for the hungry cannon at Ramillies and Malplaquet。

Of those two gentlemen who are about to act a very important part in

our history察one only was probably a native of Britainwe say probably察

because the individual in question was himself quite uncertain察 and察 it

must be added察entirely indifferent about his birthplace察but speaking the

English language察 and having been during the course of his life pretty

generally engaged in the British service察he had a tolerably fair claim to

the majestic title of Briton。 His name was Peter Brock察otherwise Corporal

Brock察of Lord Cutts's regiment of dragoons察 he was of age about fifty´

seven even that point has never been ascertained察 in height about five

feet six inches察 in weight察 nearly thirteen stone察 with a chest that the

celebrated Leitch himself might envy察 an arm that was like an opera´

dancer's leg察a stomach so elastic that it would accommodate itself to any

given or stolen quantity of food察 a great aptitude for strong liquors察 a

considerable skill in singing chansons de table of not the most delicate

kind察he was a lover of jokes察of which he made many察and passably bad察

when pleased察simply coarse察boisterous察and jovial察when angry察a perfect

demon此 bullying察 cursing察 storming察 fighting察 as is sometimes the wont

with gentlemen of his cloth and education。

                                      Catherine此A Story

Mr。 Brock was strictly察what the Marquis of Rodil styled himself in a

proclamation to his soldiers after running away察a hijo de la guerraa child

of war。 Not seven cities察but one or two regiments察might contend for the

honour of giving him birth察for his mother察whose name he took察had acted

as camp´follower to a Royalist regiment察 had then obeyed the

Parliamentarians察died in Scotland when Monk was commanding in that

country察 and the first appearance of Mr。 Brock in a public capacity

displayed him as a fifer in the General's own regiment of Coldstreamers察

when they marched from Scotland to London察and from a republic at once

into a monarchy。 Since that period察Brock had been always with the army察

he had had察too察some promotion察for he spake of having a command at the

battle of the Boyne察 though probably as he never mentioned the fact

upon the losing side。 The very year before this narrative commences察he

had been one of Mordaunt's forlorn hope at Schellenberg察 for which

service he was promised a pair of colours察he lost them察however察and was

almost shot but fate did not ordain that his career should close in that way

for drunkenness and insubordination immediately after the battle察 but

having in some measure reinstated himself by a display of much gallantry

at Blenheim察 it was found advisable to send him to England for the

purposes of recruiting察 and remove him altogether from the regiment

where his gallantry only rendered the example of his riot more dangerous。

Mr。 Brock's commander was a slim young gentleman of twenty´six察

about whom there was likewise a history察if one would take the trouble to

inquire。 He was a Bavarian by birth his mother being an English lady察

and enjoyed along with a dozen other brothers the title of count此eleven of

these察of course察were penniless察one or two were priests察one a monk察six

or seven in various military services察 and the elder at home at Schloss

Galgenstein breeding horses察hunting wild boars察swindling tenants察living

in a great house with small means察obliged to be sordid at home all the

year察to be splendid for a month at the capital察as is the way with many

other noblemen。 Our young count察Count Gustavus Adolphus Maximilian

von Galgenstein察 had been in the service of the French as page to a

nobleman察 then of His Majesty's gardes du corps察 then a lieutenant and

captain in the Bavarian service察 and when察 after the battle of Blenheim察

                                      Catherine此A Story

two regiments of Germans came over to the winning side察 Gustavus

Adolphus Maximilian found himself among them察and at the epoch when

this story commences察had enjoyed English pay for a year or more。 It is

unnecessary to say how he exchanged into his present regiment察 how it

appeared that察before her marriage察handsome John Churchill had known

the young gentleman's mother察when they were both penniless hangers´on

at Charles the Second's courtit is察we say察quite useless to repeat all the

scandal of which we are perfectly masters察 and to trace step by step the

events of his history。 Here察however察was Gustavus Adolphus察in a small

inn察in a small village of Warwickshire察on an autumn evening in the year

1705察and at the very moment when this history begins察he and Mr。 Brock察

his corporal and friend察were seated at a round table before the kitchen´fire

while a small groom of the establishment was leading up and down on the

village green察 before the inn door察 two black察 glossy察 long´tailed察 barrel´

bellied察thick´flanked察arch´necked察Roman´nosed Flanders horses察which

were the property of the two gentlemen now taking their ease at the

;Bugle Inn。; The two gentlemen were seated at their ease at the inn table察

drinking mountain´wine察and if the reader fancies from the sketch which

we have given of their lives察or from his own blindness and belief in the

perfectibility of human nature察that the sun of that autumn evening shone

upon any two men in county or city察 at desk or harvest察 at Court or at

Newgate察drunk or sober察who were greater rascals than Count Gustavus

Galgenstein and Corporal Peter Brock察he is egregiously mistaken察and his

knowledge of human nature is not worth a fig。 If they had not been two

prominent scoundrels察what earthly business should we have in detailing

their histories拭What would the public care for them拭Who would meddle

with dull virtue察 humdrum sentiment察 or stupid innocence察 when vice察

agreeable vice察 is the only thing which the readers of romances care to

hear拭

The little horse´boy察who was leading the two black Flanders horses up

and down the green察might have put them in the stable for any good that

the horses got by the gentle exercise which they were now taking in the

cool evening air察as their owners had not ridden very far or very hard察and

there was not a hair turned of their sleek shining coats察 but the lad had

been especially ordered so to walk the horses about until he received

further commands from the gentlemen reposing in the ;Bugle; kitchen察

and the idlers of the village seemed so pleased with the beasts察and their

smart saddles and shining bridles察that it would have been a pity to deprive

them of the pleasure of contemplating such an innocent spectacle。 Over

the Count's horse was thrown a fine red cloth察 richly embroidered in

yellow worsted察 a very large count's coronet and a cipher at the four

corners of the covering察and under this might be seen a pair of gorgeous

silver stirrups察and above it察a couple of silver´mounted pistols reposing in

bearskin holsters察 the bit was silver too察 and the horse's head was

decorated with many smart ribbons。 Of the Corporal's steed察suffice it to

say察 that the ornaments were in brass察 as bright察 though not perhaps so

valuable察 as those which decorated the Captain's animal。 The boys察 who

had been at play on the green察first paused and entered into conversation

with the horse´boy察 then the village matrons followed察 and afterwards察

sauntering by ones and twos察came the village maidens察who love soldiers

as flies love treacle察presently the males began to arrive察and lo the parson

of the parish察 taking his evening walk with Mrs。 Dobbs察 and the four

children his offspring察at length joined himself to his flock。
