The subtle Soul sits everywhere察 unstained此 Like to the light of the all´
piercing sun Which is not changed by aught it shines upon撮АThe Soul's
light shineth pure in every place察And they who察by such eye of wisdom察
see How Matter察and what deals with it察divide察And how the Spirit and the
flesh have strife察Those wise ones go the way which leads to Life

CHAPTER XIV
Krishna。 Yet farther will I open unto thee This wisdom of all wisdoms察
uttermost察The which possessing察all My saints have passed To perfectness。
On such high verities Reliant察rising into fellowship With Me察they are not
born again at birth Of Kalpas察nor at Pralyas suffer change
This Universe the womb is where I plant Seed of all lives Thence察
Prince of India察comes Birth to all beings Whoso察Kunti's Son Mothers
each mortal form察Brahma conceives察And I am He that fathers察sending
seed
Sattwan察 Rajas察 and Tamas察 so are named The qualities of Nature察
;Soothfastness察─ Passion察─and ;Ignorance。; These three bind down The
changeless Spirit in the changeful flesh。 Whereof sweet ;Soothfastness察─
by purity Living unsullied and enlightened察 binds The sinless Soul to
happiness and truth察 And Passion察 being kin to appetite察 And breeding
impulse and propensity察Binds the embodied Soul察O Kunti's Son By tie
of works。 But Ignorance察begot Of Darkness察blinding mortal men察binds
down Their souls to stupor察 sloth察 and drowsiness。 Yea察 Prince of India
Soothfastness binds souls In pleasant wise to flesh察and Passion binds By
toilsome strain察but Ignorance察which blots The beams of wisdom察binds
the soul to sloth。 Passion and Ignorance察 once overcome察 Leave
Soothfastness察O Bharata Where this With Ignorance are absent察Passion
rules察And Ignorance in hearts not good nor quick。 When at all gateways
of the Body shines The Lamp of Knowledge察 then may one see well
Soothfastness settled in that city reigns察Where longing is察and ardour察and
unrest察Impulse to strive and gain察and avarice察Those spring from Passion´
´Princeengrained察and where Darkness and dulness察sloth and stupor are察
'Tis Ignorance hath caused them察Kuru Chief
Moreover察 when a soul departeth察 fixed In Soothfastness察 it goeth to
the place Perfect and pureof those that know all Truth。 If it departeth in
set habitude Of Impulse察 it shall pass into the world Of spirits tied to
works察 and察 if it dies In hardened Ignorance察 that blinded soul Is born
anew in some unlighted womb。
The fruit of Soothfastness is true and sweet察The fruit of lusts is pain

and toil察the fruit Of Ignorance is deeper darkness。 Yea For Light brings
light察and Passion ache to have察And gloom察bewilderments察and ignorance
Grow forth from Ignorance。 Those of the first Rise ever higher察those of
the second mode Take a mid place察the darkened souls sink back To lower
deeps察loaded with witlessness
When察watching life察the living man perceives The only actors are the
Qualities察And knows what rules beyond the Qualities察Then is he come
nigh unto Me
The Soul察Thus passing forth from the Three Qualities Whereby arise
all bodiesovercomes Birth察Death察Sorrow察and Age察and drinketh deep
The undying wine of Amrit。
Arjuna。 Oh察my Lord Which be the signs to know him that hath gone
Past the Three Modes拭 How liveth he拭 What way Leadeth him safe
beyond the threefold Modes拭
Krishna。 He who with equanimity surveys Lustre of goodness察strife of
passion察sloth Of ignorance察not angry if they are察Not wishful when they
are not此 he who sits A sojourner and stranger in their midst Unruffled察
standing off察 sayingserene When troubles break察 These be the
Qualities ─He unto whomself´centredgrief and joy Sound as one word察
to whose deep´seeing eyes The clod察 the marble察 and the gold are one察
Whose equal heart holds the same gentleness For lovely and unlovely
things察 firm´set察 Well´pleased in praise and dispraise察 satisfied With
honour or dishonour察 unto friends And unto foes alike in tolerance察
Detached from undertakingshe is named Surmounter of the Qualities
And such With single察fervent faith adoring Me察Passing beyond the
Qualities察conforms To Brahma察and attains Me
For I am That whereof Brahma is the likeness Mine The Amrit is察and
Immortality Is mine察and mine perfect Felicity

CHAPTER XV
Krishna。 Men call the Aswatthathe Banyan´tree察 Which hath its
boughs beneath察its roots above察The ever´holy tree。 Yea for its leaves
Are green and waving hymns which whisper Truth Who knows the
Aswattha察knows Veds察and all。
Its branches shoot to heaven and sink to earth撮FN#30А Even as the
deeds of men察 which take their birth From qualities此 its silver sprays
and blooms察And all the eager verdure of its girth察Leap to quick life at
kiss of sun and air察 As men's lives quicken to the temptings fair Of
wooing sense此its hanging rootlets seek The soil beneath察helping to hold it
there察
As actions wrought amid this world of men Bind them by ever´
tightening bonds again。 If ye knew well the teaching of the Tree察What
its shape saith察and whence it springs察and察then
How it must end察and all the ills of it察The axe of sharp Detachment ye
would whet察 And cleave the clinging snaky roots察 and lay This
Aswattha of sense´life lowto set
New growths upspringing to that happier sky察Which they who reach
shall have no day to die察 Nor fade away察 nor fallto Him察 I mean察
FATHER and FIRST察Who made the mystery
Of old Creation察for to Him come they From passion and from dreams
who break away察 Who part the bonds constraining them to flesh察And察
Him察the Highest察worshipping alway
No longer grow at mercy of what breeze Of summer pleasure stirs the
sleeping trees察 What blast of tempest tears them察bough and stem To the
eternal world pass such as these
Another Sun gleams there another Moon Another Lightnot Dusk察
nor Dawn察 nor Noon Which they who once behold return no more察
They have attained My rest察life's Utmost boon
When察 in this world of manifested life察 The undying Spirit察 setting
forth from Me察 Taketh on form察 it draweth to itself From Being's
storehousewhich containeth all察 Senses and intellect。 The Sovereign
