not even Louisa seemed to feel that they had parted with Captain

Wentworth long察 when they saw him coming after them察 with

three companions察 all well known already察 by description察 to be

Captain and Mrs。 Harville察 and a Captain Benwick察 who was

staying with them。

Captain Benwick had some time ago been first lieutenant of the

Laconia察and the account which Captain Wentworth had given of

him察on his return from Lyme before察his warm praise of him as an

excellent young man and an officer察whom he had always valued

highly察which must have stamped him well in the esteem of every

listener察 had been followed by a little history of his private life察

which rendered him perfectly interesting in the eyes of all the

ladies。 He had been engaged to Captain Harville¨s sister察and was

now mourning her loss。 They had been a year or two waiting for

fortune and promotion。 Fortune came察 his prize´money as

lieutenant being great察promotion察 too察 came at last察 but Fanny

Harville did not live to know it。 She had died the preceding

summer while he was at sea。 Captain Wentworth believed it

impossible for man to be more attached to woman than poor

Benwick had been to Fanny Harville察 or to be more deeply

the story察the friendship between him and the Harvilles seemed察if

possible察 augmented by the event which closed all their views of

alliance察and Captain Benwick was now living with them entirely。

Captain Harville had taken his present house for half a year察 his

taste察 and his health察 and his fortune察 all directing him to a

residence inexpensive察 and by the sea察 and the grandeur of the

country察 and the retirement of Lyme in the winter察 appeared

exactly adapted to Captain Benwick¨s state of mind。 The sympathy

and good´will excited towards Captain Benwick was very great。

^And yet察院said Anne to herself察as they now moved forward to

meet the party察 he has not察perhaps察a more sorrowing heart than

I have。 I cannot believe his prospects so blighted for ever。 He is

younger than I am察younger in feeling察if not in fact察younger as a

man。 He will rally again察and be happy with another。 ̄

They all met察and were introduced。 Captain Harville was a tall察

dark man察with a sensible察benevolent countenance察a little lame察

and from strong features and want of health察looking much older

than Captain Wentworth。 Captain Benwick looked察 and was察 the

youngest of the three察and察compared with either of them察a little

man。 He had a pleasing face and a melancholy air察just as he ought

to have察and drew back from conversation。

Captain Harville察 though not equalling Captain Wentworth in

manners察 was a perfect gentleman察 unaffected察 warm察 and

obliging。 Mrs。 Harville察 a degree less polished than her husband察

seemed察 however察 to have the same good feelings察 and nothing

could be more pleasant than their desire of considering the whole

party as friends of their own察 because the friends of Captain

Wentworth察 or more kindly hospitable than their entreaties for

their all promising to dine with them。 The dinner察already ordered

at the inn察 was at last察 though unwillingly察 accepted as a excuse察

but they seemed almost hurt that Captain Wentworth should have

brought any such party to Lyme察without considering it as a thing

of course that they should dine with them。

There was so much attachment to Captain Wentworth in all

this察 and such a bewitching charm in a degree of hospitality so

uncommon察so unlike the usual style of give´and´take invitations察

and dinners of formality and display察that Anne felt her spirits not

likely to be benefited by an increasing acquaintance among his

brother´officers。 ^These would have been all my friends察院was her

thought察 and she had to struggle against a great tendency to

lowness。

On quitting the Cobb察 they all went indoors with their new

friends察 and found rooms so small as none but those who invite

from the heart could think capable of accommodating so many。

Anne had a moment¨s astonishment on the subject herself察but it

was soon lost in the pleasanter feelings which sprang from the
