his head meanwhile察 as Hugh察 with a scowling visage察 whispered
in his ear。
The soldier came spurring on察 making his horse rear as the
people pressed about him察cutting at the hands of those who would
have grasped his rein and forced his charger back察and waving to
his comrades to follow!and still Barnaby察 without retreating an

inch察waited for his coming。 Some called to him to fly察 and some
were in the very act of closing round him察 to prevent his being
taken察when the pole swept into the air above the people¨s heads察
and the man¨s saddle was empty in an instant。
Then察 he and Hugh turned and fled察 the crowd opening to let
them pass察and closing up again so quickly that there was no clue
to the course they had taken。 Panting for breath察 hot察 dusty察 and
exhausted with fatigue察 they reached the riverside in safety察 and
getting into a boat with all despatch were soon out of any
immediate danger。
As they glided down the river察 they plainly heard the people
cheering察 and supposing they might have forced the soldiers to
retreat察lay upon their oars for a few minutes察uncertain whether
to return or not。 But the crowd passing along Westminster Bridge察
soon assured them that the populace were dispersing察 and Hugh
rightly guessed from this察that they had cheered the magistrate for
offering to dismiss the military on condition of their immediate
departure to their several homes察and that he and Barnaby were
better where they were。 He advised察 therefore察 that they should
proceed to Blackfriars察and察going ashore at the bridge察make the
best of their way to The Boot察 where there was not only good
entertainment and safe lodging察but where they would certainly be
joined by many of their late companions。 Barnaby assenting察they
decided on this course of action察 and pulled for Blackfriars
accordingly。
They landed at a critical time察and fortunately for themselves at
the right moment。 For察coming into Fleet Street察they found it in
an unusual stir察and inquiring the cause察were told that a body of
Horse Guards had just galloped past察and that they were escorting

some rioters whom they had made prisoners察 to Newgate for
safety。 Not at all ill´pleased to have so narrowly escaped the
cavalcade察they lost no more time in asking questions察but hurried
to The Boot with as much speed as Hugh considered it prudent to
make察 without appearing singular or attracting an inconvenient
share of public notice。

hey were among the first to reach the tavern察but they had
not been there many minutes察when several groups of men
T
who had formed part of the crowd察 came straggling in。
Among them were Simon Tappertit and Mr Dennis察both of whom察
but especially the latter察greeted Barnaby with the utmost warmth察
and paid him many compliments on the prowess he had shown。
`Which察 said Dennis察with an oath察as he rested his bludgeon in
a corner with his hat upon it察and took his seat at the same table
with them察 it does me good to think of。 There was a opportunity
But it led to nothing。 For my part察 I don¨t know what would。
There¨s no spirit among the people in these here times。 Bring
something to eat and drink here。 I¨m disgusted with humanity。¨
`On what account拭 asked Mr Tappertit察 who had been
quenching his fiery face in a half´gallon can。 `Don¨t you consider
this a good beginning察mister拭
`Give me security that it an¨t a ending察 rejoined the hangman。
`When that soldier went down察we might have made London ours察
but no察we stand察and gape察and look on!the justice I wish he
had had a bullet in each eye察as he would have had察if we¨d gone to
work my way says察 My lads察 if you¨ll give me your word to
disperse察I¨ll order off the military察院our people sets up a hurrah察
throws up the game with the winning cards in their hands察 and
skulks away like a pack of tame curs as they are。 Ah察 said the
hangman察 in a tone of deep disgust察 it makes me blush for my
feller creeturs。 I wish I had been born a ox察I do
`You¨d have been quite as agreeable a character if you had
been察 I think察 returned Simon Tappertit察 going out in a lofty

manner。
`Don¨t be too sure of that察 rejoined the hangman察 calling after
him察 if I was a horned animal at the present moment察 with the
smallest grain of sense察 I¨d toss every man in this company察
excepting them two察 meaning Hugh and Barnaby察 for his manner
of conducting himself this day。¨
With which mournful review of their proceedings察 Mr Dennis
sought consolation in cold boiled beef and beer察but without at all
relaxing the grim and dissatisfied expression of his face察the gloom
of which was rather deepened than dissipated by their grateful
influence。
The company who were thus libelled might have retaliated by
strong words察if not by blows察but they were dispirited and worn
out。 The greater part of them had fasted since morning察 all had
suffered extremely from the excessive heat察and between the day¨s
shouting察 exertion察 and excitement察 many had quite lost their
voices察and so much of their strength that they could hardly stand。
Then they were uncertain what to do next察 fearful of the
consequences of what they had done already察 and sensible that
after all they had carried no point察 but had indeed left matters
worse than they had found them。 Of those who had come to The
Boot察 many dropped off within an hour察 such of them as were
really honest and sincere察never察after the morning¨s experience察to
return察or to hold any communication with their late companions。
Others remained but to refresh themselves察and then went home
desponding察 others who had theretofore been regular in their
attendance察avoided the place altogether。 The half´dozen prisoners
whom the Guards had taken察were magnified by report into half´a´
hundred at least察 and their friends察 being faint and sober察 so

slackened in their energy察 and so drooped beneath these
dispiriting influences察that by eight o¨clock in the evening察Dennis察
Hugh察 and Barnaby察 were left alone。 Even they were fast asleep
upon the benches察when Gashford¨s entrance roused them。
`Oh you are here then拭 said the Secretary。 `Dear me
`Why察where should we be察Muster Gashford Dennis rejoined
as he rose into a sitting posture。
`Oh nowhere察 nowhere察 he returned with excessive mildness。
`The streets are filled with blue cockades。 I rather thought you
might have been among them。 I am glad you are not。¨
`You have orders for us察master察then拭 said Hugh。
`Oh dear察 no。 Not I。 No orders察 my good fellow。 What orders
should I have拭You are not in my service。¨
`Muster Gashford察 remonstrated
