         CHAPTER XLIII YEAR 1802

;Experience teaches fools察─was the first moral apothegm that I wrote

in small text察when learning to write at the school察and I have ever since

thought it was a very sensible reflection。 For assuredly察as year after year

has flown away on the swift wings of time察I have found my experience

mellowing察 and my discernment improving察 by which I have察 in the

afternoon of life察been enabled to foresee what kings and nations would do察

by the symptoms manifested within the bounds of the society around me。

Therefore察 at the beginning of the spring in this Ann。 Dom。察 I had

misgivings at the heart察 a fluttering in my thoughts察 and altogether a

strange uneasiness as to the stability of the peace and harmony that was

supposed to be founded upon a steadfast foundation between us and the

French people。 What my fears principally took their rise from察was a sort

of compliancy察on the part of those in power and authority察to cultivate the

old relations and parts between them and the commonalty。 It did not

appear to me that this proceeded from any known or decided event察for I

read the papers at this period daily察but from some general dread and fear察

that was begotten察 like a vapour out of the fermentation of all sorts of

opinions察most people of any sagacity thinking that the state of things in

France being so much of an antic察poetical察and playactor´like guise察that it

would never obtain that respect察 far less that reverence from the world察

which is necessary to the maintenance of all beneficial government。 The

consequence of this was a great distrust between man and man察 and an

aching restlessness among those who had their bread to bake in the world察

persons possessing the power to provide for their kindred察forcing them察as

it were察 down the throats of those who were dependent on them in

business察a bitter morsel。

But the pith of these remarks chiefly applies to the manufacturing

concerns of the new town of Cayenneville察for in the clachan we lived in

the lea of the dike察 and were more taken up with our own natural rural

affairs察and the markets for victual察than the craft of merchandise。 The

only man interested in business察who walked in a steady manner at his old

pace察though he sometimes was seen察being of a spunkie temper察grinding

the teeth of vexation察was Mr Cayenne himself。

One day察however察he came to me at the manse。 ;Doctor察─says he察

for so he always called me察 I want your advice。 I never choose to

trouble others with my private affairs察but there are times when the word

of an honest man may do good。 I need not tell you察that when I declared

myself a Royalist in America察it was at a considerable sacrifice。 I have察

however察nothing to complain of against government on that score察but I

think it damn'd hard that those personal connexions察 whose interests I

preserved to the detriment of my own察should in my old age make such an

ungrateful return。 By the steps I took prior to quitting America察I saved

the property of a great mercantile concern in London。 In return for that察

they took a share with me察and for me察in the cotton´mill察and being here

on the spot察as manager察I have both made and saved them money。 I have察

no doubt察bettered my own fortune in the mean time。 Would you believe

it察doctor察they have written a letter to me察saying that they wish to provide

for a relation察and requiring me to give up to him a portion of my share in

the concerna pretty sort of providing this察 at another man's expense

But I'll be damn'd if I do any such thing If they want to provide for their

friend察let them do so from themselves察and not at my costWhat is your

opinion拭─

This appeared to me a very weighty concern察and察not being versed in

mercantile dealing察 I did not well know what to say察 but I reflected for

some time察and then I replied察 As far察Mr Cayenne察as my observation has

gone in this world察I think that the giffs and the gaffs nearly balance one

another察and when they do not察there is a moral defect on the failing side。

If a man long gives his labour to his employer察and is paid for that labour察

it might be said that both are equal察but I say no。 For it's in human nature

to be prompt to change察 and the employer察 having always more in his

power than his servant or agent察it seems to me a clear case察 that in the

course of a number of years察the master of the old servant is the obligated

of the two察and therefore I say察in the first place察in your case there is no tie

or claim察by which you may察in a moral sense察be called upon to submit to

                                               153

the dictates of your London correspondents察but there is a reason察in the

nature of the thing and case察by which you may ask a favour from them

So察the advice I would give you would be this此 write an answer to their

letter察and tell them that you have no objection to the taking in of a new

partner察 but you think it would be proper to revise all the copartnery察

especially as you have察 considering the manner in which you have

advanced the business察 been of opinion察 that your share should be

considerably enlarged。;

I thought Mr Cayenne would have louped out of his skin with mirth at

this notion察 and察 being a prompt man察 he sat down at my scrutoire察 and

answered the letter which gave him so much uneasiness。 No notice was

taken of it for some time察but in the course of a month he was informed察

that it was not considered expedient at that time to make any change in the

company。 I thought the old man was gone by himself when he got this

letter。 He came over instantly in his chariot察from the cotton´mill office

to the manse察 and swore an oath察 by some dreadful name察 that I was a

Solomon。 However察 I only mention this to show how experience had

instructed me察and as a sample of that sinister provisioning of friends that

was going on in the world at this timeall owing察as I do verily believe察to

the uncertain state of governments and national affairs。

Besides these generalities察I observed another thing working to effect

mankind read more察 and the spirit of reflection and reasoning was more

awake than at any time within my remembrance。 Not only was there a

handsome bookseller's shop in Cayenneville察 with a London newspaper

daily察but magazines察and reviews察and other new publications。

Till this year察when a chaise was wanted we had to send to Irville察but

Mr Toddy of the Cross´Keys being in at Glasgow察he bought an excellent

one at the second´hand察a portion of the effects of a broken merchant察by

which察 from that period察 we had one of our own察 and it proved a great

convenience察for I察who never but twice in my life before hired that kind

of commodity察had it thrice during the summer察for a bit jaunt with Mrs

Balwhidder to divers places and curiosities in the county that I had not

seen before察 by which our ideas were greatly enlarged察 indeed察 I have

always had a partiality for travelling察as one of the best means of opening

          CHAPTER XLIV YEAR 1803

During the tempestuous times that ensued察from the death of the King

of France by the hands of the executioner in 1793察 there had been a
