On the Post察 or on the Steps拭 Dear察 dear察 how grand we are。 Two

'The steps to´day察my Pet' said Trotty。 'Steps in dry weather。 Post in

wet。 There's a greater conveniency in the steps at all times察because of

the sitting down察but they're rheumatic in the damp。'

'Then here' said Meg察 clapping her hands察 after a moment's bustle察

'here it is察all ready And beautiful it looks Come察father。 Come'

Since his discovery of the contents of the basket察 Trotty had been

standing looking at her ´ and had been speaking too ´ in an abstracted

manner察which showed that though she was the object of his thoughts and

eyes察to the exclusion even of tripe察he neither saw nor thought about her

as she was at that moment察 but had before him some imaginary rough

sketch or drama of her future life。 Roused察now察by her cheerful summons察

he shook off a melancholy shake of the head which was just coming upon

him察and trotted to her side。 As he was stooping to sit down察the Chimes

rang。

'Amen' said Trotty察pulling off his hat and looking up towards them。

'Amen to the Bells察father' cried Meg。

'They broke in like a grace察 my dear' said Trotty察 taking his seat。

'They'd say a good one察I am sure察if they could。 Many's the kind thing

they say to me。'

'The Bells do察father' laughed Meg察as she set the basin察and a knife

and fork察before him。 'Well'

'Seem to察 my Pet' said Trotty察 falling to with great vigour。 'And

where's the difference拭 If I hear 'em察 what does it matter whether they

speak it or not拭 Why bless you察 my dear' said Toby察 pointing at the

tower with his fork察and becoming more animated under the influence of

dinner察'how often have I heard them bells say察 Toby Veck察Toby Veck察

     'Well察I never' cried Meg。

She had察 though ´ over and over again。 For it was Toby's constant

topic。

'When things is very bad' said Trotty察'very bad indeed察I mean察almost

at the worst察 then it's ;Toby Veck察 Toby Veck察 job coming soon察 Toby

Toby Veck察Toby Veck察job coming soon察Toby ─ That way。'

'And it comes ´ at last察father' said Meg察with a touch of sadness in her

pleasant voice。

'Always' answered the unconscious Toby。 'Never fails。'

While this discourse was holding察Trotty made no pause in his attack

upon the savoury meat before him察but cut and ate察and cut and drank察and

cut and chewed察and dodged about察from tripe to hot potato察and from hot

potato back again to tripe察with an unctuous and unflagging relish。 But

happening now to look all round the street ´ in case anybody should be

beckoning from any door or window察 for a porter ´ his eyes察 in coming

back again察 encountered Meg此 sitting opposite to him察 with her arms

                                                12

folded and only busy in watching his progress with a smile of happiness。

'Why察Lord forgive me' said Trotty察dropping his knife and fork。 'My

dove Meg why didn't you tell me what a beast I was'

     'Father'

'Sitting here' said Trotty察 in penitent explanation察 'cramming察 and

stuffing察and gorging myself察and you before me there察never so much as

breaking your precious fast察nor wanting to察when ´ '

'But I have broken it察father' interposed his daughter察laughing察'all to

bits。 I have had my dinner。'

'Nonsense' said Trotty。 'Two dinners in one day It an't possible

You might as well tell me that two New Year's Days will come together察or

that I have had a gold head all my life察and never changed it。'

'I have had my dinner察father察for all that' said Meg察coming nearer to

him。 'And if you'll go on with yours察 I'll tell you how and where察 and

how your dinner came to be brought察and ´ and something else besides。'

Toby still appeared incredulous察but she looked into his face with her

clear eyes察and laying her hand upon his shoulder察motioned him to go on

while the meat was hot。 So Trotty took up his knife and fork again察and

went to work。 But much more slowly than before察and shaking his head察

as if he were not at all pleased with himself。

'I had my dinner察father' said Meg察after a little hesitation察'with ´ with

Richard。 His dinner´time was early察 and as he brought his dinner with

him when he came to see me察we ´ we had it together察father。'

Trotty took a little beer察and smacked his lips。 Then he said察'Oh' ´

because she waited。

     'And Richard says察father ´ ' Meg resumed。 Then stopped。

'What does Richard say察Meg' asked Toby。

     'Richard says察father ´ ' Another stoppage。

'Richard's a long time saying it' said Toby。

'He says then察father' Meg continued察lifting up her eyes at last察and

speaking in a tremble察but quite plainly察'another year is nearly gone察and

where is the use of waiting on from year to year察when it is so unlikely we

shall ever be better off than we are now拭He says we are poor now察father察

and we shall be poor then察but we are young now察and years will make us

                                               13

old before we know it。 He says that if we wait此 people in our condition此

until we see our way quite clearly察the way will be a narrow one indeed ´

the common way ´ the Grave察father。'

A bolder man than Trotty Veck must needs have drawn upon his

boldness largely察to deny it。 Trotty held his peace。

'And how hard察father察to grow old察and die察and think we might have

cheered and helped each other How hard in all our lives to love each

other察and to grieve察apart察to see each other working察changing察growing

old and grey。 Even if I got the better of it察and forgot him which I never

could察oh father dear察how hard to have a heart so full as mine is now察and

live to have it slowly drained out every drop察without the recollection of

one happy moment of a woman's life察to stay behind and comfort me察and

make me better'

Trotty sat quite still。 Meg dried her eyes察and said more gaily此that is

to say察 with here a laugh察 and there a sob察 and here a laugh and sob

together此

'So Richard says察father察as his work was yesterday made certain for

some time to come察and as I love him察and have loved him full three years

´ ah longer than that察if he knew it will I marry him on New Year's Day察

the best and happiest day察 he says察 in the whole year察 and one that is

almost sure to bring good fortune with it。 It's a short notice察father ´ isn't

it拭 but I haven't my fortune to be settled察or my wedding dresses to be

made察like the great ladies察father察have I拭 And he said so much察and said

it in his way察so strong and earnest察and all the time so kind and gentle察

that I said I'd come and talk to you察father。 And as they paid the money

for that work of mine this morning unexpectedly察I am sure。 and as you

have fared very poorly for a whole week察and as I couldn't help wishing

there should be something to make this day a sort of holiday to you as well

as a dear and happy day to me察father察I made a little treat and brought it to

surprise you。'

'And see how he leaves it cooling on the step' said another voice。

It was the voice of this same Richard察 who had come upon them

unobserved察and stood before the father and daughter察looking down upon

them with a face as glowing as the iron on which his stout sledge´hammer
