whole wide universe could not afford a refuge
While he rushed up and down察not knowing where to turn察and
while he lay crouching there察 the work went briskly on indeed。
When they left the Maypole察the rioters formed into a solid body察
and advanced at a quick pace towards the Warren。 Rumour of
their approach having gone before察 they found the garden´doors
fast closed察 the windows made secure察and the house profoundly
dark此not a light being visible in any portion of the building。 After
some fruitless ringing at the bells察and beating at the iron gates察
they drew off a few paces to reconnoitre察 and confer upon the
course it would be best to take。
Very little conference was needed察when all were bent upon one
desperate purpose察 infuriated with liquor察 and flushed with
successful riot。 The word being given to surround the house察some
climbed the gates察or dropped into the shallow trench and scaled
the garden wall察while others pulled down the solid iron fence察and
while they made a breach to enter by察made deadly weapons of the
bars。 The house being completely encircled察 a small number of
men were despatched to break open a tool´shed in the garden察and
during their absence on this errand察 the remainder contented
themselves with knocking violently at the doors察 and calling to
those within察to come down and open them on peril of their lives。
No answer being returned to this repeated summons察and the
detachment who had been sent away察 coming back with an
accession of pickaxes察 spades察 and hoes察 they察together with
those who had such arms already察or carried as many did axes察
poles察and crowbars察struggled into the foremost rank察 ready to
beset the doors and windows。 They had not at this time more than
a dozen lighted torches among them察but when these preparations

were completed察 flaming links were distributed and passed from
hand to hand with such rapidity察that察in a minute¨s time察at least
two´thirds of the whole roaring mass bore察each man in his hand察a
blazing brand。 Whirling these about their heads they raised a loud
shout察and fell to work upon the doors and windows。
Amidst the clattering of heavy blows察 the rattling of broken
glass察 the cries and execrations of the mob察 and all the din and
turmoil of the scene察 Hugh and his friends kept together at the
turret´door where Mr Haredale had last admitted him and old
John Willet察and spent their united force on that。 It was a strong
old oaken door察guarded by good bolts and a heavy bar察but it soon
went crashing in upon the narrow stairs behind察and made察 as it
were察a platform to facilitate their tearing up into the rooms above。
Almost at the same moment察a dozen other points were forced察and
at every one the crowd poured in like water。
A few armed servant´men were posted in the hall察and when the
rioters forced an entrance there察 they fired some half´a´dozen
shots。 But these taking no effect察and the concourse coming on like
an army of devils察they only thought of consulting their own safety察
and retreated察 echoing their assailants¨ cries察 and hoping in the
confusion to be taken for rioters themselves察 in which stratagem
they succeeded察with the exception of one old man who was never
heard of again察 and was said to have had his brains beaten out
with an iron bar one of his fellows reported that he had seen the
old man fall察and to have been afterwards burnt in the flames。
The besiegers being now in complete possession of the house察
spread themselves over it from garret to cellar察 and plied their
demon labours fiercely。 While some small parties kindled bonfires
underneath the windows察 others broke up the furniture and cast

the fragments down to feed the flames below察where the apertures
in the wall windows no longer were large enough察they threw out
tables察chests of drawers察beds察mirrors察pictures察and flung them
whole into the fire察 while every fresh addition to the blazing
masses was received with shouts察 and howls察 and yells察 which
added new and dismal terrors to the conflagration。 Those who had
axes and had spent their fury on the movables察chopped and tore
down the doors and window frames察broke up the flooring察hewed
away the rafters察 and buried men who lingered in the upper
rooms察in heaps of ruins。 Some searched the drawers察the chests察
the boxes察writing´desks察and closets察for jewels察plate察and money察
while others察 less mindful of gain and more mad for destruction察
cast their whole contents into the courtyard without examination察
and called to those below察 to heap them on the blaze。 Men who
had been into the cellars察and had staved the casks察rushed to and
fro stark mad察setting fire to all they saw!often to the dresses of
their own friends!and kindling the building in so many parts that
some had no time for escape察and were seen察with drooping hands
and blackened faces察 hanging senseless on the window´sills to
which they had crawled察 until they were sucked and drawn into
the burning gulf。 The more the fire crackled and raged察the wilder
and more cruel the men grew察as though moving in that element
they became fiends察 and changed their earthly nature for the
qualities that give delight in hell。
The burning pile察 revealing rooms and passages red hot察
through gaps made in the crumbling walls察the tributary fires that
licked the outer bricks and stones察with their long forked tongues察
and ran up to meet the glowing mass within察 the shining of the
flames upon the villains who looked on and fed them察the roaring

of the angry blaze察so bright and high that it seemed in its rapacity
to have swallowed up the very smoke察 the living flakes the wind
bore rapidly away and hurried on with察like a storm of fiery snow察
the noiseless breaking of great beams of wood察 which fell like
feathers on the heap of ashes察 and crumbled in the very act to
sparks and powder察 the lurid tinge that overspread the sky察 and
the darkness察very deep by contrast察which prevailed around察the
exposure to the coarse察 common gaze察 of every little nook which
usages of home had made a sacred place察and the destruction by
rude hands of every little household favourite which old
associations made a dear and precious thing此 all this taking
place!not among pitying looks and friendly murmurs of
compassion察 but brutal shouts and exultations察 which seemed to
make the very rats who stood by the old house too long察creatures
with some claim upon the pity and regard of those its roof had
sheltered此combined to form a scene never to be forgotten by
those who saw it and were not actors in the work察so long as life
endured。
And who were they拭The alarm´bell rang!and it was pulled by
no faint or hesitating hands!for a long time察but not a soul was
seen。 Some of the insurgents said that when it ceased察they heard
the shrieks of women察and saw some garments fluttering in the air察
as a party of men bore away no unresisting burdens。 No one could
say that this was true or false察in such an uproar察but where was
Hugh拭 Who among them had seen him察 since the forcing of the
doors拭The cry spread through the body。 Where was Hugh
`Here he hoarsely cried察 appearing from the darkness察 out of
breath察and blackened with the
