take this piece of paper。 It¨s a protection察ma¨am。 You may need it。¨
With these words he held out at arm¨s length察a dirty察crumpled
scrap of writing。 The locksmith took it from him察 opened it察 and
read as follows此

no injury to the property of any true Protestant。 I am well assured
that the proprietor of this house is a staunch and worthy friend to
the cause。
GEORGE GORDON。¨
`What¨s this said the locksmith察with an altered face。
`Something that¨ll do you good service察young feller察 replied his
journeyman察 as you¨ll find。 Keep that safe察and where you can lay
your hand upon it in an instant。 And chalk ^No Popery ̄ on your
door to´morrow night察and for a week to come!that¨s all。¨
`This is a genuine document察 said the locksmith察 I know察for I
have seen the hand before。 What threat does it imply拭What devil
is abroad拭
`A fiery devil察 retorted Sim察 a flaming察furious devil。 Don¨t you
put yourself in its way察or you¨re done for察my buck。 Be warned in
time察G。 Varden。 Farewell
But here the two women threw themselves in his way!
especially Miss Miggs察 who fell upon him with such fervour that
she pinned him against the wall!and conjured him in moving
words not to go forth till he was sober察to listen to reason察to think
of it察to take some rest察and then determine。
`I tell you察 said Mr Tappertit察 that my mind is made up。 My
bleeding country calls me and I go Miggs察if you don¨t get out of
the way察I¨ll pinch you。¨
Miss Miggs察 still clinging to the rebel察 screamed once
vociferously!but whether in the distraction of her mind察 or
because of his having executed his threat察is uncertain。
`Release me察 said Simon察 struggling to free himself from her
chaste察 but spider´like embrace。 `Let me go I have made

arrangements for you in an altered state of society察 and mean to
provide for you comfortably in life!there Will that satisfy you拭
`Oh Simmun cried Miss Miggs。 `Oh my blessed Simmun Oh
mim what are my feelings at this conflicting moment
Of a rather turbulent description察 it would seem察 for her
nightcap had been knocked off in the scuffle察and she was on her
knees upon the floor察 making a strange revelation of blue and
yellow curl´papers察straggling locks of hair察tags of staylaces察 and
strings of it¨s impossible to say what察panting for breath察clasping
her hands察 turning her eyes upwards察 shedding abundance of
tears察and exhibiting various other symptoms of the acutest mental
suffering。
`I leave察 said Simon察 turning to his master察 with an utter
disregard of Miggs¨s maidenly affliction察 a box of things upstairs。
Do what you like with ¨em。 I don¨t want ¨em。 I¨m never coming
back here察any more。 Provide yourself察sir察with a journeyman察I¨m
my country¨s journeyman察 henceforward that¨s my line of
business。¨
`Be what you like in two hours¨ time察 but now go up to bed察
returned the locksmith察planting himself in the doorway。 `Do you
hear me拭Go to bed
`I hear you察 and defy you察 Varden察 rejoined Simon Tappertit。
`This night察sir察I have been in the country察planning an expedition
which shall fill your bell´hanging soul with wonder and dismay。
The plot demands my utmost energy。 Let me pass
`I¨ll knock you down if you come near the door察 replied the
locksmith。 `You had better go to bed
Simon made no answer察but gathering himself up as straight as
he could察 plunged head foremost at his old master察 and the two

went driving out into the workshop together察 plying their hands
and feet so briskly that they looked like half´a´dozen察while Miggs
and Mrs Varden screamed for twelve。
It would have been easy for Varden to knock his old ¨prentice
down察and bind him hand and foot察but as he was loth to hurt him
in his then defenceless state察 he contented himself with parrying
his blows when he could察taking them in perfect good part when
he could not察 and keeping between him and the door察 until a
favourable opportunity should present itself for forcing him to
retreat up´stairs察and shutting him up in his own room。 But察in the
goodness of his heart察he calculated too much upon his adversary¨s
weakness察and forgot that drunken men who have lost the power
of walking steadily察 can often run。 Watching his time察 Simon
Tappertit made a cunning show of falling back察 staggered
unexpectedly forward察 brushed past him察 opened the door he
knew the trick of that lock well察and darted down the street like a
mad dog。 The locksmith paused for a moment in the excess of his
astonishment察and then gave chase。
It was an excellent season for a run察for at that silent hour the
streets were deserted察the air was cool察and the flying figure before
him distinctly visible at a great distance察 as it sped away察 with a
long gaunt shadow following at its heels。 But the short´winded
locksmith had no chance against a man of Sim¨s youth and spare
figure察 though the day had been when he could have run him
down in no time。 The space between them rapidly increased察and
as the rays of the rising sun streamed upon Simon in the act of
turning a distant corner察Gabriel Varden was fain to give up察and
sit down on a doorstep to fetch his breath。 Simon meanwhile察
without once stopping察fled at the same degree of swiftness to The

Boot察 where察 as he well knew察 some of his company were lying察
and at which respectable hostelry!for he had already acquired
the distinction of being in great peril of the law!a friendly watch
had been expecting him all night察and was even now on the look´
out for his coming。
`Go thy ways察Sim察go thy ways察 said the locksmith察as soon as
he could speak。 `I have done my best for thee察poor lad察and would
have saved thee察but the rope is round thy neck察I fear。¨
So saying察 and shaking his head in a very sorrowful and
disconsolate manner察he turned back察and soon re´entered his own
house察 where Mrs Varden and the faithful Miggs had been
anxiously expecting his return。
Now Mrs Varden and by consequence Miss Miggs likewise
was impressed with a secret misgiving that she had done wrong察
that she had察to the utmost of her small means察aided and abetted
the growth of disturbances察the end of which it was impossible to
foresee察 that she had led remotely to the scene which had just
passed察 and that the locksmith¨s time for triumph and reproach
had now arrived indeed。 And so strongly did Mrs Varden feel this察
and so crestfallen was she in consequence察that while her husband
was pursuing their lost journeyman察she secreted under her chair
the little red´brick dwelling´house with the yellow roof察 lest it
should furnish new occasion for reference to the painful theme察
and now hid the same still more察with the
