       Mr。 Van Kirk wheeled round on his chair and faced the speaker此

     ;That is all Greek to me察─he said察in a severe tone。 ;Can you keep

accounts拭─

     ;No。     I am afraid not。;

     Keeping accounts was not deemed a classical accomplishment in

Norway。 It was only ;trade´ rats; who troubled themselves about such

gross things察 and if our Norseman had not been too absorbed with the

problem of his destiny察he would have been justly indignant at having such

a question put to him。

     ;Then you don't know book´keeping拭─

     ;I think not。    I never tried it。;

     ;Then you may be sure you don't know it。 But you must certainly

have tried your hand at something。 Is there nothing you can think of

which might help you to get a living拭─

     ;I can play the pianoandand the violin。;

     ;Very well察then。 You may come this afternoon to my house。 Mr。

Olson will tell you the address。 I will give you a note to Mrs。 Van Kirk。

Perhaps she will engage you as a music teacher for the children。 Good

morning。;

                                               IV。

       At half´past four o'clock in the afternoon察 Halfdan found himself

standing in a large察 dimly lighted drawing´room察 whose brilliant

upholstery察 luxurious carpets察 and fantastically twisted furniture dazzled

and bewildered his senses。 All was so strange察 so strange察 nowhere a

familiar object to give rest to the wearied eye。 Wherever he looked he

saw his shabbily attired figure repeated in the long crystal mirrors察and he

became uncomfortably conscious of his threadbare coat察his uncouth boots察

and the general incongruity of his appearance。 With every moment his

uneasiness grew察 and he was vaguely considering the propriety of a

precipitate flight察when the rustle of a dress at the farther end of the room

startled him察and a small察plump lady察of a daintily exquisite form察swept

up toward him察gave a slight inclination of her head察and sank down into

an easy´chair此

     ;You are Mr。 察the Norwegian察who wishes to give music lessons拭─

she said察 holding a pair of gold´framed eyeglasses up to her eyes察 and

running over the note which she held in her hand。 It read as follows此

        DEAR MARTHAThe bearer of this note is a young Norwegian察I

forgot to ascertain his name察 a friend of Olson's。 He wishes to teach

music。 If you can help the poor devil and give him something to do察you

will oblige察                          Yours察                       H。 V。 K。

        Mrs。 Van Kirk was evidently察by at least twelve years察her husband's

junior察and apparently not very far advanced in the forties。 Her blonde

hair察 which was freshly crimped察 fell lightly over her smooth察 narrow

forehead察her nose察mouth and chin had a neat distinctness of outline察her

complexion was either naturally or artificially perfect察and her eyes察which

were of the purest blue察 had察 owing to their near´sightedness察 a certain

pinched and scrutinizing look。 This look察 which was without the

slightest touch of severity察 indicating merely a lively degree of interest察

was further emphasized by three small perpendicular wrinkles察 which

deepened and again relaxed according to the varying intensity of

observation she bestowed upon the object which for the time engaged her

                           TALES FROM TWO HEMISPHERES。

     ;Your name察 if you please拭─ said Mrs。 Van Kirk察 having for awhile

measured her visitor with a glance of mild scrutiny。

     ;Halfdan Bjerk。;

     ;Half´dan B察how do you spell that拭─

     ;B´j´e´r´k。;

     ;B´jerk。 Well察but I mean察what is your name in English拭─

     Halfdan looked blank察and blushed to his ears。

     ;I wish to know察─continued the lady energetically察evidently anxious

to help him out察 what your name would mean in plain English。 Bjerk察it

certainly must mean something。;

     ;Bjerk is a treea birch´tree。;

     ;Very well察 Birchthat is a very respectable name。 And your first

name拭 What did you say that was拭

     ;H´a´l´f´d´a´n。;

     ;Half Dan。 Why not a whole Dan and be done with it拭 Dan Birch察

or rather Daniel Birch。        Indeed察that sounds quite Christian。;

     ;As you please察madam察─faltered the victim撮察looking very unhappy。

     ;You will pardon my straightforwardness察 won't you拭 B´jerk。 I

could never pronounce that察you know。;

     ;Whatever may be agreeable to you察 madam察 will be sure to please

me。;

     ;That is very well said。 And you will find that it always pays to try to

please me。 And you wish to teach music拭 If you have no objection I

will call my oldest daughter。 She is an excellent judge of music察and if

your playing meets with her approval察I will engage you察as my husband

suggests察 not to teach Edith察 you understand察 but my youngest child察

Clara。;

     Halfdan bowed assent察 and Mrs。 Van Kirk rustled out into the hall

where she rang a bell察and re´entered。 A servant in dress´coat appeared察

and again vanished as noiselessly as he had come。 To our Norseman

there was some thing weird and uncanny about these silent entrances and

exits察he could hardly suppress a shudder。 He had been accustomed to

hear the clatter of people's heels upon the bare floors察as they approached察

and the audible crescendo of their footsteps gave one warning察 and

prevented one from being taken by surprise。 While absorbed in these

reflections察his senses must have been dormant察for just then Miss Edith

Van Kirk entered察 unheralded by anything but a hovering perfume察 the

effect of which was to lull him still deeper into his wondering abstraction。

     ;Mr。 Birch察─said Mrs。 Van Kirk察 this is my daughter Miss Edith察─and

as Halfdan sprang to his feet and bowed with visible embarrassment察she

continued此

     ;Edith察 this is Mr。 Daniel Birch察 whom your father has sent here to

know if he would be serviceable as a music teacher for Clara。 And now察

dear察you will have to decide about the merits of Mr。 Birch。 I don't know

enough about music to be anything of a judge。;

     ;If Mr。 Birch will be kind enough to play察─ said Miss Edith with a

languidly musical intonation察─I shall be happy to listen to him。;

     Halfdan silently signified his willingness and followed the ladies to a

smaller apartment which was separated from the drawing´room by folding

doors。 The apparition of the beautiful young girl who was walking at his

side had suddenly filled him with a strange burning and shuddering

happiness察he could not tear his eyes away from her察she held him as by a

powerful spell。 And still察 all the while he had a painful sub´

consciousness of his own unfortunate appearance察which was thrown into

cruel relief by her splendor。 The tall察lithe magnificence of her form察the

airy elegance of her toilet察which seemed the perfection of self´concealing

art察 the elastic deliberateness of her stepall wrought like a gentle察

deliciously soothing opiate upon the Norseman's fancy and lifted him into

hitherto unknown regions of mingled misery and bliss。 She seemed a

combination of the most divine contradictions察 one moment supremely

conscious察and in the next adorably child´like and simple察now full of arts
