CHAPTER II
Sanjaya。 Him察filled with such compassion and such grief察With eyes
tear´dimmed察 despondent察 in stern words The Driver察 Madhusudan察 thus
addressed此
Krishna。 How hath this weakness taken thee拭 Whence springs The
inglorious trouble察shameful to the brave察Barring the path of virtue拭Nay察
Arjun Forbid thyself to feebleness it mars Thy warrior´name cast off the
coward´fit Wake Be thyself Arise察Scourge of thy Foes
Arjuna。 How can I察in the battle察shoot with shafts On Bhishma察or on
Drona´O thou Chief Both worshipful察both honourable men拭
Better to live on beggar's bread With those we love alive察 Than
taste their blood in rich feasts spread察 And guiltily survive Ah were it
worse´who knowsto be Victor or vanquished here察 When those
confront us angrily Whose death leaves living drear拭 In pity lost察 by
doubtings tossed察 My thoughts´distracted´turn To Thee察 the Guide I
reverence most察 That I may counsel learn此I know not what would heal
the grief Burned into soul and sense察 If I were earth's unchallenged
chief A godand these gone thence
Sanjaya。 So spake Arjuna to the Lord of Hearts察And sighing察I will
not fight ─held silence then。 To whom察with tender smile察。O Bharata 。
While the Prince wept despairing 'twixt those hosts察Krishna made answer
in divinest verse此
Krishna。 Thou grievest where no grief should be thou speak'st Words
lacking wisdom for the wise in heart Mourn not for those that live察nor
those that die。 Nor I察nor thou察nor any one of these察Ever was not察nor ever
will not be察 For ever and for ever afterwards。 All察 that doth live察 lives
always To man's frame As there come infancy and youth and age察 So
come there raisings´up and layings´down Of other and of other life´abodes察
Which the wise know察and fear not。 This that irks Thy sense´life察thrilling
to the elements Bringing thee heat and cold察sorrows and joys察'Tis brief
and mutable Bear with it察Prince As the wise bear。 The soul which is not
moved察The soul that with a strong and constant calm Takes sorrow and
takes joy indifferently察Lives in the life undying That which is Can never
