fighting a gnat拭Here察out of my way察you atom of nothing I'll blow you
to the other end of the world。;
But though the Lion puffed his cheeks until they were like great
bellows察and then blew with all his might察he could not disturb the little
Gnat's hold on the swaying grass´blade。
;You'll blow all your whiskers away if you are not careful察─he said察
with a laugh;but you won't move me。 And if you dare leave this spot
without fighting me察I'll tell all the beasts of the forest that you are afraid
of me察and they'll make ME King。;
;Ho察 ho ─ roared the Lion。 ;Very well察 since you will fight察 let it be
so。;
;You agree to the conditions察 then拭 The one who conquers shall be
King拭─
;Oh察 certainly察─ laughed the Lion察 for he expected an easy victory。
;Are you ready拭─
;Quite ready。;
;ThenGO ─roared the Lion。
And with that he sprang forward with open jaws察 thinking he could
easily swallow a million gnats。 But just as the great jaws were about to
close upon the blade of grass whereto the Gnat clung察what should happen

;O my poor nose察my nose察my nose ─the Lion began to moan。 ;Come

You're King of the Forest察you're King察you're Kingonly come down。 My

So at last the Gnat flew out from the Lion's nostril and went back to
his waving grass´ blade察while the Lion slunk away into the depths of the
forest with his tail between his legsBEATEN察and by a tiny Gnat
;What a fine fellow am I察 to be sure ─ exclaimed the Gnat察 aa he
proudly plumed his wings。 ;I've beaten a liona LION Dear me察I ought
to have been King long ago察I'm so clever察so big察so strongOH ─
The Gnat's frightened cry was caused by finding himself entangled in
some silky sort of threads。 While gloating over his victory察the wind had
risen察 and his grass´blade had swayed violently to and fro unnoticed by
him。 A stronger gust than usual had bent the blade downward close to the
ground察 and then something caught it and held it fast and with it the
victorious Gnat。 Oh察the desperate struggles he made to get free Alas he
became more entangled than ever。 You can guess what it wasa spider's
web察hung out from the over´ hanging branch of a tree。 Thenflipperty´

cunning Father Spider and quickly gobbled up the little Gnat for his
supper察and that was the end of him。

THE CAT AND THE PARROT
Once there was a cat察and a parrot。 And they had agreed to ask each
other to dinner察turn and turn about此first the cat should ask the parrot察then
the parrot should invite the cat察and so on。 It was the cat's turn first。
Now the cat was very mean。 He provided nothing at all for dinner

except a pint of milk察a little slice of fish察and a biscuit。 The parrot was too
polite to complain察but he did not have a very good time。
When it was his turn to invite the cat察he cooked a fine dinner。 He had
a roast of meat察a pot of tea察a basket of fruit察and察best of all察he baked a
whole clothes´basketful of little cakeslittle察brown察crispy察spicy cakes
Oh察I should say as many as five hundred。 And he put four hundred and
ninety´eight of the cakes before the cat察keeping only two for himself。
Well察the cat ate the roast察and drank the tea察and sucked the fruit察and
then he began on the pile of cakes。 He ate all the four hundred and ninety´
eight cakes察and then he looked round and said此
;I'm hungry察haven't you anything to eat拭─
;Why察─said the parrot察 here are my two cakes察if you want them拭─
The cat ate up the two cakes察and then he licked his chops and said察 I
am beginning to get an appetite察have you anything to eat拭─
;Well察really察─said the parrot察who was now rather angry察 I don't see
anything more察unless you wish to eat me ─He thought the cat would be
ashamed when he heard thatbut the cat just looked at him and licked his
chops againand slip slop gobble down his throat went the parrot
Then the cat started down the street。 An old woman was standing by察
and she had seen the whole thing察and she was shocked that the cat should
eat his friend。 ;Why察 cat ─ she said察 how dreadful of you to eat your
friend the parrot ─
;Parrot察 indeed ─ said the cat。 ;What's a parrot to meI've a great
mind to eat you察too。; Andbefore you could say ;Jack Robinson;slip
slop gobble down went the old woman
Then the cat started down the road again察walking like this察because he
felt so fine。 Pretty soon he met a man driving a donkey。 The man was
beating the donkey察to hurry him up察and when he saw the cat he said察 Get
out of my way察cat察I'm in a hurry and my donkey might tread on you。;
;Donkey察 indeed ─ said the cat察 much I care for a donkey I have
eaten five hundred cakes察I've eaten my friend the parrot察I've eaten an old
womanwhat's to hinder my eating a miserable man and a donkey拭─
And slip slop gobble down went the old man and the donkey。
Then the cat walked on down the road察jauntily察like this。 After a little察

he met a procession察coming that way。 The king was at the head察walking
proudly with his newly married bride察and behind him were his soldiers察
marching察 and behind them were ever and ever so many elephants察
walking two by two。 The king felt very kind to everybody察because he had
just been married察and he said to the cat察 Get out of my way察pussy察get
out of my way察my elephants might hurt you。;
;Hurt me ─said the cat察shaking his fat sides。 ;Ho察ho I've eaten five
hundred cakes察I've eaten my friend the parrot察I've eaten an old woman察
I've eaten a man and a donkey察 what's to hinder my eating a beggarly
king拭─
And slip slop gobble down went the king察 down went the queen察
down went the soldiersand down went all the elephants
Then the cat went on察more slowly察he had really had enough to eat察
now。 But a little farther on he met two land´crabs察scuttling along in the
dust。 ;Get out of our way察pussy察─they squeaked。
;Ho察ho ho ─cried the cat in a terrible voice。 ;I've eaten five hundred
cakes察I've eaten my friend the parrot察I've eaten an old woman察a man with
a donkey察a king察a queen察his men´at´arms察and all his elephants察and now
I'll eat you too。;
And slip slop gobble down went the two land´crabs。
When the land´crabs got down inside察 they began to look around。 It
was very dark察but they could see the poor king sitting in a corner with his
bride on his arm察 she had fainted。 Near them were the men´at´arms察
treading on one another's toes察 and the elephants察 still trying to form in
twosbut they couldn't察 because there was not room。 In the opposite
corner sat the old woman察and near her stood the man and his donkey。 But
in the other corner was a great pile of cakes察 and by them perched the
parrot察his feathers all drooping。
Let's get to work ─said the land´crabs。 And察snip
