^Pretty well察ma¨am察in the fifteen years of my marriage察though

many women have done more。 I have crossed the Atlantic four

Mrs。 Musgrove had not a word to say in dissent察she could not

accuse herself of having ever called them anything in the whole

The evening ended with dancing。 On its being proposed察Anne

to be unobserved。

It was a merry察 joyous party察 and no one seemed in higher

especially the attention of all the young women察 could do。 The

Miss Hayters察 the females of the family of cousins already

so entirely occupied by him察 that nothing but the continued

appearance of the most perfect good´will between themselves

could wonder拭

These were some of the thoughts which occupied Anne察 while

her fingers were mechanically at work察 proceeding for half an

whether Miss Elliot never danced拭 The answer was察 Oh察 no察

never察she has quite given up dancing。 She had rather play。 She is

never tired of playing。 ̄ Once察too察he spoke to her。 She had left the

instrument on the dancing being over察and he had sat down to try

to make out an air which he wished to give the Miss Musgroves an

idea of。 Unintentionally she returned to that part of the room察he

saw her察and察instantly rising察said察with studied politeness察

^I beg your pardon察madam察this is your seat察院and though she

immediately drew back with a decided negative察he was not to be

induced to sit down again。

Anne did not wish for more of such looks and speeches。 His

cold politeness察his ceremonious grace察were worse than any thing。

                              CHAPTER IX

aptain Wentworth was come to Kellynch as to a home察to

stay as long as he liked察being as thoroughly the object of

 C

the Admiral¨s fraternal kindness as of his wife¨s。 He had

intended察on first arriving察to proceed very soon into Shropshire察

and visit the brother settled in that country察but the attractions of

Uppercross induced him to put this off。 There was so much of

friendliness察and of flattery察and of everything most bewitching in

his reception there察 the old were so hospitable察 the young so

agreeable察that he could not but resolve to remain where he was察

and take all the charms and perfections of Edward¨s wife upon

credit a little longer。

It was soon Uppercross with him almost every day。 The

Musgroves could hardly be more ready to invite than he to come察

particularly in the morning察when he had no companion at home察

for the Admiral and Mrs。 Croft were generally out of doors

together察 interesting themselves in their new possessions察 their

grass察and their sheep察and dawdling about in a way not endurable

to a third person察 or driving out in a gig察 lately added to their

establishment。

Hitherto there had been but one opinion of Captain Wentworth

among the Musgroves and their dependencies。 It was unvarying察

warm admiration everywhere察 but this intimate footing was not

more than established察 when a certain Charles Hayter returned

among them察 to be a good deal disturbed by it察 and to think

Captain Wentworth very much in the way。

Charles Hayter was the eldest of all the cousins察 and a very

amiable察pleasing young man察between whom and Henrietta there

had been a considerable appearance of attachment previous to

Captain Wentworth¨s introduction。 He was in orders察and having a

curacy in the neighbourhood察 where residence was not required察

lived at his father¨s house察 only two miles from Uppercross。 A

short absence from home had left his fair one unguarded by his

attentions at this critical period察 and when he came back he had

the pain of finding very altered manners察 and of seeing Captain

Wentworth。
