extraordinary sweetness and amiability察had so strong a tendency
to check the conversation and to disconcert all parties but that
excellent lady察 that only a few monosyllables were uttered until
Edward withdrew察 which he presently did察 thanking the lady of
the house a great many times for her condescension察 and
whispering in Dolly¨s ear that he would call on the morrow察in case
there should happen to be an answer to the note!which察indeed察
she knew without his telling察as Barnaby and his friend Grip had
dropped in on the previous night to prepare her for the visit which
was then terminating。
Gabriel察who had attended Edward to the door察came back with
his hands in his pockets察and察after fidgeting about the room in a
very uneasy manner察and casting a great many sidelong looks at
Mrs Varden who with the calmest countenance in the world was
five fathoms deep in the Protestant Manual察inquired of Dolly how
she meant to go。 Dolly supposed by the stage´coach察and looked at
her lady mother察 who finding herself silently appealed to察 dived
down at least another fathom into the Manual察 and became
unconscious of all earthly things。
`Martha!¨ said the locksmith。
`I hear you察Varden察 said his wife察without rising to the surface。
`I am sorry察my dear察you have such an objection to the Maypole
and old John察 for otherways as it¨s a very fine morning察 and
Saturday¨s not a busy day with us察we might have all three gone to
Chigwell in the chaise察and had quite a happy day of it。¨
Mrs Varden immediately closed the Manual察and bursting into
tears察requested to be led upstairs。
`What is the matter now察Martha拭 inquired the locksmith。
To which Martha rejoined察 Oh don¨t speak to me察 and

protested in agony that if anybody had told her so察 she wouldn¨t
have believed it。
`But察 Martha察 said Gabriel察 putting himself in the way as she
was moving off with the aid of Dolly¨s shoulder察 wouldn¨t have
believed what拭 Tell me what¨s wrong now。 Do tell me。 Upon my
soul I don¨t know。 Do you know察 child拭 Damme cried the
locksmith察 plucking at his wig in a kind of frenzy察 nobody does
know察I verily believe察but Miggs
`Miggs察 said Mrs Varden faintly察 and with symptoms of
approaching incoherence察 is attached to me察and that is sufficient
to draw down hatred upon her in this house。 She is a comfort to
me察whatever she may be to others。¨
`She¨s no comfort to me察 cried Gabriel察made bold by despair。
`She¨s the misery of my life。 She¨s all the plagues of Egypt in one。¨
`She¨s considered so察I have no doubt察 said Mrs Varden。 `I was
prepared for that察 it¨s natural察 it¨s of a piece with the rest。 When
you taunt me as you do to my face察 how can I wonder that you
taunt her behind her back And here the incoherence coming on
very strong察 Mrs Varden wept察 and laughed察 and sobbed察 and
shivered察and hiccoughed察and choked察and said she knew it was
very foolish but she couldn¨t help it察and that when she was dead
and gone察perhaps they would be sorry for it!which really under
the circumstances did not appear quite so probable as she seemed
to think!with a great deal more to the same effect。 In a word察she
passed with great decency through all the ceremonies incidental
to such occasions察and being supported upstairs察was deposited in
a highly spasmodic state on her own bed察 where Miss Miggs
shortly afterwards flung herself upon the body。
The philosophy of all this was察that Mrs Varden wanted to go to

Chigwell察 that she did not want to make any concession or
explanation察 that she would only go on being implored and
entreated so to do察 and that she would accept no other terms。
Accordingly察after a vast amount of moaning and crying upstairs察
and much damping of foreheads察 and vinegaring of temples察and
hartshorning of noses察 and so forth察 and after most pathetic
adjurations from Miggs察 assisted by warm brandy´and´water not
over´weak察and divers other cordials察also of a stimulating quality察
administered at first in teaspoonfuls and afterwards in increasing
doses察 and of which Miss Miggs herself partook as a preventive
measure for fainting is infectious察 after all these remedies察 and
many more too numerous to mention察 but not to take察 had been
applied察 and many verbal consolations察 moral察 religious察 and
miscellaneous察 had been super´added thereto察 the locksmith
humbled himself察and the end was gained。
`If it¨s only for the sake of peace and quietness察 father察 said
Dolly察urging him to go upstairs。
`Oh察Doll察Doll察 said her good´natured father。 `If you ever have a
husband of your own!¨
Dolly glanced at the glass。
`!Well察 when you have察 said the locksmith察 never faint察 my
darling。 More domestic unhappiness has come of easy fainting察
Doll察 than from all the greater passions put together。 Remember
that察my dear察if you would be really happy察which you never can
be察 if your husband isn¨t。 And a word in your ear察 my precious。
Never have a Miggs about you
With this advice he kissed his blooming daughter on the cheek察
and slowly repaired to Mrs Varden¨s room察where that lady察lying
all pale and languid on her couch察 was refreshing herself with a

sight of her last new bonnet察which Miggs察as a means of calming
her scattered spirits察 displayed to the best advantage at her
bedside。
`Here¨s master察 mim察 said Miggs。 `Oh察 what a happiness it is
when man and wife come round again Oh gracious察to think that
him and her should ever have a word together In the energy of
these sentiments察 which were uttered as an apostrophe to the
Heavens in general察Miss Miggs perched the bonnet on the top of
her own head察and folding her hands察turned on her tears。
`I can¨t help it察 cried Miggs。 `I couldn¨t察if I was to be drownded
in ¨em。 She has such a forgiving spirit She¨ll forget all that has
passed察and go along with you察sir!Oh察if it was to the world¨s end察
she¨d go along with you。¨
Mrs Varden with a faint smile gently reproved her attendant for
this enthusiasm察and reminded her at the same time that she was
far too unwell to venture out that day。
`Oh no察you¨re not察mim察indeed you¨re not察 said Miggs察 I repeal
to master察master knows you¨re not察mim。 The hair察and motion of
the shay察will do you good察mim察and you must not give way察you
must not raly。 She must keep up察 mustn¨t she察 sir察 for all out
sakes拭I was a telling her that察just now。 She must remember us察
even if she forgets herself。 Master will persuade you察 mim察 I¨m
sure。 There¨s Miss Dolly¨s a´going you know察and master察and you察
and all so happy and so comfortable。 Oh cried Miggs察turning on
the tears again察previous to quitting the room in great emotion察 I
never see such a blessed one as she is for the forgiveness of her
spirit察I never察n
