above thee此Madam MARGARET PIE此 And her fierce servant察meagre Sir JOHN DAW此Thy self and storehouse now they do store up察And thy whole harvest too within their crop。
VI。 Thus we unthrifty thrive within earth's tomb For some more rav'n
