                          A Japanese Wood´Carving 



     High   up   above   the open�察  �welcoming   door   It   hangs�察  �a   piece of   wood 

with colours dim。 Once�察�long ago�察�it was a waving tree And knew the sun 

and   shadow   through   the   leaves   Of   forest   trees�察  �in   a   thick   eastern   wood。 

The winter snows had bent its branches down�察�The spring had swelled its 

buds   with   coming   flowers�察  �Summer   had   run   like   fire   through   its   veins�察�

While autumn pelted it with chestnut burrs�察�And strewed the leafy ground 

with acorn cups。 Dark midnight storms had roared and crashed among Its 

branches�察�breaking here and there a limb�察�But every now and then broad 

sunlit days Lovingly lingered�察�caught among the leaves。 Yes�察�it had known 

all   this�察 �and   yet   to  us   It  does   not   speak    of  mossy     forest   ways�察   �Of 

whispering   pine trees or   the   shimmering birch�察  �But   of   quick   winds�察  �and 

the   salt�察  �stinging   sea�   �An   artist   once�察  �with  patient�察  �careful   knife�察  �Had 

fashioned it like to the untamed sea。 Here waves uprear themselves�察�their 

tops   blown   back   By   the   gay�察  �sunny   wind�察  �which   whips   the   blue   And 

breaks it into gleams and sparks of light。 Among the flashing waves are 

two white birds Which swoop�察�and soar�察�and scream for very joy At the 

wild sport。      Now diving quickly in�察�Questing some glistening fish。                  Now 

flying up�察�Their dripping feathers shining in the sun�察�While the wet drops 

like little glints of light�察�Fall pattering backward to the parent sea。 Gliding 

along the green and foam´flecked hollows�察�Or skimming some white crest 

about   to   break�察  �The   spirits   of   the   sky   deigning   to   stoop And   play   with 

ocean   in   a   summer   mood。   Hanging   above   the   high�察  �wide   open   door�察  �It 

brings to us in quiet�察�firelit room�察�The freedom of the earth's vast solitudes�察�

Where   heaping�察  �sunny   waves   tumble   and   roll�察  �And   seabirds   scream   in 

wanton happiness。

                                    A Little Song 



     When you�察�my Dear�察�are away�察�away�察�How wearily goes the creeping 

day。 A  year   drags after morning�察 �and night Starts   another year of   candle 

light。 O Pausing Sun and Lingering Moon� �Grant me�察�I beg of you�察�this 

boon。 

     Whirl round the earth as never sun Has his diurnal journey run。 And�察�

Moon�察�slip past the ladders of air In a single flash�察�while your streaming 

hair Catches the stars and pulls them down To shine on some slumbering 

Chinese   town。   O   Kindly   Sun�      �Understanding   Moon�   �Bring   evening   to 

crowd the footsteps of noon。 

     But   when    that  long   awaited    day   Hangs    ripe  in  the  heavens�察   �your 

voyaging stay。 Be morning�察�O Sun� �with the lark in song�察�Be afternoon for 

ages long。 And�察�Moon�察�let you and your lesser lights Watch over a century 

of nights。 



                                    Behind a Wall 



     I own a solace shut within my heart�察          �A garden full of many a quaint 

delight    And warm with drowsy�察�poppied sunshine�察�bright�察�Flaming with 

lilies   out   of   whose   cups   dart      Shining   things          With    powdered 

wings。 

     Here   terrace   sinks   to   terrace�察  �arbors   close  The   ends   of   dreaming 

paths�察   �a  wanton    wind     Jostles   the   half´ripe  pears�察  �and   then�察  �unkind�察�

Tumbles      a´slumber     in  a  pillar  rose�察        �With     content          Grown 

indolent。 

     By night my garden is o'erhung with gems              Fixed in an onyx setting。 

Fireflies    Flicker   their   lanterns   in   my   dazzled   eyes。   In   serried   rows   I 

guess the straight�察�stiff stems           Of hollyhocks            Against the rocks。 

     So far and still it is that�察�listening�察     �I hear the flowers talking in the 

dawn�察    �And where a sunken basin cuts the lawn�察�Cinctured with iris�察�pale

and glistening�察          �The sudden swish              Of a waking fish。 



                                    A Winter Ride 



     Who   shall     declare   the   joy   of  the   running�   �Who      shall  tell  of  the 

pleasures     of  flight�   �Springing     and   spurning    the  tufts  of   wild   heather�察�

Sweeping�察      �wide´winged�察      �through    the   blue   dome    of   light。  Everything 

mortal     has   moments      immortal�察    �Swift     and   God´gifted�察    �immeasurably 

bright。 

     So     with    the   stretch   of   the   white     road    before    me�察    �Shining 

snowcrystals   rainbowed   by   the   sun�察  �Fields   that   are   white�察  �stained   with 

long�察�cool�察�blue shadows�察         �Strong with the strength of my horse as we run。 

Joy in the touch of the wind and the sunlight�               �Joy�     �With the vigorous 

earth I am one。

     It winds along the face of a cliff          This path which I long to explore�察�

And over   it   dashes   a   waterfall�察   �And the   air   is   full of   the   roar And   the 

thunderous   voice   of   waters   which   sweep   In   a   silver   torrent   over   some 

steep。 

     It clears the path with a mighty bound            And tumbles below and away�察�

And the trees and the bushes which grow in the rocks                    Are wet with its 

jewelled   spray�察  �The   air   is   misty   and   heavy   with   sound�察�And   small�察  �wet 

wildflowers star the ground。 

     Oh�     �The dampness is very good to smell�察               �And the path is soft to 

tread�察�And   beyond   the   fall   it   winds   up   and   on�察 �While   little   streamlets 

thread Their own meandering way down the hill Each singing its own little 

song�察�until 

     I forget that 't is only a pictured path�察       �And I hear the water and wind�察�

And   look   through   the   mist�察  �and   strain   my   eyes     To   see   what   there   is

behind�察  �For   it   must   lead   to   a   happy  land�察 �This   little   path   by   a   waterfall

     Oh�    �To be a flower      Nodding in the sun�察�Bending�察�then upspringing 

As the breezes run�察�Holding up A scent´brimmed cup�察                �Full of summer's 

fragrance to the summer sun。 

     Oh�    �To be a butterfly      Still�察�upon a flower�察�Winking with its painted 

wings�察    �Happy in the hour。 Blossoms hold Mines of gold                Deep within 

the farthest heart of each chaliced flower。 

     Oh�    �To    be   a  cloud   Blowing      through    the  blue�察 �Shadowing      the 

mountains�察     �Rushing   loudly   through   Valleys   deep   Where   torrents   keep 

Always their plunging thunder and their misty arch of blue。 

     Oh�    �To    be  a  wave    Splintering    on   the  sand�察  �Drawing    back�察  �but 

leaving     Lingeringly     the  land。   Rainbow     light  Flashes   bright    Telling 

tales of coral caves half hid in yellow sand。 

     Soon   they   die�察  �the   flowers�察�Insects   live   a   day�察  �Clouds   dissolve   in 

showers�察    �Only waves at play Last forever。 Shall endeavor              Make a sea 

of purpose mightier than we dream to´day�拭�



                                 The Fool Errant 



     The Fool Errant sat by the highway of life          And his gaze wandered up 

and his gaze wandered down�察�A vigorous youth�察�but with no wish to walk�察�

Yet his longing was great for the distant town。 

    He whistled a little frivolous tune         Which he felt to be pulsing with 

ecstasy�察�For he thought that success always followed desire�察             �Such a very 

superlative fool was he。 

    A maiden came by on an ambling mule�察              �Her gown was rose´red and 

her kerchief blue�察�On her lap she carried a basket of eggs。              Thought the
