The Council Chamber
A Council table brought in察with chairs and stools察and placed under
the state。 Enter LORD CHANCELLOR察places himself at the upper end of
the table on the left band察 a seat being left void above him察 as for
Canterbury's seat。 DUKE OF SUFFOLK察 DUKE OF NORFOLK察
SURREY察 LORD CHAMBERLAIN察 GARDINER察 seat themselves in
order on each side察CROMWELL at lower end察as secretary。 KEEPER at
the door
CHANCELLOR。 Speak to the business察 master secretary察 Why are
we met in council拭CROMWELL。 Please your honours察The chief cause
concerns his Grace of Canterbury。 GARDINER。 Has he had knowledge of
it拭CROMWELL。 Yes。 NORFOLK。 Who waits there拭KEEPER。 Without察
my noble lords拭GARDINER。 Yes。 KEEPER。 My Lord Archbishop察And
has done half an hour察to know your pleasures。 CHANCELLOR。 Let him
come in。 KEEPER。 Your Grace may enter now。
CRANMER approaches the Council table
CHANCELLOR。 My good Lord Archbishop察I am very sorry To sit
here at this present察and behold That chair stand empty察but we all are men察
In our own natures frail and capable Of our flesh察few are angels察out of
which frailty And want of wisdom察 you察that best should teach us察Have
misdemean'd yourself察and not a little察Toward the King first察then his laws察
in filling The whole realm by your teaching and your chaplains For so
we are inform'dwith new opinions察 Divers and dangerous察 which are
heresies察And察 not reform'd察 may prove pernicious。 GARDINER。 Which
reformation must be sudden too察My noble lords察for those that tame wild
horses Pace 'em not in their hands to make 'em gentle察 But stop their
mouth with stubborn bits and spur 'em Till they obey the manage。 If we
suffer察 Out of our easiness and childish pity To one man's honour察 this
contagious sickness察 Farewell all physic察 and what follows then拭
Commotions察uproars察with a general taint Of the whole state察as of late
days our neighbours察The upper Germany察can dearly witness察Yet freshly
pitied in our memories。 CRANMER。 My good lords察 hitherto in all the

progress Both of my life and office察 I have labour'd察And with no little
study察that my teaching And the strong course of my authority Might go
one way察and safely察and the end Was ever to do well。 Nor is there living
I speak it with a single heart察my lords A man that more detests察more
stirs against察Both in his private conscience and his place察Defacers of a
public peace than I do。 Pray heaven the King may never find a heart With
less allegiance in it Men that make Envy and crooked malice nourishment
Dare bite the best。 I do beseech your lordships That察in this case of justice察
my accusers察Be what they will察may stand forth face to face And freely
urge against me。 SUFFOLK。 Nay察 my lord察 That cannot be察 you are a
councillor察And by that virtue no man dare accuse you。 GARDINER。 My
lord察 because we have business of more moment察We will be short with
you。 'Tis his Highness' pleasure And our consent察for better trial of you察
From hence you be committed to the Tower察Where察being but a private
man again察You shall know many dare accuse you boldly察More than察I fear察
you are provided for。 CRANMER。 Ah察 my good Lord of Winchester察 I
thank you察You are always my good friend察if your will pass察I shall both
find your lordship judge and juror察You are so merciful。 I see your end
'Tis my undoing。 Love and meekness察 lord察 Become a churchman better
than ambition察 Win straying souls with modesty again察 Cast none away。
That I shall clear myself察Lay all the weight ye can upon my patience察I
make as little doubt as you do conscience In doing daily wrongs。 I could
say more察But reverence to your calling makes me modest。 GARDINER。
My lord察my lord察you are a sectary察That's the plain truth。 Your painted
gloss discovers察 To men that understand you察 words and weakness。
CROMWELL。 My Lord of Winchester察y'are a little察By your good favour察
too sharp察men so noble察However faulty察yet should find respect For what
they have been察'tis a cruelty To load a falling man。 GARDINER。 Good
Master Secretary察 I cry your honour mercy察 you may察 worst Of all this
table察say so。 CROMWELL。 Why察my lord拭GARDINER。 Do not I know
you for a favourer Of this new sect拭Ye are not sound。 CROMWELL。 Not
sound拭 GARDINER。 Not sound察 I say。 CROMWELL。 Would you were
half so honest Men's prayers then would seek you察 not their fears。
GARDINER。 I shall remember this bold language。 CROMWELL。 Do。

KING HENRY THE EIGHTH
Remember your bold life too。 CHANCELLOR。 This is too much察Forbear察
for shame察 my lords。 GARDINER。 I have done。 CROMWELL。 And I。
CHANCELLOR。 Then thus for you察my lord此it stands agreed察I take it察by
all voices察that forthwith You be convey'd to th' Tower a prisoner察There to
remain till the King's further pleasure Be known unto us。 Are you all
agreed察lords拭ALL。 We are。 CRANMER。 Is there no other way of mercy察
But I must needs to th' Tower察my lords拭GARDINER。 What other Would
you expect拭You are strangely troublesome。 Let some o' th' guard be ready
there。
Enter the guard
CRANMER。 For me拭Must I go like a traitor thither拭GARDINER。
Receive him察And see him safe i' th' Tower。 CRANMER。 Stay察good my
lords察I have a little yet to say。 Look there察my lords察By virtue of that ring
I take my cause Out of the gripes of cruel men and give it To a most noble
judge察 the King my master。 CHAMBERLAIN。 This is the King's ring。
SURREY。 'Tis no counterfeit。 SUFFOLK。 'Tis the right ring察by heav'n。 I
told ye all察When we first put this dangerous stone a´rolling察'Twould fall
upon ourselves。 NORFOLK。 Do you think察my lords察The King will suffer
but the little finger Of this man to be vex'd拭CHAMBERLAIN。 'Tis now
too certain察How much more is his life in value with him Would I were
fairly out on't CROMWELL。 My mind gave me察 In seeking tales and
informations Against this manwhose honesty the devil And his disciples
only envy at Ye blew the fire that burns ye。 Now have at ye
Enter the KING frowning on them察he takes his seat
GARDINER。 Dread sovereign察how much are we bound to heaven In
daily thanks察that gave us such a prince察Not only good and wise but most
religious察One that in all obedience makes the church The chief aim of his
honour and察 to strengthen That holy duty察 out of dear respect察 His royal
self in judgment comes to hear The cause betwixt her and this great
offender。 KING。 You were ever good at sudden commendations察Bishop of
Winchester。 But know I come not To hear such flattery now察 and in my
presence They are too thin and bare to hide offences。 To me you cannot
reach you play the spaniel察And think with wagging of your tongue to win
me察But whatsoe'er thou tak'st me for察I'm sure Thou hast a cruel nature
