away察it seems but a fortnight I declare察and yet there have been
things enough happened in the time。 Good gracious when I went
away察 I am sure I had no more idea of being married till I came
back again though I thought it would be very good fun if I was。¨
Her father lifted up his eyes。 Jane was distressed。 Elizabeth
looked expressively at Lydia察 but she察 who never heard nor saw
any thing of which she chose to be insensible察gaily continued察 Oh
mamma察do the people here abouts know I am married to´day拭I

was afraid they might not察 and we overtook William Goulding in
his curricle察 so I was determined he should know it察 and so I let
down the side glass next to him察and took off my glove察and let my
hand just rest upon the window frame察 so that he might see the
ring察and then I bowed and smiled like any thing。¨
Elizabeth could bear it no longer。 She got up察and ran out of the
room察and returned no more察till she heard them passing through
the hall to the dining parlour。 She then joined them soon enough
to see Lydia察with anxious parade察 walk up to her mother¨s right
hand察and hear her say to her eldest sister察 Ah Jane察I take your
place now察 and you must go lower察 because I am a married
woman。¨
It was not to be supposed that time would give Lydia that
embarrassment察from which she had been so wholly free at first。
Her ease and good spirits increased。 She longed to see Mrs。
Philips察 the Lucases察 and all their other neighbours察 and to hear
herself called `Mrs。 Wickham察 by each of them察 and in the mean
time察 she went after dinner to shew her ring and boast of being
married察to Mrs。 Hill and the two housemaids。
`Well察 mamma察 said she察 when they were all returned to the
breakfast room察 and what do you think of my husband拭Is not he
a charming man拭 I am sure my sisters must all envy me。 I only
hope they may have half my good luck。 They must all go to
Brighton。 That is the place to get husbands。 What a pity it is察
mamma察we did not all go。¨
`Very true察and if I had my will察we should。 But my dear Lydia察I
don¨t at all like your going such a way off。 Must it be so拭
`Oh察 lord yes察there is nothing in that。 I shall like it of all
things。 You and papa察and my sisters察must come down and see us。

We shall be at Newcastle all the winter察and I dare say there will
be some balls察and I will take care to get good partners for them
all。¨
`I should like it beyond any thing said her mother。
`And then when you go away察you may leave one or two of my
sisters behind you察 and I dare say I shall get husbands for them
before the winter is over。¨
`I thank you for my share of the favour察 said Elizabeth察 but I do
not particularly like your way of getting husbands。¨
Their visitors were not to remain above ten days with them。 Mr。
Wickham had received his commission before he left London察and
he was to join his regiment at the end of a fortnight。
No one but Mrs。 Bennet察regretted that their stay would be so
short察and she made the most of the time察 by visiting about with
her daughter察 and having very frequent parties at home。 These
parties were acceptable to all察 to avoid a family circle was even
more desirable to such as did think察than such as did not。
Wickham¨s affection for Lydia察 was just what Elizabeth had
expected to find it察not equal to Lydia¨s for him。 She had scarcely
needed her present observation to be satisfied察from the reason of
things察that their elopement had been brought on by the strength
of her love察rather than by his察and she would have wondered why察
without violently caring for her察he chose to elope with her at all察
had she not felt certain that his flight was rendered necessary by
distress of circumstances察and if that were the case察he was not the
young man to resist an opportunity of having a companion。
Lydia was exceedingly fond of him。 He was her dear Wickham
on every occasion察no one was to be put in competition with him。
He did every thing best in the world察and she was sure he would

kill more birds on the first of September察than any body else in the
country。
One morning察 soon after their arrival察 as she was sitting with
her two elder sisters察she said to Elizabeth察
`Lizzy察 I never gave you an account of my wedding察 I believe。
You were not by察when I told mamma察and the others察all about it。
Are not you curious to hear how it was managed拭
`No really察 replied Elizabeth察 I think there cannot be too little
said on the subject。¨
`La You are so strange But I must tell you how it went off。 We
were married察 you know察 at St。 Clement¨s察 because Wickham¨s
lodgings were in that parish。 And it was settled that we should all
be there by eleven o¨clock。 My uncle and aunt and I were to go
together察 and the others were to meet us at the church。 Well察
Monday morning came察and I was in such a fuss I was so afraid
you know that something would happen to put it off察 and then I
should have gone quite distracted。 And there was my aunt察all the
time I was dressing察preaching and talking away just as if she was
reading a sermon。 However察I did not hear above one word in ten察
for I was thinking察 you may suppose察 of my dear Wickham。 I
longed to know whether he would be married in his blue coat。
`Well察and so we breakfasted at ten as usual察I thought it would
never be over察 for察 by the bye察 you are to understand察 that my
uncle and aunt were horrid unpleasant all the time I was with
them。 If you¨ll believe me察I did not once put my foot out of doors察
though I was there a fortnight。 Not one party察 or scheme察 or any
thing。 To be sure London was rather thin察but however the Little
Theatre was open。 Well察 and so just as the carriage came to the
door察my uncle was called away upon business to that horrid man

Mr。 Stone。 And then察 you know察 when once they get together察
there is no end of it。 Well察I was so frightened I did not know what
to do察for my uncle was to give me away察 and if we were beyond
the hour察 we could not be married all day。 But察 luckily察 he came
back again in ten minutes time察and then we all set out。 However察I
recollected afterwards察 that if he had been prevented going察 the
wedding need not be put off察 for Mr。 Darcy might have done as
well。¨
`Mr。 Darcy repeated Elizabeth察in utter amazement。
`Oh察yes he was to come there with Wickham察you know。 But
gracious me I quite forgot I ought not to have said a word about
it。 I promised them so faithfully What will Wickham say拭It was to
be such a secret
`If it was to be secret察 said Jane察 say not another word on the
subject。 You may depend upon my seeking no further。¨
`Oh certainly察 said Elizabeth察 though burning with curiosity察
`we will ask you no questions。¨
`Thank you察 said Lydia察 for if you did察 I should certainly tell
you all察and then Wickham would he angry。¨
On such encouragement to ask察 Elizabeth was forced to put it
out of her power察by running away。
But to live in ignorance on such a point was impossible察 or at
least it was impossible not to try for infor
