The warrior whose ennobled name Is woven with his country's fame察
Triumphant over all察 I found weak察 palsied察 bloated察blear察 His province
seemed to be察to leer At bonnets in Pall Mall。
Would that ye always shone察 who write察 Bathed in your own innate
limelight察And ye who battles wage察Or that in darkness I had died Before
my soul had ever sighed To see you off the stage

The Bab Ballads
Ballad此Babette's Love
BABETTE she was a fisher gal察With jupon striped and cap in crimps。
She passed her days inside the Halle察 Or catching little nimble shrimps。
Yet she was sweet as flowers in May察With no professional bouquet。
JACOT was察 of the Customs bold察An officer察 at gay Boulogne察 He
loved BABETTE ´ his love he told察 And sighed察 Oh察 soyez vous my
own ─But ;Non ─said she察 JACOT察my pet察Vous etes trop scraggy pour
BABETTE。
;Of one alone I nightly dream察An able mariner is he察And gaily serves
the Gen'ral Steam´ Boat Navigation Companee。 I'll marry him察if he but
will ´ His name察I rather think察is BILL。
;I see him when he's not aware察Upon our hospitable coast察Reclining
with an easy air Upon the PORT against a post察A´thinking of察I'll dare to
say察His native Chelsea far away ─
;Oh察mon ─exclaimed the Customs bold察 Mes yeux ─he said which
means ;my eye; ;Oh察chere ─he also cried察I'm told察 Par Jove察─he added察
with a sigh。 ;Oh察mon oh察chere mes yeux par Jove Je n'aime pas cet
enticing cove ─
The PANTHER'S captain stood hard by察He was a man of morals strict
If e'er a sailor winked his eye察Straightway he had that sailor licked察Mast´
headed all such was his code Who dashed or jiggered察blessed or blowed。
He wept to think a tar of his Should lean so gracefully on posts察He
sighed and sobbed to think of this察On foreign察French察and friendly coasts。
;It's human natur'察p'raps ´ if so察Oh察isn't human natur' low ─
He called his BILL察 who pulled his curl察 He said察 My BILL察 I
understand You've captivated some young gurl On this here French and
foreign land。 Her tender heart your beauties jog ´ They do察you know they
do察you dog。
;You have a graceful way察I learn察Of leaning airily on posts察By which
you've been and caused to burn A tender flame on these here coasts。 A
fisher gurl察I much regret察 Her age察sixteen ´ her name察BABETTE。

when you matrimonied are察I will appoint her stewardess。; But WILLIAM
hitched himself and sighed察And cleared his throat察and thus replied此
;Not so此 unless you're fond of strife察 You'd better mind your own
affairs察I have an able´bodied wife Awaiting me at Wapping Stairs察If all
this here to her I tell察She'll larrup you and me as well。
;Skin´deep察 and valued at a pin察 Is beauty such as VENUS owns ´
HER beauty is beneath her skin察And lies in layers on her bones。 The other
sailors of the crew They always calls her 'Whopping Sue';
;Oho ─ the Captain said察 I see And is she then so very strong拭─
;She'd take your honour's scruff察─said he ;And pitch you over to Bolong ─
;I pardon you察─the Captain said察 The fair BABETTE you needn't wed。;
Perhaps the Customs had his will察And coaxed the scornful girl to wed察
Perhaps the Captain and his BILL察And WILLIAM'S little wife are dead察
Or p'raps they're all alive and well此I cannot察cannot察cannot tell。

You'll find him working mildly at the Bar察After a touch at two or three
professions察From easy affluence extremely far察A brief or two on Circuit ´
;soup; at Sessions察A pound or two from whist and backing horses察And察

Quiet in harness察free from serious vice察His faults are not particularly
shady察You'll never find him ;SHY; ´ for察once or twice Already察he's been
driven by a lady察Who parts with him ´ perhaps a poor excuse for him ´
Because she hasn't any further use for him。

Ballad此The Folly Of Brown ´ By A
General Agent
I knew a boor ´ a clownish card His only friends were pigs and cows
and The poultry of a small farmyard察 Who came into two hundred
thousand。
Good fortune worked no change in BROWN察Though she's a mighty
social chymist察 He was a clown ´ and by a clown I do not mean a
pantomimist。
It left him quiet察calm察and cool察Though hardly knowing what a crown
was ´ You can't imagine what a fool Poor rich uneducated BROWN was
He scouted all who wished to come And give him monetary schooling察
And I propose to give you some Idea of his insensate fooling。
I formed a company or two ´ Of course I don't know what the rest
meant察 I formed them solely with a view To help him to a sound
investment。
Their objects were ´ their only cares ´ To justify their Boards in
showing A handsome dividend on shares And keep their good promoter
going。
But no ´ the lout sticks to his brass察 Though shares at par I freely
proffer此Yet ´ will it be believed拭 the ass Declines察with thanks察my well´

But will it be believed that he察 With grin upon his face of poppy察
Declined my aid察 while thanking me For what he called my

I showed him that his coat察 all dust察 Top boots and cords provoked
compassion察And proved that men of station must Conform to the decrees
of fashion。
I showed him where to buy his hat To coat him察trouser him察and boot
