Hugh察 who had already reached the turret察 held it more

steadily察 and ascended first察 turning round from time to time to

shed his light downward on the steps。 Mr Haredale following next察

eyed his lowering face with no great favour察 and Hugh察 looking

down on him察returned his glances with interest察as they climbed

the winding stairs。

It terminated in a little ante´room adjoining that from which

they had seen the light。 Mr Haredale entered first察and led the way

through it into the latter chamber察 where he seated himself at a

writing´table from which he had risen when they had rung the

bell。

`Come in察 he said察 beckoning to old John察 who remained

bowing at the door。 `Not you察 friend察 he added hastily to Hugh察

who entered also。 `Willet察why do you bring that fellow here拭

`Why察sir察 returned John察elevating his eyebrows察and lowering

his voice to the tone in which the question had been asked him察

`he¨s a good guard察you see。¨

`Don¨t be too sure of that察 said Mr Haredale察 looking towards

him as he spoke。 `I doubt it。 He has an evil eye。¨

`There¨s no imagination in his eye察 returned Mr Willet察

glancing over his shoulder at the organ in question察 certainly。¨

`There is no good there察be assured察 said Mr Haredale。 `Wait in

that little room察friend察and close the door between us。¨

Hugh shrugged his shoulders察and with a disdainful look察which

showed察 either that he had overheard察 or that he guessed the

purport of their whispering察did as he was told。 When he was shut

out察Mr Haredale turned to John察and bade him go on with what

he had to say察but not to speak too loud察for there were quick ears

yonder。

Thus cautioned察Mr Willet察in an oily whisper察recited all that he

had heard and said that night察 laying particular stress upon his

own sagacity察 upon his great regard for the family察 and upon his

solicitude for their peace of mind and happiness。 The story moved

his auditor much more than he had expected。 Mr Haredale often

changed his attitude察 rose and paced the room察 returned again察

desired him to repeat察as nearly as he could察 the very words that

Solomon had used察 and gave so many other signs of being

disturbed and ill at ease察that even Mr Willet was surprised。

`You did quite right察 he said察at the end of a long conversation察

`to bid them keep this story secret。 It is a foolish fancy on the part

of this weak´brained man察bred in his fears and superstition。 But

Miss Haredale察 though she would know it to be so察 would be

disturbed by it if it reached her ears察 it is too nearly connected

with a subject very painful to us all察to be heard with indifference。

You were most prudent察 and have laid me under a great

obligation。 I thank you very much。¨

This was equal to John¨s most sanguine expectations察 but he

would have preferred Mr Haredale¨s looking at him when he

spoke察as if he really did thank him察to his walking up and down察

speaking by fits and starts察 often stopping with his eyes fixed on

the ground察 moving hurriedly on again察 like one distracted察 and

seeming almost unconscious of what he said or did。

This察however察was his manner察and it was so embarrassing to

John that he sat quite passive for a long time察not knowing what to

do。 At length he rose。 Mr Haredale stared at him for a moment as

though he had quite forgotten his being present察then shook hands

with him察and opened the door。 Hugh察who was察or feigned to be察

fast asleep on the ante´chamber floor察sprang up on their entrance察

and throwing his cloak about him察 grasped his stick and lantern察

and prepared to descend the stairs。

`Stay察 said Mr Haredale。 `Will this man drink拭

`Drink He¨d drink the Thames up察if it was strong enough察sir察

replied John Willet。 `He¨ll have something when he gets home。

He¨s better without it察now察sir。¨

`Nay。 Half the distance is done察 said Hugh。 `What a hard master

you are I shall go home the better for one glassful察 halfway。

Come

As John made no reply察 Mr Haredale brought out a glass of

liquor察and gave it to Hugh察who察as he took it in his hand察threw

part of it upon the floor。

`What do you mean by splashing your drink about a

gentleman¨s house察sir拭 said John。

`I¨m drinking a toast察 Hugh rejoined察 holding the glass above

his head察and fixing his eyes on Mr Haredale¨s face察 a toast to this

house and its master。¨ With that he muttered something to himself察

and drank the rest察 and setting down the glass察 preceded them

without another word。

John was a good deal scandalised by this observance察 but

seeing that Mr Haredale took little heed of what Hugh said or did察

and that his thoughts were otherwise employed察 he offered no

apology察and went in silence down the stairs察across the walk察and

through the garden´gate。 They stopped upon the outer side for

Hugh to hold the light while Mr Haredale locked it on the inner察

and then John saw with wonder as he often afterwards related察

that he was very pale察and that his face had changed so much and

grown so haggard since their entrance察 that he almost seemed

another man。

They were in the open road again察and John Willet was walking

on behind his escort察 as he had come察 thinking very steadily of

                                 Chapter 35

hen John Willet saw that the horsemen wheeled

Wsmartly round察and drew up three abreast in the narrow

road察 waiting for him and his man to join them察 it

occurred to him with unusual precipitation that they must be

highwaymen察 and had Hugh been armed with a blunderbuss察 in

place of his stout cudgel察he would certainly have ordered him to

fire it off at a venture察and would察while the word of command was

obeyed察 have consulted his own personal safety in immediate

flight。 Under the circumstances of disadvantage察 however察 in

terms。 By way of acting up to the spirit and letter of this

instruction察Hugh stepped forward察and flourishing his staff before

the very eyes of the rider nearest to him察demanded roughly what

he and his fellows meant by so nearly galloping over them察 and

why they scoured the king¨s highway at that late hour of night。
