on the straw察instead of sleeping察he built for Thais little water´mills察and

ships no bigger than his hand察with all their rigging。

He had been badly treated by his masters察one of his ears was torn察and

his body covered with scars。 Yet his features always wore an air of joyous

peace。 And no one ever asked him whence he drew the consolation in his

soul察 and the peace in his heart。 He was as simple as a child。 As he

performed his heavy tasks察he sang察in a harsh voice察hymns which made

the child tremble and dream。 He murmured察in a gravely joyous tone

;Tell us察Mary察what thou hast seen where thou hast been拭 I saw

the shroud and the linen cloths察and the angels seated on the tomb。 And

I saw the glory of the Risen One。;

     She asked him

;Father察why do you sing about angels seated on a tomb拭─

     And he replied

;Little light of my eyes察I sing of the angels because Jesus察our Lord察is

risen to heaven。;

Ahmes was a Christian。 He had been baptised察 and was known as

Theodore at the meetings of the faithful察to which he went secretly during

the hours allowed him for sleep。

At that time the Church was suffering the severest trials。 By order of

the Emperor察the churches had been thrown down察the holy books burned察

the sacred vessels and candlesticks melted。 The Christians had been

deprived of all their honours察 and expected nothing but death。 Terror

reigned over all the community at Alexandria察 and the prisons were

crammed with victims。 It was whispered with horror amongst the faithful察

that in Syria察in Arabia察in Mesopotamia察in Cappadocia察in all the empire察

bishops and virgins had been flogged察tortured察crucified or thrown to wild

beasts。 Then Anthony察 already celebrated for his visions and his solitary

life察a prophet察and the head of all the Egyptian believers察descended like

an eagle from his desert rock on the city of Alexandria察and察flying from

church to church察 fired the whole community with his holy ardour。

Invisible to the pagans察he was present at the same time at all the meetings

of Christians察 endowing all with the spirit of strength and prudence by

which he was animated。 Slaves察 in particular察 were persecuted with

singular severity。 Many of them察 seized with fright察 denied the faith。

Others察 and by far the greater number察 fled to the desert察 hoping to live

there察 either as hermits or robbers。 Ahmes察 however察 frequented the

meetings as usual察visited the prisoners察buried the martyrs察and joyfully

professed the religion of Christ。 The great Anthony察who saw his unshaken

zeal察before he returned into the desert察pressed the black slave in his arms察

and gave him the kiss of peace。

When Thais was seven years old察Ahmes began to talk to her of God。

;The good Lord God察─he said察 lived in heaven like a Pharaoh察under

the tents of His harem察 and under the trees of His gardens。 He was the

Ancient of Ancients察and older than the world察and He had but one Son察

the Prince Jesus察whom He loved with all His heart察and who surpassed in

beauty the virgins and the angels。 And the good Lord God said to Prince

Jesus

; 'Leave My harem and My palace察and My date trees and My running

waters。 Descend to earth for the welfare of men。 There Thou shalt be like a

little child察and Thou shalt live poor amongst the poor。 Suffering shall be

Thy daily bread察 and Thou shalt weep so profusely that Thy tears shall

form rivers察in which the tired slave shall bathe with delight。 Go察My Son'

;Prince Jesus obeyed the good Lord察and He came down to earth察to a

place named Bethlehem of Judaea。 And He walked in fields察 amidst the

flowering anemones察saying to His companion

; 'Blessed are they who hunger察 for I will lead them to My Father's

table Blessed are they who thirst察for they shall drink of the fountains of

heaven Blessed are they who weep察 for I will dry their tears with veils

finer than those of the almehs'

;That is why the poor loved Him察and believed in Him。 But the rich

hated Him察fearing that He should raise the poor above them。 At that time察

Cleopatra and Caesar were powerful on the earth。 They both hated Jesus察

and they ordered the judges and priests to put Him to death。 To obey the

Queen of Egypt察the princes of Syria erected a cross on a high mountain察

and they caused Jesus to die on this cross。 But women washed His corpse察

and buried it察and Prince Jesus察having broken the door of His tomb察rose

again to the good Lord察His Father。

;And察from that time察all those who believed in Him go to heaven。

;The Lord God opens His arms察and says to them

; 'Ye are welcome察 because ye love the Prince察 My Son。 Wash察 and

then eat。'

;They bathe to the sound of beautiful music察and察all the time they are

eating察 they see almehs dancing察 and they listen to tales that never end。

They are dearer to the good Lord God than the light of His eyes察because

they are His guests察and they shall have for their portion the carpets of His

house察and the pomegranates of His gardens。;

Ahmes often spoke in this strain察 and thus taught the truth to Thais。

She wondered察and said

     ;I should like to eat the pomegranates of the good Lord。;

     Ahmes replied

     ;Only those who are baptised may taste the fruits of heaven。;

And Thais asked to be baptised。 Seeing by this that she believed in

Jesus察the slave resolved to instruct her more fully察so that察being baptised察

she might enter the Church察and he loved her as his spiritual daughter。

The child察unloved and uncared for by its selfish parents察had no bed in

the house。 She slept in a corner of the stable amongst the domestic animals察

and there Ahmes came to her every night secretly。

He gently approached the mat on which she lay察and sat down on his

heels察his legs bent and his body straighta position hereditary to his race。

His face and his body察which was clothed in black察were invisible in the

darkness察but his big white eyes shone out察and there came from them a

light like a ray of dawn through the chinks of a door。 He spoke in a husky察

monotonous tone察with a slight nasal twang that gave it the soft melody of

music heard at night in the streets。 Sometimes the breathing of an ass察or

the soft lowing of an ox察accompanied察like a chorus of invisible spirits察

the voice of the slave as he recited the gospels。 His words flowed gently in

the darkness察 which they filled with zeal察 mercy察 and hope察 and the

neophyte察 her hand in that of Ahmes察 lulled by the monotonous sounds察

and the vague visions in her mind察 slept calm and smiling察 amid the

harmonies of the dark night and the holy mysteries察gazed down on by a

star察which twinkled between the joists of the stable´roof。

The initiation lasted a whole year察 till the time when the Christians

joyfully celebrate the festival of Easter。 One night in the holy week察Thais察

who was already asleep on her mat察felt herself lifted by the slave察whose

eyes gleamed with a strange light。 He was clad察not as usual in a pair of

torn drawers察but in a long white cloak察beneath which he pressed the child察

whispering to her

;Come察 my soul Come察 light of my eyes Come察 little sweetheart

Come and be clad in the baptismal robes ─

He carried the child pressed to his breast。 Frightened and yet curious察

Thais察her head out of the cloak察threw her arms round her friend's neck察

and he ran with her through the darkness。 They went down narrow察black

alleys察 they passed through the Jews' quarter察 they skirted a cemetery察

where the osprey uttered its dismal cry察 they traversed an open space察

passing under crosses on which hung the bodies of victims察 and on the

arms of the crosses the ravens clacked their beaks。 Thais hid her head in

the slave's breast。
