retreated faster than they went察and came straight back to town。

There being now a great many parties in the streets察each went

to work according to its humour察and a dozen houses were quickly

justices察and four in Holborn!one of the greatest thoroughfares in

until they went out of themselves察 for the people cut the engine

one house near Moorfields察they found in one of the rooms some

canary birds in cages察and these they cast into the fire alive。 The

poor little creatures screamed察it was said察like infants察when they

were flung upon the blaze察and one man was so touched that he

tried in vain to save them察 which roused the indignation of the

crowd察and nearly cost him his life。

                                Chapter 67

hen darkness broke away and morning began to dawn察

Wthe town wore a strange aspect indeed。

Sleep had hardly been thought of all night。 The

general alarm was so apparent in the faces of the inhabitants察and

its expression was so aggravated by want of rest few persons察with

any property to lose察having dared go to bed since Monday察that a

stranger coming into the streets would have supposed some

mortal pest or plague to have been raging。 In place of the usual

cheerfulness and animation of morning察everything was dead and

silent。 The shops remained closed察 offices and warehouses were

shut察 the coach and chair stands were deserted察 no carts or

waggons rumbled through the slowly waking streets察 the early

cries were all hushed察a universal gloom prevailed。 Great numbers

of people were out察even at daybreak察but they flitted to and fro as

though they shrank from the sound of their own footsteps察 the

public ways were haunted rather than frequented察and round the

smoking ruins people stood apart from one another and in silence察

not venturing to condemn the rioters察or to be supposed to do so察

even in whispers。

At the Lord President¨s in Piccadilly察at Lambeth Palace察at the

Lord Chancellor¨s in Great Ormond Street察in the Royal Exchange察

every chamber fronting the streets near Westminster Hall and the

Houses of Parliament察 parties of soldiers were posted before

daylight。 A body of Horse Guards paraded Palace Yard察 an

encampment was formed in the Park察where fifteen hundred men

and five battalions of Militia were under arms察 the Tower was

fortified察 the drawbridges were raised察 the cannon loaded and

pointed察and two regiments of artillery busied in strengthening the

fortress and preparing it for defence。 A numerous detachment of

soldiers were stationed to keep guard at the New River Head察

which the people had threatened to attack察and where察it was said察

they meant to cut off the main´pipes察 so that there might be no
