about him拭 Did I say he was worth a dozen察 when you doubted

him拭

Mr Dennis rolled lazily over upon his breast察 and resting his

chin upon his hand in imitation of the attitude in which Hugh lay察

said察as he too looked towards the door此

`Ay察 ay察 you knew him察 brother察 you knew him。 But who¨d

suppose to look at that chap now察that he could be the man he is

Isn¨t it a thousand cruel pities察brother察that instead of taking his

nat¨ral rest and qualifying himself for further exertions in this here

honourable cause察he should be playing at soldiers like a boy拭And

his cleanliness too said Mr Dennis察who certainly had no reason

to entertain a fellow feeling with anybody who was particular on

that score察 what weaknesses he¨s guilty of察 with respect to his

cleanliness At five o¨clock this morning察 there he was at the

pump察though any one would think he had gone through enough察

the day before yesterday察to be pretty fast asleep at that time。 But

no!when I woke for a minute or two察there he was at the pump察

and if you¨d seen him sticking them peacock¨s feathers into his hat

when he¨d done washing!ah I¨m sorry he¨s such a imperfect

character察but the best on us is incomplete in some pint of view or

another。¨

The subject of this dialogue and of these concluding remarks察

which were uttered in a tone of philosophical meditation察was察as

the reader will have divined察no other than Barnaby察who察with his

flag in hand察 stood sentry in the little patch of sunlight at the

distant door察or walked to and fro outside察singing softly to himself察

and keeping time to the music of some clear church bells。 Whether

                                Barnaby Rudge 560

he stood still察leaning with both hands on the flagstaff察or察bearing

it upon his shoulder察 paced slowly up and down察 the careful

arrangement of his poor dress察 and his erect and lofty bearing察

showed how high a sense he had of the great importance of his

trust察and how happy and how proud it made him。 To Hugh and

his companion察who lay in a dark corner of the gloomy shed察 he察

and the sunlight察 and the peaceful Sabbath sound to which he

made response察seemed like a bright picture framed by the door察

and set off by the stable¨s blackness。 The whole formed such a

contrast to themselves察 as they lay wallowing察 like some obscene

animals察 in their squalor and wickedness on the two heaps of

straw察 that for a few moments they looked on without speaking察

and felt almost ashamed。

`Ah said Hugh at length察 carrying it off with a laugh此 He¨s a

rare fellow is Barnaby察and can do more察with less rest察or meat察or

drink察than any of us。 As to his soldiering察I put him on duty there。¨

`Then there was a object in it察and a proper good one too察I¨ll be

sworn察 retorted Dennis with a broad grin察and an oath of the same

quality。 `What was it察brother拭

`Why察you see察 said Hugh察crawling a little nearer to him察 that

our noble captain yonder察 came in yesterday morning rather the

worse for liquor察and was!like you and me!ditto last night。¨

Dennis looked to where Simon Tappertit lay coiled upon a truss

of hay察snoring profoundly察and nodded。

`And our noble captain察 continued Hugh with another laugh察

`our noble captain and I察 have planned for to´morrow a roaring

expedition察with good profit in it。¨

`Again the Papists拭 asked Dennis察rubbing his hands。

of us察and I for one察owe a good heavy grudge to。¨

`Not Muster Gashford¨s friend that he spoke to us about in my

house察eh拭 said Dennis察brimful of pleasant expectation。

    `The same man察 said Hugh。

`That¨s your sort察 cried Mr Dennis察 gaily shaking hands with

him察 that¨s the kind of game。 Let¨s have revenges and injuries察and

all that察and we shall get on twice as fast。 Now you talk察indeed

`Ha ha ha The captain察 added Hugh察 has thoughts of carrying

off a woman in the bustle察and!ha ha ha and so have I

Mr Dennis received this part of the scheme with a wry face察

observing that as a general principle he objected to women

altogether察 as being unsafe and slippery persons on whom there

was no calculating with any certainty察and who were never in the

same mind for four´and´twenty hours at a stretch。 He might have

expatiated on this suggestive theme at much greater length察 but

that it occurred to him to ask what connection existed between the

proposed expedition and Barnaby¨s being posted at the stable´

door as sentry察to which Hugh cautiously replied in these words此

`Why察 the people we mean to visit察 were friends of his察 once

upon a time察and I know that much of him to feel pretty sure that if

he thought we were going to do them any harm察he¨d be no friend

to our side察 but would lend a ready hand to the other。 So I¨ve

persuaded him for I know him of old that Lord George has

picked him out to guard this place to´morrow while we¨re away察

and that it¨s a great honour!and so he¨s on duty now察 and as

proud of it as if he was a general。 Ha ha What do you say to me for

a careful man as well as a devil of a one拭

Mr Dennis exhausted himself in compliments察and then added察

    `But about the expedition itself!¨

`About that察 said Hugh察 you shall hear all particulars from me

and the great captain conjointly and both together!for see察 he¨s

waking up。 Rouse yourself察lion´heart。 Ha ha Put a good face upon

it察and drink again。 Another hair of the dog that bit you察captain

Call for drink There¨s enough of gold and silver cups and

candlesticks buried underneath my bed察 he added察 rolling back

the straw察and pointing to where the ground was newly turned察 to

pay for it察if it was a score of casks full。 Drink察captain

Mr Tappertit received these jovial promptings with a very bad

grace察being much the worse察both in mind and body察for his two

nights of debauch察 and but indifferently able to stand upon his

legs。 With Hugh¨s assistance察however察he contrived to stagger to

the pump察 and having refreshed himself with an abundant

draught of cold water察 and a copious shower of the same

refreshing liquid on his head and face察he ordered some rum and

milk to be served察 and upon that innocent beverage and some

biscuits and cheese made a pretty hearty meal。 That done察 he

disposed himself in an easy attitude on the ground beside his two

companions who were carousing after their own tastes察 and

proceeded to enlighten Mr Dennis in reference to to´morrow¨s

project。

That their conversation was an interesting one察 was rendered

manifest by its length察and by the close attention of all three。 That

it was not of an oppressively grave character察but was enlivened by

various pleasantries arising out of the subject察was clear from their

loud and frequent roars of laughter察which startled Barnaby on his

post察 and made him wonder at their levity。 But he was not

summoned to join them察 until they had eaten察 and drunk察 and

slept察 and talked together for some hours察 not察 indeed察 until the
