an old and quiet street。 I remember that察 feeling a little hungry察
and not desiring to go back and take my share of the ^gouter察院
now on the refectory´table at Pelet¨s!to wit察pistolets and water!
I stepped into a baker¨s and refreshed myself on a couc┌殖!it is a
Flemish word察I don¨t know how to spell it!┐ Corinthe´anglice察a
currant bun!and a cup of coffee察and then I strolled on towards
the Porte de Louvain。 Very soon I was out of the city察and slowly
mounting the hill察which ascends from the gate察I took my time察for
the afternoon察 though cloudy察 was very sultry察 and not a breeze
stirred to refresh the atmosphere。 No inhabitant of Brussels need
wander far to search for solitude察let him but move half a league
from his own city and he will find her brooding still and blank over
the wide fields察so drear though so fertile察spread out treeless and
trackless round the capital of Brabant。 Having gained the summit
of the hill察and having stood and looked long over the cultured but
lifeless campaign察I felt a wish to quit the high road察which I had
hitherto followed察 and get in among those tilled grounds!fertile
as the beds of a Brobdignagian kitchen´garden!spreading far and
wide even to the boundaries of the horizon察 where察 from a dusk
green察distance changed them to a sullen blue察and confused their
tints with those of the livid and thunderous´looking sky。
Accordingly I turned up a by´path to the right察I had not followed
it far ere it brought me察 as I expected察 into the fields察 amidst
which察 just before me察 stretched a long and lofty white wall
enclosing察 as it seemed from the foliage showing above察 some
thickly planted nursery of yew and cypress察 for of that species
were the branches resting on the pale parapets察 and crowding
gloomily about a massive cross察 planted doubtless on a central
eminence and extending its arms察which seemed of black marble察

over the summits of those sinister trees。 I approached察wondering
to what house this well´protected garden appertained察I turned the
angle of the wall察 thinking to see some stately residence察 I was
close upon great iron gates察 there was a hut serving for a lodge
near察but I had no occasion to apply for the key!the gates were
open察 I pushed one leaf back!rain had rusted its hinges察 for it
groaned dolefully as they revolved。 Thick planting embowered the
entrance。 Passing up the avenue察 I saw objects on each hand
which察 in their own mute language。 of inscription and sign察
explained clearly to what abode I had made my way。 This was the
house appointed for all living察crosses察monuments察and garlands
of everlastings announced察 The Protestant Cemetery察outside the
gate of Louvain。 ̄
The place was large enough to afford half an hour¨s strolling
without the monotony of treading continually the same path察and察
for those who love to peruse the annals of graveyards察 here was
variety of inscription enough to occupy the attention for double or
treble that space of time。 Hither people of many kindreds察tongues察
and nations察 had brought their dead for interment察 and here察 on
pages of stone察of marble察and of brass察were written names察dates察
last tributes of pomp or love察 in English察 in French察 in German察
and Latin。 Here the Englishman had erected a marble monument
over the remains of his Mary Smith or Jane Brown察and inscribed
it only with her name。 There the French widower had shaded the
grave此of his Elmire or Celestine with a brilliant thicket of roses察
amidst which a little tablet rising察bore an equally bright testimony
to her countless virtues。 Every nation察 tribe察 and kindred察
mourned after its own fashion察 and how soundless was the
mourning of all My own tread察 though slow and upon smooth´

rolled paths察seemed to startle察because it formed the sole break to
a silence otherwise total。 Not only the winds察 but the very fitful察
wandering airs察 were that afternoon察 as by common consent察 all
fallen asleep in their various quarters察the north was hushed察the
south silent察 the east sobbed not察 nor did the west whisper。 The
clouds in heaven were condensed and dull察 but apparently quite
motionless。 Under the trees of this cemetery nestled a warm
breathless gloom察out of which the cypresses stood up straight and
mute察 above which the willows hung low and still察 where the
flowers察as languid as fair察waited listless for night dew or thunder´
shower察where the tombs察and those they hid察lay impassible to sun
or shadow察to rain or drought。
Importuned by the sound of my own footsteps察 I turned off
upon the turf察 and slowly advanced to a grove of yews察 I saw
something stir among the stems察 I thought it might be a broken
branch swinging察my short´sighted vision had caught no form察only
a sense of motion察but the dusky shade passed on察appearing and
disappearing at the openings in the avenue。 I soon discerned it
was a living thing察 and a human thing察 and察 drawing nearer察 I
perceived it was a woman察pacing slowly to and fro察and evidently
deeming herself alone as I had deemed myself alone察 and
meditating as I had been meditating。 Ere long she returned to a
seat which I fancy she had but just quitted察 or I should have
caught sight of her before。 It was in a nook察screened by a clump of
trees察there was the white wall before her察and a little stone set up
against the wall察and察at the foot of the stone察was an allotment of
turf freshly turned up察a new´made grave。 I put on my spectacles察
and passed softly close behind her察glancing at the inscription on
the stone察 I read察 Julienne Henri察 died at Brussels察 aged sixty。

August 10th察18!。 ̄ Having perused the inscription察I looked down
at the form sitting bent and thoughtful just under my eyes察
unconscious of the vicinity of any living thing察 it was a slim察
youthful figure in mourning apparel of the plainest black stuff察
with a little simple察black crape bonnet察I felt察as well as saw察who
it was察and察moving neither hand nor foot察I stood some moments
enjoying the security of conviction。 I had sought her for a month察
and had never discovered one of her traces!never met a hope察or
seized a chance of encountering her anywhere。 I had been forced
to loosen my grasp on expectation察and察but an hour ago察had sunk
slackly under the discouraging thought that the current of life察and
the impulse of destiny察had swept her for ever from my reach察and察
behold察 while bending suddenly earthward beneath the pressure
of despondency!while following with my eyes the track of sorrow
on the turf of a graveyard!here was my lost jewel dropped on the
tear´fed herbage察nestling in the messy and mouldy roots of yew´
trees。
Frances sat very quiet察her elbow on her knee察and her head on
her hand。 I knew she could retain a thinking attitude a long time
without change察 at last察 a tear fell察 she had been looking at the
name on the stone before her察 and her heart had no doubt
endured one of those constrictions with which the desolate living察
regretting the dead察are察at times察so sorely oppressed。 Many tears
rolled down察 which she wiped away察 again and agai
