            VERSE此 THE UNKNOWN

                                 GRAVE

No name to bid us know Who rests below察No word of death or birth察

Only the grass's wave察Over a mound of earth察Over a nameless grave。

Did this poor wandering heart In pain depart拭Longing察but all too late察

For the calm home again察Where patient watchers wait察And still will wait

in vain。

Did mourners come in scorn察And thus forlorn察Leave him察with grief

and shame。 To silence and decay察 And hide the tarnished name Of the

unconscious clay拭

It may be from his side His loved ones died察And last of some bright

band察 。Together now once more撮 He sought his home察 the land Where

they had gone before。

No matterlimes have made As cool a shade察And lingering breezes

pass As tenderly and slow察As if beneath the grass A monarch slept below。

No grief察though loud and deep察Could stir that sleep察And earth and

heaven tell Of rest that shall not cease察Where the cold world's farewell

Fades into endless peace。

     VERSE此 GIVE ME THY HEART

With echoing steps the worshippers Departed one by one察The organ's

pealing voice was stilled察The vesper hymn was done察The shadows fell

from roof and arch察 Dim was the incensed air察 One lamp alone with

trembling ray察Told of the Presence there

In the dark church she knelt alone察Her tears were falling fast察 Help察

Lord察─she cried察 the shades of death Upon my soul are cast Have I not

shunned the path of sin察And chosen the better part拭─What voice came

through the sacred air拭 ;My child察give me thy Heart ─

;Have I not laid before Thy shrine My wealth察 oh Lord拭─ she cried察

;Have I kept aught of gems or gold察To minister to pride拭Have I not bade

youth's joys retire察And vain delights depart拭─ But sad and tender was the

voice ´ ;My child察give me thy Heart ─

;Have I not察Lord察gone day by day Where Thy poor children dwell察

And carried help察 and gold察 and food拭 Oh Lord察 Thou knowest it well

From many a house察from many a soul察My hand bids care depart此─ More

sad察more tender察was the voice ´ ;My child察give me thy Heart ─

;Have I not worn my strength away With fast and penance sore拭Have

I not watched and wept拭─she cried察 Did Thy dear Saints do more拭Have I

not gained Thy grace察oh Lord察And won in Heaven my part拭─ It echoed

louder in her soul ´ ;My child察give me thy Heart ─

;For I have loved thee with a love No mortal heart can show察A love so

deep察my Saints in heaven Its depths can never know此When pierced and

wounded on the Cross察Man's sin and doom were mine察I loved thee with

undying love察Immortal and divine

offerings察vain thy sighs察Without one gift divine察Give it察my child察 thy

Heart to me察And it shall rest in mine ─

In awe she listened察and the shade Passed from her soul away察In low

and trembling voice she cried ´ ;Lord察help me to obey Break Thou the

         VERSE此 THE WAYSIDE INN

A little past the village The Inn stood察 low and white察 Green shady

trees behind it察And an orchard on the right察Where over the green paling

The red´cheeked apples hung察As if to watch how wearily The sign´board

creaked and swung。

The heavy´laden branches察Over the road hung low察Reflected fruit or

blossom From the wayside well below察 Where children察 drawing water察

Looked up and paused to see察Amid the apple´branches察A purple Judas

Tree。

The road stretched winding onward For many a weary mile ´ So dusty

foot´sore wanderers Would pause and rest awhile察 And panting horses

halted察 And travellers loved to tell The quiet of the wayside inn察 The

orchard察and the well。

Here Maurice dwelt察and often The sunburnt boy would stand Gazing

upon the distance察And shading with his hand His eyes察 while watching

vainly For travellers察who might need His aid to loose the bridle察And tend

the weary steed。

And once the boy remembered That morning察many a day ´ The dew

lay on the hawthorn察 The bird sang on the spray A train of horsemen察

nobler Than he had seen before察 Up from the distance galloped察 And

halted at the door。

Upon a milk´white pony察Fit for a faery queen察Was the loveliest little

damsel His eyes had ever seen此A serving´man was holding The leading

rein察to guide The pony and its mistress察Who cantered by his side。

Her sunny ringlets round her A golden cloud had made察 While her

large hat was keeping Her calm blue eyes in shade察One hand held fast the

silken reins To keep her steed in check察The other pulled his tangled mane察

Or stroked his glossy neck。

And as the boy brought water察 And loosed the rein察 he heard The

sweetest voice that thanked him In one low gentle word察She turned her

blue eyes from him察 Looked up察 and smiled to see The hanging purple

blossoms Upon the Judas Tree察

And showed it with a gesture察 Half pleading察 half command察Till he

broke the fairest blossom察And laid it in her hand察And she tied it to her

saddle With a ribbon from her hair察While her happy laugh rang gaily察Like

silver on the air。

But the champing steeds were rested ´ The horsemen now spurred on察

And down the dusty highway They vanished and were gone。 Years passed察

and many a traveller Paused at the old inn´door察But the little milk´white

pony And the child returned no more。

Years passed察the apple´branches A deeper shadow shed察And many a

time the Judas Tree察 Blossom and leaf察 lay dead察 When on the loitering

western breeze Came the bells' merry sound察And flowery arches rose察and

flags And banners waved around。

Maurice stood there expectant此 The bridal train would stay Some

eyes looked round察 Unconscious of the place察 Unconscious of the eager

He plucked a blossom from the tree ´ The Judas Treeand cast Its

purple fragrance towards the Bride察A message from the Past。 The signal

came察 the horses plunged ´ Once more she smiled around此 The purple

blossom in the dust Lay trampled on the ground。

Again the slow years fleeted察Their passage only known By the height

the Passion´flower Around the porch had grown察 And many a passing

traveller Paused at the old inn´door察But the bride察so fair and blooming察

The bride returned no more。
