I must guard her from all sorrow察I must play a brother's part察Shield

all grief and trial from her察If it need be察with my heart。 Years passed察and

his letters察While the slow days fleeted by。

Then at lastyou know the story察How a fearful rumour spread察Till all

hope had slowly faded察And we heard that he was dead。 Dead Oh察those

And I bade him claim his own。

thank God that bright morning察When I felt my Brother's gaze察That my

heart was true and loyal察As in our old boyish days。

Bought by wounds and deeds of daring察Honours he had brought away察

Glory crowned his namemy Brother's察Mine toowe were one that day。

Since the crown on him had fallen察 VICTOR IN A NOBLE STRIFE察─I

could live and die contented With my poor ignoble life。

Well察my darling察almost weary Of my story拭 Wait awhile察For the

rest is only joyful察I can tell it with a smile。 One bright promise still was

left me察Wound so close about my soul察That察as one by one had failed me察

This dream now absorbed the whole。

;SINGER OF A NOBLE POEM察─ Ah察my darling察few and rare Burn

the glorious names of Poets察Like stars in the purple air。 That too察and I

glory in it察 That great gift my Godfrey won察 I have my dear share of

honour察Gained by that beloved one。

One day shall my darling read it察Now she cannot understand All the

noble thoughts察that lighten Through the genius of the land。 I am proud to

be his brother察 Proud to think that hope was true察 Though I longed and

strove so vainly察What I failed in察he could do。

I was long before I knew it察Longer ere I felt it so察Then I strung my

rhymes together Only for the poor and low。 And察it pleases me to know it察

For I love them well indeed撮 They care for my humble verses察Fitted for

their humble need。

And察it cheers my heart to bear it察Where the far´off settlers roam察My

poor words are sung and cherished察Just because they speak of Home。 And

the little children sing them察。That察I think察has pleased me best撮 Often察

too察the dying love them察For they tell of Heaven and rest。

So my last vain dream has faded察。Such as I to think of fame。 Yet I

will not say it failed me察 For it crowned my Godfrey's name。 No察 my

Angel did not cheat me察For my long life HAS been blest察He did give me

Love and Sorrow察He will bring me Light and Rest。
