shouted察 Remember thou art mortal ┌察 before the eyes of the British

Mark well the spot A hundred years ago Albion Street where comic
Power dwelt察 Milesia's darling son´ ´Albion Street was a desert。 The
square of Connaught was without its penultimate察and察strictly speaking察
NAUGHT。 The Edgware Road was then a road察 'tis true察 with tinkling
waggons passing now and then察 and fragrant walls of snowy hawthorn
blossoms。 The ploughman whistled over Nutford Place察 down the green
solitudes of Sovereign Street the merry milkmaid led the lowing kine。
Here察 then察 in the midst of green fields and sweet airbefore ever
omnibuses were察 and when Pineapple Turnpike and Terrace were alike
unknownhere stood Tyburn此and on the road towards it察perhaps to enjoy
the prospect察stood察in the year 1725察the habitation of Mr。 John Hayes。
One fine morning in the year 1725察Mrs。 Hayes察who had been abroad
in her best hat and riding´hood察 Mr。 Hayes察 who for a wonder had
accompanied her察 and Mrs。 Springatt察 a lodger察 who for a remuneration

had the honour of sharing Mrs。 Hayes's friendship and table此all returned察
smiling and rosy察at about half´past ten o'clock察from a walk which they
had taken to Bayswater。 Many thousands of people were likewise seen
flocking down the Oxford Road察and you would rather have thought察from
the smartness of their appearance and the pleasure depicted in their
countenances察that they were just issuing from a sermon察than quitting the
ceremony which they had been to attend。
The fact is察that they had just been to see a gentleman hangeda cheap
pleasure察 which the Hayes family never denied themselves察 and they
returned home with a good appetite to breakfast察braced by the walk察and
tickled into hunger察as it were察by the spectacle。 I can recollect察when I was
a gyp at Cambridge察that the ;men; used to have breakfast´parties for the
very same purpose察and the exhibition of the morning acted infallibly upon
the stomach察and caused the young students to eat with much voracity。
Well察Mrs。 Catherine察a handsome察well´dressed察plump察rosy woman
of three or four and thirty and when察 my dear察 is a woman handsomer
than at that age殖察came in quite merrily from her walk察and entered the
back´parlour察which looked into a pleasant yard察or garden察whereon the
sun was shining very gaily察and where察at a table covered with a nice white
cloth察laid out with some silver mugs察too察and knives察all with different
crests and patterns察sat an old gentleman reading in an old book。
;Here we are at last察Doctor察─said Mrs。 Hayes察 and here's his speech。;
She produced the little halfpenny tract察 which to this day is sold at the
gallows´foot upon the death of every offender。 ;I've seen a many men
turned off察to be sure察but I never did see one who bore it more like a man
than he did。;
;My dear察─said the gentleman addressed as Doctor察 he was as cool
and as brave as steel察and no more minded hanging than tooth´drawing。;
;It was the drink that ruined him察─said Mrs。 Cat。
;Drink察and bad company。 I warned him察my dearI warned him years
ago此and directly he got into Wild's gang察I knew that he had not a year to
run。 Ah察 why察 my love察 will men continue such dangerous courses察─
continued the Doctor察with a sigh察 and jeopardy their lives for a miserable
watch or a snuff´box察of which Mr。 Wild takes three´fourths of the produce拭

But here comes the breakfast察 and察 egad察 I am as hungry as a lad of
twenty。;
Indeed察at this moment Mrs。 Hayes's servant appeared with a smoking
dish of bacon and greens察and Mr。 Hayes himself ascended from the cellar
of which he kept the key察bearing with him a tolerably large jug of small´
beer。 To this repast the Doctor察Mrs。 Springatt the other lodger察and Mr。
and Mrs。 Hayes察proceeded with great alacrity。 A fifth cover was laid察but
not used察the company remarking that ;Tom had very likely found some
acquaintances at Tyburn察 with whom he might choose to pass the
morning。;
Tom was Master Thomas Billings察 now of the age of sixteen此 slim察
smart察 five feet ten inches in height察 handsome察 sallow in complexion察
black´eyed and black´haired。 Mr。 Billings was apprentice to a tailor察 of
tolerable practice察who was to take him into partnership at the end of his
term。 It was supposed察and with reason察that Tom would not fail to make a
fortune in this business察of which the present head was one Beinkleider察a
German。 Beinkleider was skilful in his trade after the manner of his
nation察 which in breeches and metaphysicsin inexpressibles and
incomprehensiblesmay instruct all Europe察but too fond of his pleasure。
Some promissory notes of his had found their way into Hayes's hands察and
had given him the means not only of providing Master Billings with a
cheap apprenticeship察 and a cheap partnership afterwards察 but would
empower him察in one or two years after the young partner had joined the
firm察to eject the old one altogether。 So that there was every prospect that察
when Mr。 Billings was twenty´one years of age察poor Beinkleider would
have to act察not as his master察but his journeyman。
Tom was a very precocious youth察 was supplied by a doting mother
with plenty of pocket´money察 and spent it with a number of lively
companions of both sexes察at plays察bull´baitings察fairs察jolly parties on the
river察and such´like innocent amusements。 He could throw a main察too察as
well as his elders察had pinked his man察in a row at Madam King's in the
Piazza察and was much respected at the Roundhouse。
Mr。 Hayes was not very fond of this promising young gentleman察
indeed察 he had the baseness to bear malice察 because察 in a quarrel which

occurred about two years previously察he察Hayes察being desirous to chastise
Mr。 Billings察had found himself not only quite incompetent察but actually at
the mercy of the boy察 who struck him over the head with a joint´stool察
felled him to the ground察and swore he would have his life。 The Doctor察
who was then also a lodger at Mr。 Hayes's察 interposed察 and restored the
combatants察 not to friendship察 but to peace。 Hayes never afterwards
attempted to lift his hand to the young man察 but contented himself with
hating him profoundly。 In this sentiment Mr。 Billings participated cordially察
and察quite unlike Mr。 Hayes察who never dared to show his dislike察used on
every occasion when they met察by actions察looks察words察sneers察and curses察
to let his stepfather know the opinion which he had of him。 Why did not
Hayes discard the boy altogether拭 Because察 if he did so察 he was really
afraid of his life察and because he trembled before Mrs。 Hayes察his lady察as
the leaf trembles before the tempest in October。 His breath was not his
own察but hers察his money察too察had been chiefly of her gettingfor though
he was as stingy and mean as mortal man can be察 and so likely to save
much察he had not the genius for GETTING which Mrs。 Hayes possessed。
She kept his books for she had learned to read and write by this time察she
made his bargains察 and she directed the operations of the poor´spirited
little capitalist。 When bills became due察and debtors pressed for time察then
she brought Hayes's own professional merits into play。 The man was as
deaf and cold as a rock察never did poor tradesmen gain a penny from him察
never were the bailiffs delayed one single minute from their prey。 The
Beinkleider business察 for instance察 showed pretty well the gen
