consequence that he should know his own mind early enough not

to be endangering the happiness of either sister察or impeaching his

own honour察 than that he should prefer Henrietta to Louisa察 or

Louisa to Henrietta。 Either of them would察in all probability察make

him an affectionate察good´humoured wife。 With regard to Charles

Hayter察she had delicacy which must be pained by any lightness of

conduct in a well´meaning young woman察 and a heart to

sympathize in any of the sufferings it occasioned察but if Henrietta

found herself mistaken in the nature of her feelings察the alteration

could not be understood too soon。

Charles Hayter had met with much to disquiet and mortify him

in his cousin¨s behaviour。 She had too old a regard for him to be so

wholly estranged as might in two meetings extinguish every past

hope察 and leave him nothing to do but to keep away from

Uppercross察 but there was such a change as became very

alarming察 when such a man as Captain Wentworth was to be

regarded as the probable cause。 He had been absent only two

Sundays察 and when they parted察 had left her interested察 even to

then seemed the object nearest her heart察 that Dr。 Shirley察 the

rector察 who for more than forty years had been zealously

discharging all the duties of his office察 but was now growing too

Shirley¨s being relieved from the duty which he could no longer

even to Louisa察 but had been almost every thing to Henrietta。

When he came back察 alas the zeal of the business was gone by。

Louisa could not listen at all to his account of a conversation

which he had just held with Dr。 Shirley此 she was at a window察

She was obliged to kneel down by the sofa察and remain there to

to her very great satisfaction察 she heard some other person

crossing the little vestibule。 She hoped察on turning her head察to see

the master of the house察 but it proved to be one much less

calculated for making matters easy!Charles Hayter察probably not

at all better pleased by the sight of Captain Wentworth than

Captain Wentworth had been by the sight of Anne。

She only attempted to say察 How do you do拭 Will you not sit

Captain Wentworth察 however察 came from his window察

soon put an end to his attempts by seating himself near the table察

Another minute brought another addition。 The younger boy察a

There being nothing to eat察he could only have some play察and

as his aunt would not let him tease his sick brother察 he began to

fasten himself upon her察as she knelt察in such a way that察busy as

she was about Charles察she could not shake him off。 She spoke to
