Dolly was much puzzled at this new word察but she was rather
afraid of inquiring further察lest ^chapel ̄ might mean some haunt
of wickedness。 After a little thought she said!^Well察 Master
Marner察 it¨s niver too late to turn over a new leaf察 and if you¨ve
niver had no church察there¨s no telling the good it¨ll do you。 For I
feel so set up and comfortable as niver was察 when I¨ve been and
heard the prayers察and the singing to the praise and glory o¨ God察
as Mr。 Macey gives out!and Mr。 Crackenthorp saying good
words察 and more partic¨lar on Sacramen¨ Day察 and if a bit o¨
trouble comes察I feel as I can put up wi¨ it察for I¨ve looked for help i¨
the right quarter察and gev myself up to Them as we must all give
ourselves up to at the last察and if we¨n done our part察it isn¨t to be
believed as Them as are above us ¨ull be worse nor we are察 and
come short o¨ Their¨n。 ̄
Poor Dolly¨s exposition of her simple Raveloe theology fell
rather unmeaningly on Silas¨s ears察 for there was no word in it
that could rouse a memory of what he had known as religion察and
his comprehension was quite baffled by the plural pronoun察which
was no heresy of Dolly¨s察 but only her way of avoiding a
presumptuous familiarity。 He remained silent察not feeling inclined
to assent to the part of Dolly¨s speech which he fully understood!
her recommendation that he should go to church。 Indeed察 Silas
was so unaccustomed to talk beyond the brief questions and
answers necessary for the transaction of his simple business察that
words did not easily come to him without the urgency of a distinct
purpose。
But now little Aaron察having become used to the weaver¨s awful
presence察had advanced to his mother¨s side察and Silas察seeming to
notice him for the first time察tried to return Dolly¨s signs of good

will by offering the lad a bit of lard´cake。 Aaron shrank back a
little察and rubbed his head against his mother¨s shoulder察but still
thought the piece of cake worth the risk of putting his hand out for
it。
^Oh察for shame察Aaron 院said his mother察taking him on her lap察
however察 why察 you don¨t want cake again yet awhile。!He¨s
wonderful hearty察院she went on察with a little sigh! ̄that he is察God
knows。 He¨s my youngest察and we spoil him sadly察for either me or
the father must allays hev him in our sight!that we must。 ̄
She stroked Aaron¨s brown head察 and thought it must do
Master Marner good to see such a ^picture of a child ̄。 But
Marner察 on the other side of the hearth察 saw the neat´featured察
rosy face as a mere dim round察with two dark spots in it。
^And he¨s got a voice like a bird!you wouldn¨t think察院 Dolly
went on察 he can sing a Christmas carril as his father¨s taught him察
and I take it for a token as he¨ll come to good察as he can learn the
good tunes so quick。 Come察Aaron察stan¨ up and sing the carril to
Master Marner察come。 ̄
Aaron replied by rubbing his forehead against his mother¨s
shoulder。
^Oh察that¨s naughty察院said Dolly gently。 ^Stan¨ up察when mother
tells you察and let me hold the cake till you¨ve done。 ̄
Aaron was not indisposed to display his talents察even to an ogre察
under protecting circumstances察 and after a few more signs of
coyness察consisting chiefly in rubbing the backs of his hands over
his eyes察and then peeping between them at Master Marner察to see
if he looked anxious for the ^carril ̄察he at length allowed his head
to be duly adjusted察and standing behind the table察which let him
appear above it only as far as his broad frill察so that he looked like

a cherubic head untroubled with a body察 he began with a clear
chirp察 and in a melody that had the rhythm of an industrious
hammer!
^God rest you察merry gentlemen察Let nothing you dismay察 For
Jesus Christ our Saviour Was born on Christmas Day。 ̄
Dolly listened with a devout look察 glancing at Marner in some
confidence that this strain would help to allure him to church。
^That¨s Christmas music察院 she said察 when Aaron had ended察
and had secured his piece of cake again。 ^There¨s no other music
equil to the Christmas music!¨Hark the erol angils sing。¨ And you
may judge what it is at church察Master Marner察with the bassoon
and the voices察 as you can¨t help thinking you¨ve got to a better
place a¨ready!for I wouldn¨t speak ill o¨ this world察 seeing as
Them put us in it as knows best!but what wi¨ the drink察and the
quarrelling察and the bad illnesses察and the hard dying察as I¨ve seen
times and times察one¨s thankful to hear of a better。 The boy sings
pretty察don¨t he察Master Marner拭院
^Yes察院said Silas察absently察 very pretty。 ̄
The Christmas carol察 with its hammer´like rhythm察 had fallen
on his ears as strange music察quite unlike a hymn察and could have
none of the effect Dolly contemplated。 But he wanted to show her
that he was grateful察and the only mode that occurred to him was
to offer Aaron a bit more cake。
^Oh察no察thank you察Master Marner察院said Dolly察holding down
Aaron¨s willing hands。 ^We must be going home now。 And so I
wish you good´bye察Master Marner察 and if you ever feel anyways
bad in your inside察 as you can¨t fend for yourself察 I¨ll come and
clean up for you察and get you a bit o¨ victual察and willing。 But I beg
and pray of you to leave off weaving of a Sunday察for it¨s bad for

soul and body!and the money as comes i¨ that way ¨ull be a bad
bed to lie down on at the last察if it doesn¨t fly away察nobody knows
where察 like the white frost。 And you¨ll excuse me being that free
with you察 Master Marner察 for I wish you well!I do。 Make your
bow察Aaron。 ̄
Silas said ^Good´bye察and thank you kindly ̄察as he opened the
door for Dolly察but he couldn¨t help feeling relieved when she was
gone!relieved that he might weave again and moan at his ease。
Her simple view of life and its comforts察by which she had tried to
cheer him察 was only like a report of unknown objects察 which his
imagination could not fashion。 The fountains of human love and of
faith in a divine love had not yet been unlocked察and his soul was
still the shrunken rivulet察 with only this difference察 that its little
groove of sand was blocked up察 and it wandered confusedly
against dark obstruction。
And so察notwithstanding the honest persuasions of Mr。 Macey
and Dolly Winthrop察Silas spent his Christmas Day in loneliness察
eating his meat in sadness of heart察though the meat had come to
him as a neighbourly present。 In the morning he looked out on the
black frost that seemed to press cruelly on every blade of grass察
while the half´icy red pool shivered under the bitter wind察 but
towards evening the snow began to fall察 and curtained from him
even that dreary outlook察 shutting him close up with his narrow
grief。 And he sat in his robbed home through the livelong evening察
not caring to close his shutters or lock his door察pressing his head
between his hands and moaning察till the cold grasped him and told
him that his fire was gray。
Nobody in this world but himself knew that he was the same
Silas Marner who had once loved his fellow with tender love察and
