oft In mighty war察whenas the legion's length Deploys its cohorts察and the

column stands In open plain察the ranks of battle set察And far and near with

rippling sheen of arms The wide earth flickers察nor yet in grisly strife Foe

grapples foe察but dubious 'twixt the hosts The war´god wavers察so let all be

ranged In equal rows symmetric察not alone To feed an idle fancy with the

view察But since not otherwise will earth afford Vigour to all alike察nor yet

the boughs Have power to stretch them into open space。 Shouldst haply

of the furrow's depth inquire察Even to a shallow trench I dare commit The

vine察but deeper in the ground is fixed The tree that props it察aesculus in

chief察Which howso far its summit soars toward heaven察So deep strikes

root into the vaults of hell。 It therefore neither storms察 nor blasts察 nor

showers Wrench from its bed察unshaken it abides察Sees many a generation察

many an age Of men roll onward察 and survives them all察 Stretching its

titan arms and branches far察Sole central pillar of a world of shade。 Nor

toward the sunset let thy vineyards slope察Nor midst the vines plant hazel察

neither take The topmost shoots for cuttings察 nor from the top Of the

supporting tree your suckers tear察So deep their love of earth察nor wound

the plants With blunted blade察nor truncheons intersperse Of the wild olive此

for oft from careless swains A spark hath fallen察that察'neath the unctuous

rind Hid thief´like first察now grips the tough tree´bole察And mounting to

the leaves on high察sends forth A roar to heaven察then coursing through the

boughs And airy summits reigns victoriously察Wraps all the grove in robes

of fire察and gross With pitch´black vapour heaves the murky reek Skyward察

but chiefly if a storm has swooped Down on the forest察and a driving wind

Rolls up the conflagration。 When 'tis so察Their root´force fails them察nor察

when lopped away察Can they recover察and from the earth beneath Spring to

like verdure察thus alone survives The bare wild olive with its bitter leaves。

Let none persuade thee察 howso weighty´wise察To stir the soil when stiff

with Boreas' breath。 Then ice´bound winter locks the fields察nor lets The

young plant fix its frozen root to earth。 Best sow your vineyards when in

blushing Spring Comes the white bird long´bodied snakes abhor察Or on the

eve of autumn's earliest frost察 Ere the swift sun´steeds touch the wintry

Signs察While summer is departing。 Spring it is Blesses the fruit´plantation察

Spring the groves察 In Spring earth swells and claims the fruitful seed。

Then Aether察sire omnipotent察leaps down With quickening showers to his

glad wife's embrace察And察might with might commingling察rears to life All

germs that teem within her察 then resound With songs of birds the

greenwood´wildernesses察 And in due time the herds their loves renew察

Then the boon earth yields increase察and the fields Unlock their bosoms to

the warm west winds察Soft moisture spreads o'er all things察and the blades

Face the new suns察and safely trust them now察The vine´shoot察fearless of

the rising south察Or mighty north winds driving rain from heaven察Bursts

into bud察and every leaf unfolds。 Even so察methinks察when Earth to being

sprang察 Dawned the first days察 and such the course they held察 'Twas

Spring´tide then察ay察Spring察the mighty world Was keeping此Eurus spared

his wintry blasts察When first the flocks drank sunlight察and a race Of men

like iron from the hard glebe arose察And wild beasts thronged the woods察

and stars the heaven。 Nor could frail creatures bear this heavy strain察Did

not so large a respite interpose 'Twixt frost and heat察 and heaven's

relenting arms Yield earth a welcome。 For

the rest察whate'er The sets thou plantest in thy fields察thereon Strew refuse

rich察and with abundant earth Take heed to hide them察and dig in withal

Rough shells or porous stone察for therebetween Will water trickle and fine

vapour creep察And so the plants their drooping spirits raise。 Aye察and there

have been察who with weight of stone Or heavy potsherd press them from

above察This serves for shield in pelting showers察 and this When the hot

dog´star chaps the fields with drought。 The slips once planted察 yet

remains to cleave The earth about their roots persistently察And toss the

cumbrous hoes察or task the soil With burrowing plough´share察and ply up

and down Your labouring bullocks through the vineyard's midst察Then too

smooth reeds and shafts of whittled wand察And ashen poles and sturdy

forks to shape察Whereby supported they may learn to mount察Laugh at the

gales察 and through the elm´tops win From story up to story。

Now while yet The leaves are in their first fresh infant growth察 Forbear

their frailty察and while yet the bough Shoots joyfully toward heaven察with

loosened rein Launched on the void察assail it not as yet With keen´edged

sickle察but let the leaves alone Be culled with clip of fingers here and there。

But when they clasp the elms with sturdy trunks Erect察 then strip the

leaves off察prune the boughs察Sooner they shrink from steel察but then put

forth The arm of power察and stem the branchy tide。 Hedges too must be

woven and all beasts Barred entrance察chiefly while the leaf is young And

witless of disaster察for therewith察Beside harsh winters and o'erpowering

sun察Wild buffaloes and pestering goats for ay Besport them察 sheep and

heifers glut their greed。 Nor cold by hoar´frost curdled察nor the prone Dead

weight of summer upon the parched crags察So scathe it察as the flocks with

venom´bite Of their hard tooth察 whose gnawing scars the stem。 For no

offence but this to Bacchus bleeds The goat at every altar察and old plays

Upon the stage find entrance察therefore too The sons of Theseus through

the country´side´ Hamlet and crossway´ set the prize of wit察And on the

smooth sward over oiled skins Dance in their tipsy frolic。 Furthermore The

Ausonian swains察 a race from Troy derived察 Make merry with rough

rhymes and boisterous mirth察 Grim masks of hollowed bark assume察

invoke Thee with glad hymns察O Bacchus察and to thee Hang puppet´faces

on tall pines to swing。 Hence every vineyard teems with mellowing fruit察

Till hollow vale o'erflows察 and gorge profound察 Where'er the god hath

turned his comely head。 Therefore to Bacchus duly will we sing Meet

honour with ancestral hymns察 and cates And dishes bear him察 and the

doomed goat Led by the horn shall at the altar stand察Whose entrails rich

on hazel´spits we'll roast。 This further task again察 to dress the vine察

Hath needs beyond exhausting察the whole soil Thrice察four times察yearly

must be cleft察 the sod With hoes reversed be crushed continually察 The

whole plantation lightened of its leaves。 Round on the labourer spins the

wheel of toil察As on its own track rolls the circling year。 Soon as the vine

her lingering leaves hath shed察And the chill north wind from the forests

shook Their coronal察even then the careful swain Looks keenly forward to

the coming year察With Saturn's curved fang pursues and prunes The vine

forlorn察and lops it into shape。 Be first to dig the ground up察first to clear

And burn the refuse´branches察first to house Again your vine´poles察last to

gather fruit。 Twice doth the thickening shade beset the vine察Twice weeds

with stifling briers o'ergrow the crop察And each a toilsome labour。 Do thou

among the woods are cut察And reeds upon the river´banks察and still The

now the trees Let go the sickle察 and the last dresser now Sings of his
